    The double-stranded Ice Yarns Suede Chenille I've started a crocheted S18 scarf with is a LOT less plush than the Bernat Blanket I'm used to with chenille yarns. It reminds me a bit of "kitchen cotton" yarn, actually, even though it's 100% microfiber. Currently in the midst of the initial rusty orange stripe; going better now that I no longer am working into the foundation chain.

    I found some DK weight chenille yarn in the right colors for a S18 scarf at Ice Yarns (Chenille Baby Light for the red & purple, and Suede Chenille for the rusty orange), and plan to use it double-stranded for a crocheted S18 scarf (using Sandra Petit's pattern for a "short" 6 ft. scarf). It's a lot thinner than the superbulky Bernat Blanket I've used for afghans in the past; I hope it works. (The 2 Ice Yarns are both 100% microfiber, so not the 100% acrylic your Lion Brand Suede was.)

    I am also having trouble finding the correct colors. I found a local yarn shop in Tucson that custom dyes chenille yarn. I have a PMS color chart and found the colors that match very well. Paint color chips also work from your local hardware store or paint shop. Thanks for the vid!

    In an interview with Tom Baker, he mentioned that often people would step on the scarf, either by accident or as a joke, and it would get stretched... this is very likely the reason the grey patch was removed and the whole scarf shortened.

    I never would have known that they cut out grey parts and then attached it on backwards if not for this video.

    this is super helpful thank you! is there any way to do stockinette with chenille yarn? when I do it, the columns of v stitches space out really unevenly and it just looks awful. that might be because I'm new to to knitting tho

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 3 роки тому

      Yes! You can knit chenille in stockinette, but (like garter stitch) it will require extra practice and extra patience to eliminate worming entirely. If you are new to knitting, I would recommend getting a really neat, even gauge in a "normal" yarn first and once you're really confident there start practicing with chenille.

    What do you do for weaving in the single row passes?

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 4 роки тому

      Just the standard "follow the row" weaving, there's unfortunately no trick available as the colors need to blend so there's only one row available for darning per color.

    Bernat Baby Blanket Tiny would be the right yarn weight, but they don't appear to have any of the right colors (Red Barn and Sunflower would be the closest, but don't appear to be very close). The original superbulky Bernat Baby Blanket has since been joined by Bernat Blanket in all kinds of colorways, though, so perhaps a Bernat Blanket Thin with more "grown-up" colors (including some suitable for a S18 Doctor Who scarf) might be a possibility in the future.

    • @alexmichaels6068
      @alexmichaels6068 6 років тому

      This is the biggest issue, unfortunately. Bernat Baby Blanket Tiny looks great, Premier Parfait is also good (if slightly too bulky) but no colors even come close. I've contacted several companies in the past and they never have an interest in adding colors to their ranges. It's very frustrating.

    Great videos! Since Sirdar chenille isn't really available, what alternative chenille yarn would you suggest? doctorwhoscarf.com recommends Casco Bay Cotton Chenille, but it's a bit pricey. On yarn.com there is Valley Yarns Rayon Chenille, and the colors Spice, Burgundy, and Eggplant looked like they would do well, but I can't tell if it's similar enough to work.

    • @alexmichaels4947
      @alexmichaels4947 7 років тому

      I haven't seen the Valley Yarn chenille, but honestly I'd say trawl eBay for some Lion Brand Suede. It's discontinued but not impossible to come by. The colors are probably better than Casco Bay and sometimes you can get a deal on eBay.

    So, does anything else look good on chenille besides garter? I was trying different things but everything seems to look wacky at the end. I was hoping some lace or cables, but nope... lol. I notice you don't slip the first stitch as often is done for scarves. I'd assume to keep it tight on the edges?

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 7 років тому

      I slip the final stitch, and yes, it keeps the edges nice and tight. Chenille is good for ribbing, it looks nice as afghans and sweaters :)

    Thankyou very much! I found your videos very helpful but i was wondering how long it took you to knot the whole thing and how long it was? Im planning to start this as a project this winter and i was aiming for the 15ft mark as i am quite short and a screen-accurate 26ft long one would completely bury me! Also, have you heard or seen a LOVARZI replica of this scarf if so what do you think of it? Sorry for all the questions and again, thankyou!💛💛

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 7 років тому

      This particular project was slowed down by a lack of the purple yarn - it took about 2 years to find enough purple to complete it. But generally it takes between 6-12 weeks to knit one from start to finish. It may take you longer your first time, especially if you're not used to chenille. The final screen accurate scarf came out to be 1' wide by 18' long, and it will stretch quite a bit over time I would imagine. Baker's probably got to around 23'/24' by Logopolis, judging by his height, but was definitely around 18' on Brighton Beach in Leisure Hive. The Lovarzi scarf is excellent for a ready-made product - great colors, soft, warm, and even chenille! It does lack the handmade look (which makes sense, as it's not handmade) and the scarf is a bit shiny and not bulky enough, but for an off-the-rack product it's wonderful! Best of luck with your project!

    Been working on my own DW scarf but it keeps curling on me, started over three times now. Tried putting an stitched edge on it but it still curls. Got any suggestions? Your video shows a nice clean edge. BTW I'm using worsted weight warn #4

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 9 років тому

      NickMueh How odd. Are you knitting it in garter stitch or stockinette? Because stockinette will always and forever curl no matter how many times you iron it, but garter stitch should sit pretty flat by default.

    • @NickMueh
      @NickMueh 9 років тому

      Alex Murphy The pattern I found at doctorwhoscarf.com/ called for stockinette. So if I want the nice clean edge like in you're video I should use garter stitch.

    Thanks for the reply. I shall give that a try. Is it necessary to stretch the scarf while wet? I've seen people pinning it into place and stretching it out a little. Also does it matter if I use acrylic yarn? Sorry if I'm asking really stupid questions, I'm very much an amateur when it comes to knitting! Thanks for your advice.

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 9 років тому

      James Nicholls None of these questions are stupid. :) Acrylic yarn you want to steam block or use REALLY hot water, and you're pretty safe in assuming the colors won't bleed. Acrylic doesn't have memory since it's essentially plastic so it needs to be warped into place or it will revert back to its old shape. Pin the scarf into the shape you want it to stay at while it dries (unless you steam block, in which case it won't be wet and won't need pinning), because once it's dry it should retain it's shape pretty well.

  • @jimmyjim2
    @jimmyjim2 9 років тому

    Thanks for sharing this. Do you ever block your scarfs? I've made a few but never blocked any as I'm terrified of screwing it up somehow and I'm not really sure of the best way to do it.

    • @alex_michaels
      @alex_michaels 9 років тому

      James Nicholls I always block my scarves. On occasion you may come across a yarn that will bleed color in hot or warm water (Cascade 220 9572 "Cabernet" is the only one that does that I've ever used) but if you block in cool water you should be fine. Blocking is magic, I highly recommend it. Basically all you're going to do is soak the scarf in water, gently squeeze it dry (do not wring or it will felt), and then lay it flat to dry. It'll relax the stitches into place and greatly improve the overall look and feel of the garment.
