In this Dirt Locker episode, we showcase a project we did in Shadow Hills, CA. The homeowners JC and Jen have a beautiful backyard with a large hillside. After trying other hillside gardening and planting products Jen found the Dirt Locker hillside terracing system in an online gardening group.
JC and Jen were very impressed with all the Dirt Locker videos that showed how to install the product and many before and after videos showing how the hillside looked after the Dirt Locker system was installed and the plants had grown in.
After doing a cost comparison with other options such as retaining walls JC and Jen found that the Dirt Locker system was a much cheaper solution that did not require expensive engineering and time-consuming city permits and approvals.
JC really liked the fact that the Dirt Locker system is DIY friendly, and it was something that he could do himself. JC did bring in a professional landscaping company to help him do the installation because of the size of the project but he was able to be involved in every aspect of the installation. The landscaping company that JC used was Kathy’s Landscaping in Santa Clarita.
JC was impressed with how small of a foot print the Dirt Lockers took up when they arrived at his house. He was reminded of how Ikea Furniture ships in a flat pack.
JC was impressed by how well his Dirt Locker system did during the heavy rains that hit Southern California earlier in the year. (2024) and how all the water was retained in the Dirt Locker cells. JC experienced zero erosion or hillside damage during the heavy rains.
JC and Jen spend a lot time in their backyard with friends and family they like that fact that the Dirt Locker system allows them to walk up and down their hill and give them total access to all of their plants especially the fruit trees.
After the system was installed with the black Dirt Lockers and before the plants started growing some of JC and Jen’ s neighbors questioned their decision however after the plants grow in and the Dirt Lockers were hidden the neighbors were thoroughly impressed.
The new garden was thriving so well that two beehives moved in to access and help pollinate all of the flowers.

    Mark, Does each Dirt Locker need a J hook? 600 Dirt Lockers = 600 J hooks?

    • @dirtlocker
      @dirtlocker 21 день тому

      Great question! The answer depends on your slope angle. Steep slopes over 35° require a separate row application, (see videos) where every Dirt Locker would in fact need a J hook. If you are able to keep your Dirt Lockers connected because you are are under 36°, then you would place a J hook on every Dirt Locker on every other row. Head to our installation tab for more details. dirtlocker.com/pages/installation-new

    I have 7 acres with the back 1.5 acres consisting of a 150 foot deep steep ravine with about 300' x 60' of flat land on the top of the other side of the ravine that is, for all practical purposes, only accessible through someone else's property. The soil is a lose sandy silt loam (the whole area is former glacial lake bed) that does not take well to digging steps. Having just attempted another "crossing" this evening and giving up halfway up the other side, I've decided I'm done with the nonsense. My kids are part mountain goat and can get over to the other side by going down and up the ravine, but my center of gravity ain't what it used to be! Before I lose the property on the other side of the ravine to an adverse possession claim, I need to figure something out and this may just be the answer I've been looking for! Good stuff!
