This Contested Land—Book Trailer
"This land is your land." When it comes to national monuments, the sentiment could hardly be more fraught. Bears Ears, Utah and Basin and Range, Nevada are among the thirteen natural sites McKenzie Long visits in her book THIS CONTESTED LAND: the storied past and uncertain future of America's national monuments, an eye-opening exploration of the stories these national monuments tell, the passions they stir, and the controversies that surround them.

Thunderbolt Ridge - The Unofficial Sequel to Free Solo
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
Thunderbolt Ridge is the inspiring story of one man's journey to battle adversity and conquer the impossible. Actually, it's just proof of the stupidity that results when a pandemic shuts down Yosemite National Park, and the search and rescue team is left with way too much free time. Stay safe out there! And always tip your rescuers!!!
Pamir Pilgrimage - Frozen ice, frozen roads, and first ascents in Central Asia
Переглядів 80 тис.3 роки тому
Rising over 15,000 ft, the Pamir Highway is the second-highest highway in the world. In January 2020, three geniuses set out to drive it in a fragile Russian van in the dead of winter. Their goal was to discover unclimbed ice somewhere along the 2,900 miles of winding frozen road. Did they succeed? Perhaps. But one thing is for sure, the trip didn't go as planned. Directed by Jack Cramer Footag...
Patagonia Weather Forecasting for Climbers - Tips to get your wind forecasts right
Переглядів 1,3 тис.5 років тому
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of climbing in southern Patagonia is dealing with the ferocious wind, or as it's sometimes called "The Broom of God." With some effort and experience, however, it is possible to accurately predict periods of low wind and decent weather. The weather forecasting information laid out here is based of advice offered by Rolando Garibotti in the guidebook Patagonia V...
Selflessness on Cerro Torre - Success, injury, and salvation on "an impossible mountain"
Переглядів 65 тис.5 років тому
After the making first ascent of Fitz Roy in 1952, Lionel Terray gazed west and declared the nearby Cerro Torre "an impossible mountain." Although modern equipment and accurate forecasts have negated that initial description, the mountain still presents an immense challenge to experienced climbers. During a brief period of stable weather in February 2019, several parties succeeded and reached i...

1998 - viene inaugurata: COMISION DE AUXILIO EL CHALTEN "FABIO STEDILE” in Patagonia per iniziativa della SAT è diventata realtà la stazione di soccorso di El Chalten. Fabio was my cousin. It is after his death on Cerro Torre that the mountain group of the Italian Trentino Region built the emergency service. He died on Cerro Torre during the descent in 1994. His companion never gave any explanation as to what happened. You might want to check him out on internet. Before then it was just few houses in the totally remote el chalten. I went there in 2019 in a beautiful day I will always remember

Hell YES, thank you so much for sharing this. I did some rock climbing as a younger man, but my good friends added mountaineering to things and from them I’ve developed a great love and admiration for the discipline. It’s all easy to admire: Whymper’s party on the Matterhorn, the drama of the Eiger, Mallory disappearing up the north ridge of Everest, the adventure of the national expeditions to the big mountains and the bravery of Messner taking a novel route up Everest, without O2 and alone. But boy have some of the stories on Everest and even K2 really grossed me out and made me wonder just who the hell are the people who want that summit on their CV? How do you smile and pose in a photo when you just stepped-over a dying man in your path? I know things aren’t so simple at great heights, but this idea that “in the death zone, there’s nothing you can do,” along with expense on a “trip of a lifetime” has engendered a certain mercenary attitude. When a hundred are in line from the south summit, it’s easy to see it all as someone else’s problem and where’s that person’s Sherpa anyway and they are probably weak climbers anyhow. That entire calculus is exploded by the rescue of Lincoln Hall, for example - a man who’d earlier been part of the successful Australian expedition up the north face, got left at the summit overnight, declared dead, and later rescued in large part due to an American team who had to abandon their own ascent to do so. So to hell with “there’s no use.” Ugh, I know things are complicated and it’s not for me to judge, but I can say thank-you for showing a better side of mountaineering that I like to think is widespread and alive-and-well on other peaks and ranges. This super warmed my heart and my hat is off to you and everyone on Cerro Torre that day.
