How To Build a Cedar Planter Box For BEGINNERS (with cut list)
If you are anything like we are, you’re a frugal shopper that would rather do a DIY project on the cheap than spend your hard-earned money on something someone else made.
Well, here is a cool DIY cedar planter that was done for less than $5 per box
Here’s how we can do a project that inexpensive. First, the cedar pickets were given to us from a friend that builds fences and he gave us the rustic junkie stuff that he couldn’t use….score!!
Maybe you don’t have a friend that builds fences and you want to know how to score some free wood for this build. Facebook market place has people giving away old fence pickets all the time, or maybe while your driving around your neighborhood someone is replacing their fence and put the old stuff out for the trash company to pick up. I might not be a dumpster diver, but I have been known to help myself to someone’s discarded lumber.
Secondly, the plastic planter box was picked up from our local Tractor Supply for 50% off. While these boxes are seasonal here is a link to order the same size on Amazon, but not the same price as TSC. amzn.to/3Pya3cH
Shop around on Amazon for these. Many times you an find a great deal if your willing to try a different color.

Custom Shiplap Venthood Build
Переглядів 4162 роки тому
Finally got the venthood checked off the honey-do list. 3/4 inch cabinet grade plywood, all of which was from scraps by the way, for the framework. 7.25 inch shiplap from the box store that has been on the shelf for the past year just waiting to be cut up and used for something cool. 1x6 poplar used for the trim at the bottom and 1x4 poplar used to trim out the top. The venthood insert was purc...
Backyard Archery Backstop
Переглядів 5952 роки тому
We have recently gotten our girls their own compound bows and while practice makes perfect, the idea of continuing to lose arrows as they improve isn't a great option. We came up with solution that will stop a fast-moving arrow in its tracks without damaging the arrow and one that has some curb appeal as well. We started with some left-over cedar beams that we had laying around the woodshop and...
How to build a Charcuterie serving tray
Переглядів 5163 роки тому
This project was so much fun. Not only did we get to donate an item for a great charity, but I also got to spend a few hours in the woodshop with my oldest daughter. While I did the best we could on going through the step by step process of building a hardwood charcuterie tray there were several areas that you can use your imagination and come up with something of your own creation. Size, mater...
Honest Tool Review On The Laguna SuperMax 19/38
Переглядів 15 тис.3 роки тому
Most in woodworking know that sanding is a chore that nobody likes to do, but it’s necessary to have a great looking finished piece. We had the hope to add a drum sander to our arsenal with the intent to speed up production and still have a great end result. We added the Laguna SuperMax 19/38 and wanted to do an honest review of whether it was a added value to the woodshop or just another gadge...
Farmhouse inspired, console table top
Переглядів 4903 роки тому
As best as we could this is a step by step video showing how we take dimensional lumber purchased from the big box stores and mill it down to construct a perfectly smooth flat console table top. From the Powermatic Jointer to the Sawstop table saw and off to the Jet 20 inch planer. As you can see we have no brand loyalty, we just go with what works best and what our budget allows. I would have ...
Using Cricut Maker to create decorative front porch wood signs
Переглядів 1043 роки тому
My wife designed some signs on her Cricut Maker and wanted to spend the day and have a “date” to create her signs. This gave me a great opportunity to teach her how to use some of the tools we have in the woodshop. Getting to use the Miter Saw and Router Table was a first for her and she did an amazing job picking up the function and techniques of each. She has sanded before but has not used th...
Getting the kids involved in woodworking!!

Teaching my 11 year old daughter some of the finer points of woodworking by starting her out on the bench top lathe. Pen making is a great way to start kids and youth in woodworking. By them being able to see a finished functional piece in such a short time period builds an interest and pride in a beautiful completed project.

I've had this unit for a few years and it is beyond frustrating. First, changing the paper is a challenge because the retention clip in the right side is supposed to take up tension and it's hit or miss. I've ruined many sheets of paper along the way. Second, the feed belt has never tracked properly despite repeated attempts to adjust it. I'm not the only person to have these issues. I've watched other UA-cam videos by people with the same issues and frustrations, but have yet to achieve satisfactory results.

Great video, a few suggestions for people who may be new to these. 1, get the infeed/out feed tables. They really help with longer boards to avoid snipe. 2, get a bent nose set of pliers to help pull the paper tight. 3, stop after the first few boards with new paper and retighten the roll.

What size wood planks are you using for the frame? 2x4 dimensional lumber? Thanks!

The frame was made from milling 2x4s and the top was made from 2x6s while the bottom slats were 1x4s

thanks for sharing...could you please expand on quality of finish it produces? is snipe an issue that can be adjusted for? Thanks again and consider yourself subscribed!

Great questions!! Snipe isn’t an issue that I have had at all. As far as the finish it leaves depends on the grit sandpaper being used. I tend to do 120 and use the drum sander for a flat finish and then use the orbital.

I just got my 1938 combo unboxed the other day. Got it all set up myself and realize I have to put in a 110v wiring. Did yours come unwired also with no plug installed? No where in the instructions am I seeing it explain I need to put in my own cord. (Unless I need thick glasses) I'd think for $3200+ itd come with at least a pigtail.

Thanks for confirming. I found using a spare heavy computer power cord did the trick. Clips in with quick release clips in the connectors fast. I still wrote Laguna tools a nasty gram about it. We'll see what they do if anything to 'make it right'

It works well in conjunction with the planer. I use it for small depth removal or to clean up the snipe from the planer. Can’t compete with the planer when milling rough stock to dimension.

I am looking at purchasing a drum sander to sand the edge of my rail and stile doors on the ¾” end. Has anyone used their sander for that purpose? If yes, how were the results? Will the SuperMax sand 90 degree so you can get tight joints? Thanks in advance for the help.

    • @MetcalfeDesignCoLLC
      @MetcalfeDesignCoLLC 2 роки тому

I have used it a few times on doors I've built to clean up the seams and it does a great job. I run the joints through and then use a random orbital to finish them and they turn out great!

You can clean the sandpaper with Simple Green in a jug. Soak the strips over night and rinse them. May have to scrub a bit with a nylon brush. Learned this from sanding a bunch of Heart Pine, ONE piece at a time.

Can you measure the overall length of the driven roller for the 19/38? I’m curious if it would be a direct replacement for my Jet sander who had discontinued that roller.

Aside from my metal, and wood lathes, this drum sander is definitely one tool that changed the game for me. A planer is awesome and I use it for rough dimensions, but I have belts up to 220 grit, and it leaves a perfect flat surface. All in a fraction of the time vs with the random orbital sander. This was a great review, and spot on to what I have noted.

If your shop had a fair amount of floating dust from sanding. How long do you think it would take to clear the dust and make the air breathable with the fan on? Thinking about building a few of these for my shop.

    • @MetcalfeDesignCoLLC
      @MetcalfeDesignCoLLC 5 років тому

There unfortunately is always dust in my shop. While I’m working on one thing I’ll have my CNC router running in the back ground creating its own dust. My plan is to improve my dust collector first and my size shop which is about 1400 sq ft. Probably needs at least three of these types of fans to keep the air quality good
