Training Philosophy
Training time should be the most fun time of the dog’s life. We will ask the dog for work but the rewards will make the work seem easy. There may be some minor stress as we progress and challenge the dog’s problem solving ability but the stress will be minor and will give way to even greater reward.
Protection training: We will introduce the protection sports as a fun game, paying close attention to the energy and mindset of the dog. The game will become more and more challenging as we introduce the individual pieces of protection skills but we will always maintain the fun factor. The play of this game is designed to be it’s own reward. The rules of this game insure that it is not rehearsed in a way that creates an aggressive or dangerously fearful dog. Our goal is that a dog can walk off the protection field and be a stable, safe companion with our children and society at large. We will accept nothing less.

Ultimate Guide to Implied Stay for Dogs
In this video, learn how to teach your dog the implied stay concept without having to say a "stay" command every time. This technique will help your dog understand that behaviors continue until you release them, making training easier and more effective! This concept is easy to see in stationary behaviors like sit, down, place, stand, but the concept is equally valid in moving behaviors like heel and come. Think of this like telling a dog to keep heeling or keep coming to you even if you move away. Understanding how to build a continuation marker and how and when to use it and phase it out are the important concepts.
In this video topics discussed are related to session 2 of our basic obedience courses. Even if you are well past basic session 2 it is worthwhile to check back on these topics from time to time to keep up your timing and techniques.

What is a "Protection Dog?"
Переглядів 3578 місяців тому
A protection dog is not a robot it is a thinking feeling companion that has been trained to distinguish between threats and normal behavior and trained to listen and act under your leadership. We do not call them "guard dogs." They are not some menacing beast behind a fenced junkyard locked away from the public. They are our dutiful and trustworthy confidants. Want to train or purchase a dog fo...

What does good #Bitework look like? Look no further. Timber is learning close quarters defense of his handler Maria at our Saturday group bite work class. This work requires all the drive and obedience work be in place and a strong relationship of trust with the owner. Many people think that they need to have their dog's obedience dialed in to start doing protection work. This could not be furt...

Starting your puppy, Lures to Basic Behaviors
I don't own a Shiba Inu, I've never owned a Shiba Inu, I don't own a dog personally, and I have no need for dog training videos, yet this ended up in my recommendations. And I couldn't be happier about it. What a good boy this little guy is
My problem is small kibble, trying to train heel, he gets aggressive and I start dropping the kibble and he gets even more bite-y..now the bitey has spread all the time, I’m worried he’s going to do this forever, he’s about 14 weeks old..
Two things can help. Try a food size that is large enough you can hold it with your thumb and he can still see it. About the size of a nickle tends to be the smallest I use. Flat is better than spheres. Then try a game we call "it's your choice" hold the food so he can see it. Star with fingers pointed down. If his nose pushes to your palm pay that. If he bites at your hand say no. Then pause. Next show him the food with your hand open. If he strikes at it close your hand and say no. If he looks at it, say yes and pay. The result: nose pushes get paid when your hand is vertical fingers down. Looks at the food get paid in all other cases. Let me know how this goes.
Little boy did well, these pups are way stronger than this appears..
What bite objects are you using? Is it a burlap sack piece?
This is a piece of leather. Burlap is a good starting point but used too long it teaches the dog to rely too heavily on their teeth rather than bite pressure. Mixing up the biting surface between leather, burlap, French linen (nylacot) jute, polar fleece, fire hose, cotton shirt over bite wedge etc. Get creative. Variety helps avoid material bias.
How old in this video
A couple years.
Lol I believe he was referring to the dog. If so, I have the same question
This was great! I have a 9 week old GSD and she loves to play bite hands. Is it okay to let it be or should I discourage it
No. Do not allow ANY hand biting. Primarily non-reinforce. That is, flatly say "no" and remove your hands. Turn off the fun. When she is not biting hands play with toys with her. Get her focused on the toys and make play fun by letting her win. If she bites your hand while playing, say no. Stop the game. If she figures out biting your hand is an off-switch for the fun she will quit, fast. Puppies will bite you for a couple reasons: 1 dominance games, don't play stop. Frustration, let them win easier, if they are over-tired, stop playing give them a quiet rest. Very few puppies need correction to stop biting but some will.
Audax K9 Academy thank you so much! Will do that

im going to be picking up a new gsd in the next couple weeks and will be doing bite work with it. when the puppy starts losing its puppy teeth do you stop doing bite work? and if so generally what time frame are you looking at? thanks!
Yes stop bite/tug play during teething. Usually in the 4 to six month range. Watch for all the gaps to be full with his new teeth and start back up.
What a fabulous job! That's my 'grand-puppy', we are so excited to work with him (and you when needed!). He is such a fantastic addition to our family. Thank you!
We are just getting started!
