Hidden Gems of San Lorenzo Market, Paraguay: TROPICAL RESTAURANT & CENTRO DEL ARTESANO Art/Gift Shop
00:00 PART 1: TROPICAL RESTAURANT (Mercado San Lorenzo, PY)
07:30 PART 2: CENTRO DEL ARTESANO (Mercado San Lorenzo, PY)
Hello everyone, welcome back! Join me as I take you to Tropical, a nicer chill family eatery with a bakery, ice cream and drinks - very popular in Paraguay. Then we head to Centro del Artesano, a beautiful locally owned shop where stunning works of art and thermoses (termos) are sold - one of the best places to buy in the country for fair prices. These are both hidden gems in the San Lorenzo market, which isn't much explored by too many expats. San Lorenzo is a bustling city with a great market, but not overwhelming like Asunción can be, especially in Mercado 4.

    I’d be nervous taking my dog to a new place and going on walks without a can of bear spray as protection for my dog. Where I live when I got a new dog she got attacked multiple times by loose dogs. After hundreds of dollars in vet bills for stitches, I finally got a can of bear spray, and over the years I’ve been able to prevent several dog attacks with the bear spray. But, it doesn’t look like you’re in an area with many loose dogs. Your dog looks like a dog I had many years ago. After he died, it was very hard on me, and I vowed to never get another dog. But, one day a lost scared puppy ran up to me in the street - and well - she’s been my dog for 13 years now 🙂.

      I love the adoption story off the street. I bet your dog is very happy now =) And yeah, no bears around here, or other street animals. Very peaceful. If I do start taking him in the streets at all I'll have to be very cautious, but I think he's going to end up with a yard here shortly if all goes well!

    Great video. Got questions about your move or anyone else’s move. What will you do for work and income in Paraguay from the states? Are you going to work for someone or work on your own? A lot of people don’t think of this and would be interesting to get your view. Also regarding taxes and the US, do you still have to pay taxes in the US (global tax) The US citizens pay global tax, any thoughts on what to do or what you plan to do? Also do you recommend an English speaking immigration lawyer to get residency? Someone experienced and cheap? There are a lot of cowboys in Paraguay that like to rip of gringos. Thanks.

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay

      Thanks for writing in! So a few answers, right now I'm in the process of setting up my own businesses along with growing this UA-cam channel. I may have to work virtually for a company again, but not for awhile as I am focusing on my own entrepreneurial endeavors - including helping foreigners obtain residency for a fair price. I do have 4 years experience working virtually though, and I believe it's something everyone should try to attain at some point (the skills to be able to work virtually). And regarding taxes, yes I still owe American taxes at the end of the year. Essentially, all expats have to report and pay in just as if we were working back in the states (the one exception is if you denounce American citizenship- which I don't advise anyone to do). And for lawyers, you can get English speaking, sure, but you can also have your own translator/interpreter, which is actually where I come in, and you can have an even easier process with less money and/or the same amount you'd pay an English-speaking lawyer. For now I advise those seeking (until I'm set up) to work w/ Nomad Elite - he has a good track record. Lastly, there are scammers everywhere in the world, you just got to know where to go to not get gringo-priced, and also, once starting out in a new country, try to have a local assist you when you're shopping or in the market before you try to go yourself - just some advice of mine until you get comfortable.

    I had read that eating a clove of garlic a day when you move to a new country will help calm down any new bacteria you may get exposed to, and then you can slowly start reducing the garlic over a few weeks, and by then the gut can handle the new “bacteria family” much better. I never tested that theory though 🙂

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay

      Hey my friend, so I'm staying in Parque Pinar in Ñemby. Now, I'm going to be pretty honest - I'm not really a fan of this location. I like "Parques" or Condo Communities, but this one is just too far from everywhere I kind of want and need to be. If you can find one in Villa Elisa or Lambaré closer to Asunción, I think that you'd be better off. Ñemby has great deals, but it's very far from much of everything, even more decent restaurants. If you're liking to stay closer to Asunción I'd look at places near or on Ruta 2, b/c there are more restaurants and malls and things to do closer to Ruta 2 (Asunción > Fernando de la Mora > San Lorenzo). Just my opinion. Feel free to reach out for a consultation if needed! mybestlifeparaguay@gmail.com

      Hey my friend, that's actually a great question. Now that I think of it, they still need to install those in each room. • @MyBestLifeParaguay
      @MyBestLifeParaguay 16 днів тому

      Hey there friend, I wouldn't say Asuncion has true "suburbs" similar to North America. But there are quieter cities, and neighborhoods within these cities. I would say Villa Elisa is one of these. I would say if you're not retired, try your best to stay close to Asuncion and anywhere on Ruta 2. Asuncion > Fernando > San Lorenzo > even to Capiatá and beyond. Then again I am a little bit bias, because I know those areas better, but they are also developing faster. BUT If you want to be close to Asuncion, Lambare and Villa Elisa have some excellent deals on Condos, Penthouses, and Houses I've seen, quite a bit cheaper than the expat circles inside Asucnion center.

      Hey Joe, nice to meet you! Very much appreciate your support for my channel and your uplifting words. And I agree with the Spanish subtitles - I believe people should be able to bring those up on my videos, but I would probably have to go in and see if they're accurate. Sometimes they're not the best. If I include them from scratch myself, it takes a very long time, but I'm going to try and figure out a solution for that going forward. And yes, meeting my family was the catalyst for me traveling and now relocating permanently as well. It's an ongoing journey for sure. You have quite the story yourself it seems as well! I love to hear of successful marriages. Far too many broken families in the States and other western nations. And even more so because it sounds like you found your Paraguayan sweetheart. Congratulations on retiring as well! That's a big accomplishment, and I'm glad you're living your best life and traveling to Paraguay more frequently. And yes, I consider myself Capiateño, all our family roots begin there and it's where most of my family still lives. I absolutely love Itaugua, it's a lovely artisan and chill town right on the lake. I've only just passed through Ypacaraí though on the way to Caacupé I believe but I'm sure it's very nice as well.

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay
      @MyBestLifeParaguay 3 місяці тому

      Also love to hear this as well, that your kids are proud to be Paraguayan. I am glad that it sounds like you're both very supportive parents in allowing your kids to embrace their hispanic/latino identity. I have friends from New York who are now in their 30s whose parents sadly didn't pass on all hispanic traditions and even the Spanish language, b/c of fear that they'd receive discriminatory treatment and face some of the same racism that they faced growing up. But it's very good that your kids embrace their heritage. Also, you mentioned you consider yourself to be Paraguayan, even if you don't have ancestral ties to the country. And I can say you are very much Paraguayan and I'm sure Paraguayans accept you as as their own, especially raising the new generation of Paraguayans right behind you. I wish you all the luck in your travels and your adventures, and thank you again for tuning in to my channel. I'm just getting started here. :)

But my house is the spot where they all head to the country and I don’t have to tell you about the party’s they have. It incredible The Asado done PY style and all traditional PY food. I love it all. Yeah Ryan I retired and I was just a plain old maintenance man in a Elementary school for a long time. A great job and it’s one of those jobs where you can retire with a nice pension after 55 and as long as you have a certain amount of years in. I’ll be checking in whenever I can but now when the weather is nice I try to be outside doing work around the house. I found your channel about two weeks ago take care my friend

      @@joececere4918 That's wonderful, Joe! I'm glad that you're surrounded by a large Paraguayan community. I knew there were quite a few Paraguayans in NY and New Jersey, but I didn't know where specifically. So appreciate that explanation. Very interesting. And I'm glad you got to retire and receive your pension at 55 yrs old! That's amazing. I also worked for the school district in my city in Administration and if I would have stayed, I'd be in the same boat, but it was better for me at the time to be contracted with the state I live in, but I know many district employees love being able to retire at 55 yrs old. That's wonderful. And no problem! No need to be online too much, haha. I'll be doing a lot more videos after July 1. But I'm sure I'll have a few in-between then. Take care as well, and my greetings to the Paraguayan community up there in NY! I'm sure it's a wonderful time hanging with them.

    Man I think you’re making the best decision to come to Paraguay. I moved here back in 2020. The first 3 years were kinda difficult. But now, I’m so happy here. I’m living a dream life now. Still struggling a little with the language barrier but my stress level is almost nonexistent. The Creator will help. Believe in yourself. Focus on your goals and just look at it as another positive adventure in life. You’ll have alotta good stories to tell when you’re older. And as far as the women here, you won’t have any problems. Just be patient, respectful and be yourself. Keep making the videos, people are gonna want to see your progress

      You made an excellent choice, my friend! I'm so happy to hear that your stress-level is almost non-existent and you found your TRUE happiness in Paraguay. That's how I've felt every time I've been there as well over the years, and it shoots right back up once I had to come back to the USA. But this time, I don't plan on coming back. And absolutely, I'm going to be living with a closer connection to the Creator. I've had years of darkness but Paraguay is my place of birth and has always been my light. Also, definitely true about Paraguayan women... endless amount of beautiful sweethearts. I have quite a bit of experience dating over the last 12 years, but this time it will be a phenomenally better experience now that I don't have to get on a plane and leave back to the USA any longer. It will be a night and day difference. And I'll definitely be making more videos here... I'm just getting started here. Much appreciate you commenting in and tuning into the channel!

    As you were born in Paraguay. Did you get your citizenship with your residency or you have to take the same route as everyone, temporary residency 2 years then permanent residency for 10 years and then after 3 years citizenship into permanent ? thank you for sharing 💛

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay
      @MyBestLifeParaguay 3 місяці тому

      I did not have to do temporary, no. I was able to get my cédula and permanent residency because of my family ties, and having a Paraguayan birth certificate myself. I do not have full citizenship quite yet, I don't believe - I am going to check on the timeline of that for myself once I return. But, at least for my goals, I'm not too worried as I won't need a Paraguayan Passport immediately. Also, with my Paraguayan ID (cédula), I can travel via car to surrounding countries because of MercoSur, which I will be doing a little bit of once I am there.

    Thank you for sharing. I forgot your name? And yes Adam ( A Dirt cheep life in Paraguay) is really honest and real so its nice to follow him and ask questions. Its nice to follow your honest and humble journey. Paraguay seems very popular now and people are trying to make money from this residency and real estate. What cities/pueblos you visited that you like ? What foods you like there ? 💛

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay
      @MyBestLifeParaguay 3 місяці тому

      Hello Monika, I'm Ryan Aranda, thanks for tuning in! Ah yes, it is Adam, thank you for reminding me - and yes he gives some great insights into moving abroad. Thanks for following my journey - this is just the beginning and glad to have you here. I agree that Paraguay's popularity has skyrocketed in the last few years, but I think the majority of people who are serious about moving to Paraguay are doing so for the right reasons. And yes, there's definitely more people I've seen begin to help people with residency and showing houses (which I actually do in one of my videos - although I'm not the seller at this time - maybe down the line). I hope that most people act in good-faith, but I have heard of scammers. Once I'm settled down there after July 1, I'll actually be helping folks with residency myself, working together with my lawyer. He's very trustworthy and a good man with solid connections. As far as cities/pueblos, I love Caacupé for spiritual reasons, as it's sort of the Mecca of Paraguay. Every December 8 many Paraguayans visit, but the rest of the year it's incredibly tranquil, with the church plaza serving as the center of town, with nice local and some chain eatery's surrounding the church all with beautiful artisan works. I believe it's even cheaper to live there. Tobatí is another small town I would like to revisit, but I haven't been there in quite a few years, but of what I remember it was very tranquil. As far as foods, I like almost every traditional plate... I can't give all the names because they're in Guarani, but make sure you try the Tallarines (linguine type pasta dish) that usually comes with a tomato sauce and beef and potatoes in the sauce. Otherwise you can never go wrong with Lomito Árabes, Empanadas, and some of the Paraguayan Pizzas as well for quick food you'll find everywhere :)

    We're not latinos, we're hispanic americans in Paraguay, both words aren't the same

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay
      @MyBestLifeParaguay 3 місяці тому

      I hear ya... but I'd respectfully make the argument that we are both Hispanic and Latino. And not all Latinos are Hispanic, and I just thought to use the wider, more inclusive term. As far as myself, I usually say I'm Paraguayan American... or "paraguayo americano." But, the main point of this video is repatriation for those who have roots in Latin American countries... and our deeper thoughts around that phenomena and why it's becoming more popular in recent years.

      Many thanks! And yeah, many of us are struggling economically in the Western countries we reside in... I think it's arguably the best investment of your life to see if you can try to make it in a place like Paraguay... and there are many stunningly beautiful places in Paraguay. I love all the tropical plants, trees and fruits myself. You embrace nature on a new level. I like how you summed it up as well.. "land of enchanted offerings." Never thought to use those words but I certainly like it!

    Beautiful homes, super cheap in relation to the world! Paraguay Floods heavily, are these homes in that zone? Low elevation vs higher elevation, one wrong on right!

    • @MyBestLifeParaguay
      @MyBestLifeParaguay 3 місяці тому

      Much appreciated! And agreed, pricing is right if you ask me. As far as flooding concerns - no, most flooding happens closer to the rivers, creeks, and the bottom of hills on main driving routes. None of these are right by those places. I didn't see any red flags of flooding lines or anything like that in any of these houses either. Also, water filtration/plumbing is much better in newer homes. That unfortunately tends to be an issue for older homes built many decades ago.
