@@ocassionaljunkieforyou Thank you so much, really appreciate it! Let me know if you try any the ideas I suggested! Some other cool ones here in the comments as well - I like the audio juke box that a viewer suggested! ✌️
The music is way too loud! I can't understand without subtitles.
Please Please No Back Ground Music
Thanks for the feedback, yeah learned my lesson, apologies! ✌️
WHY IS THE BACKGROUND MUSIC SO DAMN LOUD?
found one of these in the recycle bin! sadly no psu. I tried a 65W and 90W but she keeps beeping 4x. Could be the board or could be the psu doesn't have enough Wattage. The hunt continues. If i can get it to boot up, i'll buy the caddy. Is that an affiliate link?
Yeah depending on the processor you might need more power, but I would think 90w would be sufficient. I went up to a 230w trying to get the GPU working. No, not an affiliate link. Good luck with it, and thanks for the comment! ✌️
Narration drowned out by background musak. Had to give up watching.
Thanks for the feedback, yeah learned my lesson, apologies! ✌️
I'm using jellyfin on a 2011 mac mini running linux mint. Works like a dream. Anyone can install jellyfin. So easy and powerful media server
Nice! Yeah those older Mac Minis are great with Linux! I appreciate the comment, thanks for watching! ✌️
Plex sucks. I much prefer Jellyfin. But your mention of Kodi has intrigued me
Yeah check it out; it's more of a media player than a media server like Jellyfin, but does scrape your media like Jellyfin. The 3rd party "add ons" in Kodi can be interesting. Also lots of different skins available for Kodi. Check out troypoint.com/kodi/ I appreciate the comment! ✌️
Oh I loved the video! I might actually do the NAS thing. Also could you tell me whay the background music you used is? Its very catchy haha
@@OokamiPuzzle Yeah a NAS is a fun and useful project! Funny, most people complain about the music! It's just something I threw together in Logic. I appreciate you watching and commenting! ✌️
@ToddTinkersWithTech Oh you made the music? Very good! Thats some dedication right there I only use my own music in my videos too its challenging! I love how your song sounds you should release it somewhere. Most people complaining probably aren't using headphones like me haha
I would love to see your in-depth vid on how to DIY my own arcade game. I'm only mildly nerdy, so I need a fully dumbed down version (minimum specs? Programs? Settings?), but I can build stuff! Do you know if the maximum ram is 16 GB (2 times 8)? A Linux command showed 4 banks but clearly there are only two. There is not a lot of info out there on this model.
@@JohnGlen502 Good question, I don't know the answer to that unfortunately... Most sources online say 16gb max. I wish I had a pair of 16gb sodimms to test it for you, but I don't. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! ✌️
@@ToddTinkersWithTech Thank you. Eight max per bank is probably right. It's been a nice little machine for years with just 4gb in each bank but it really needs more now.
This is the area of tech I'm most interested in as well. I love various mini PCs and especially used office machines of various sizes. I use them for the same things. Regarding the first topic, I also have been set up for SMB shares and Kodi. I started trying out Jellyfin earlier this year and it didn't work for me the way I was hoping. I had too many issues on the client side on desktop. On Android it was fine because it could work with external players which was important, though it didn't keep the right resume point in some cases. I also should mention I don't need transcoding right now in which case Jellyfin would be better suited. To be clear, I liked Jellyfin, but it wasn't fully where I needed it to be. The ease of setup of the server was really nice. I've been meaning to try Open Media Vault and did some reading on that a couple of months ago. It's on my list of things to do. I did read up on it compared to TrueNAS and I think OMV sounds like a better fit for me. Another project on my list is to turn a mini PC into a router to have more options and control over the stock firmware of my current router setup(which I do like). I picked up an older Zotac/Datto mini PC for that which has two network interfaces. I probably didn't need it as I have another Zotac I could have repurposed for that, but my plans for my machines keep changing so I thought I needed the second one. That possibly leaves me with an extra mini PC, which is a nice problem to have. As for the gaming aspect, that's my main interest, and I love putting Retroarch on everything. I like plain Retroarch. I'm very familiar with it and know my way around. I find the various bespoke images like Batocera irritating. I have never liked EmulationStation and I hate how disjointed it all feels. I'm quite aware that people find Retroarch infuriating to use, so this is a case of use what you like best. And I have one Dell Optiplex tower with a 4770(you got me beat there, barely) and I just threw an inexpensive used GPU, an RX550. Mostly I wanted to finally play Guilty Gear Xrd, and it's amazing how far that old setup goes as I realized I could run a number of interesting games I missed such as the Batman Arkham games which I also recently bought for about four bucks a game.
I can turn one into a mid level gaming PC you won't be able to run higher end games but the older games you can run. Though there's some backend stuff to allow the machine to have enough memory to run things quickly. I have a free Plex account and it's a good source for old movies and TV shows, I haven't tried the pro subscription yet but so far it's not necessary
@@RavenStorm332 Yeah a lot of those mid-level older games are still a ton of fun, not everything needs a 4070! I appreciate you watching and commenting! ✌️
TruNas scale is the way either bar metal or on proxmox.

got hexos to put on a few boxes like these
I just stumbled on your channel. For years when I'd upgrade my and my wife's PC to the next latest and greatest version of Windows I'd recycle one of the old desktops as a poor man's server. This last go around (Win 10) decided to use a laptop as home server to minimize power consumption. The server is a T420 Thinkpad, I replaced the HDD with an SSD and stuck a large HDD into the DVD drive bay. The laptop is the destination for scheduled backups, NetTime NTP time server for LAN devices and runs an Abyss web for internal family web stuff. With the desktop servers I used an KVM to share peripherals. Being a laptop it has its own display so found a spiffy HID sharing program called Input director that let you share kybd and mouse by simply moving the mouse to a predesignated side of the main computer screen. I was not aware of Home Assistant, thanks for the info. I'm not a fan of putting home stuff stuff into the cloud. I've built a number of home automation devices, they have a built in web interface but it is not easily customizable or integrate multiple devices into a unified whole. This sounds like something to add to my someday TO-DO list.
Nice, laptops make great basic servers! Great tip on Input Director, I'll check that out! Give Home Assistant a try, seems quite powerful, but lots of tinkering required. Good way to kill a rainy weekend...! I appreciate the comment! ✌
Started with Kodi, but having to configure each device was a pain. Switched to Jellyfin on a Pi5 and it's been so great. No issues with 1080p videos with a decent bit rate. Don't really do 4k. Paired with Radarr and Sonarr, it's been so perfect.
Very cool! You are right - configuring a new Kodi machine is time consuming!! Yeah I have been checking out Radarr & Sonar recently, powerful stuff!! I really appreciate the comment! ✌️
drop the background music its like sitting in the dentist waiting room you might get more hits
Maybe I really enjoy my dentist's waiting room! 😉 I appreciate the comment!
I use a second hand thin client for a multi-use server. I upgraded it with more ram and a bigger flash drive and it's become the brain of my home automation, media server etc. Highly recommended!
@@magnusgreel275 Nice! Yeah I'm doing the same with a fanless HP T530; which thin client are you using? Thanks for the comment! ✌️
home assistant is great i use an old laptop for it... i don't think it is a tough task for it unless maybe you use it for ( too many?) video cameras

Looks like from what I am seeing in other videos; it's limited to 36w, and won't boot with higher power use... Bummer, I was hoping to do an RX 6400 in it, which is 53w
@@ToddTinkersWithTech I have seen from reddit that rx6400 does seem to work but you need the 150w power adapter instead of the 90W one, it'd be great if you could test this as I have a T740 with 150w power adapter aswell. Also another option that can work is probably a Quadro T600
Really enjoyed your video. Informative with links. Straight forward and not overly presentational or cute. Well done. Insta-follow.
@@Charles78 Hey thanks! Much appreciated!! Some new videos coming soon... ✌️
How many watts is the external power brick I've heard it doesn't boot with one less than 180w with mxm. I bought a Plexpass subscription years ago because I wanted to make sure I could stream my ripped CD collection anywhere. I use it constantly, and it has been a worthwhile investment. It also allows me to share my small movie collection with family.
@@joshdieckmann595 Yeah the ability to share is really cool with Plex & Jellyfin! I appreciate the comment! ✌️
Generally I like using these types of smaller older PCs for a few things - Retro gaming (MAME) machines, DVD rippers, jukeboxes. I've also got plans to turn one in an AXE-FX type guitar FX unit. I've seen Batocera and need to give it go to update some of my old retro gaming machines when I find time. I've been meaning to make a HTPC also as the amount of apps available for TVs can leave a lot to be desired. Kodi's fine as a media centre if your collection isn't too big. I find it doesn't scrape correctly a lot of the time (even if you use the conventional naming required). That being said, I've also always had issues with Plex. That's why I currently just run Emby on a NAS to do all the background work and use Kodi on the TV to stream from Emby. You can use Jellyfin but I find that there's better options in Emby (even though it's proprietary).
@@peterschmidt9942 Oooh guitar FX? Wow, that is a cool idea!! Hadn't considered that before! Yeah scraping with Kodi can be hit or miss... I appreciate the comment! ✌️
@@ToddTinkersWithTech Yeah just going to install a mini PC, sound interface and probably a small 7 or 9" screen in a 2U or 3U rack case. I just need to see what FX software is available in Linux
Just jumped on tye jellyfin train... terribly un-impressed so far 🤷
I just stumbled across your channel... I'm a similar old school techie and im looking forward to more information on what i can do with a lot of my old tech 🤷
Much appreciated Robert, thanks for the comments! Some new videos are in the works!
Like @ashemoski said, you should turn the laptop fan upside down, so it can suck the hot air out of the receiver. It makes sense, because laptops usually sit on the fan and the hot air comes out at the bottom. I'm also using a laptop fan for a pre/pro and it does its job relatively well.
@@byron19800 Excellent suggestion, thanks! ✌️

You might want to replace the glass on the door with wire mesh screen to help better ventilate the cabinet.
@@watdanuqta-mf5ms Yeah thought about doing that, but I just open the door when it's in use. But that would be a cool project to tackle! ✌️
Hey Todd, have you tinkered with the mini PCIe slot at 6:07? There looks to be a port panel shown on the left at 6:00. I'm wondering if that's where the factory WLAN card went, and if that could sustain a dual 2.5GbE NIC.
Yeah, actually I did successfully install a WiFi/Bluetooth card in that mini pcie slot, guessing it might play nice with a dual 2.5gb nic? It's an E-keyed slot, for 2230 size cards only. Definitely could use the full pcie slot if you aren't installing a GPU etc.
@ToddTinkersWithTech hey, thanks for the update, it was really helpful! With that faster PCIe slot, I think that makes the T740 better than the Wyse 5070
@@primeral Yeah I'm seeing these on eBay for around $75, neat little machine! I still am trying to find a cheap RX 6400 GPU to try out in it. Let me know if the 2.5gb NIC works in it!
I use a computer fan on top of my receivers. what a difference it makes. give me air flow or give me death said the receiver
Haha, yeah, a computer fan works great as well, thanks for the comment! 👍✌️
I used Plex with a Synology drive for a while, and it would work well with ripped DVDs but stutter on Blu-Rays. From time to time, Plex would self-nuke, and I would have to set it up again. It is extremely picky on how you name and organise your files, to the point where I couldn't get everything working since Plex hides its errors fairly well. I just got fed up with it and stopped using it. When they went commercial, I just gave up on the whole thing. I will try Kodi and see how that goes. I have a 14TB harddrive with about 1000 ripped DVDs and Blu-Rays (99% of which are my own), and I would love to get something working. I have an old Mac Mini I could use for this, as well as an XBox 360 Slim, which maybe can be converted.
@@MorningNapalm Thanks for the comment! Yeah I like Kodi for it's relative simplicity but it does lack some cool features that Plex & Jellyfin offer. Try Kodi, which would be more of a client that would see the media on your Synology, and if that doesn't do it for you, maybe try Jellyfin or Emby. ✌️
Thank you great tips laptop fan
