As the State of Maryland's official museum of African American heritage, the Banneker-Douglass Museum serves to document, interpret, and promote the history and culture of African American Marylanders through exhibitions, programs and projects in order to improve the understanding and appreciating of American's rich cultural diversity for all. The Banneker-Douglass Museum is a component of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture, which is a unit of the Governor's Office of Community Initiatives.
2024 Kwanzaa Celebration Recap Video
This year’s Kwanzaa Celebration was a joyful event featuring a performance by Ni Dembaya African Drum & Dance Ensemble, a Harambe, shopping with local vendors and cultural fare provided by Swahili Village. Attendees were delighted to learn and celebrate the principles of Kwanzaa and participate in an artmaking workshop led by Artist Jabari Jefferson. These creations will be included in the artwork that will be installed in the upcoming exhibit. Jefferson is the exhibiting artist for the upcoming BDTM exhibit ’Sacred Spaces’ which opens in February 2025!
