Professional Speedway locations closed 1980 - 2000; what does the site look like from above in 2024?
Each Speedway location which has seen professional racing but has closed between 1980 and 2000, seen from above using Google Earth data. My definition of professional racing is the top two tiers, not any third tier which has largely been amateur and/or for rider development.
There are 13 locations, use the chapters to just see your track of interest.

Using data, I map the rise and decline of team Speedway in the UK, list the Issues facing the sport in 2022 and my conclusions as to the future of the sport in the UK. It amazes me that there are a dozen full time permanent superb racing circuits in Britain from Knockhill in the North to Brands Hatch in the south yet when it came to Speedway in the boom years greedy promoters did nothing but take money out of the game and, with a few exceptions put nothing back. That, in my opinion, is why the sport is in the state it's in. When the Sport was down to a handful of First Division teams their promoters didn't want to expand because it meant giving up a share of the then Wembley World final. From day one nobody saw the big picture or planned for the future. Football, which was the only sport bigger than speedway, did and look at it now.

  • @markparsons5549

    Incredible that 'noise' isn't relevant when football is concerned,maybe because speedway promoters can't fill brown envelopes with the same amount of money when dealing with the council as football chiefs can

    Weymouth?

    • @speedwayuk
      @speedwayuk 2 місяці тому

      Brian, The definition I have used when producing these 2 videos is PROFESSIONAL Speedway which I believe has been the top two leagues (at the time of production of the video, it may change in future if my fears are right and we need to move to a single professional league). Any 3rd tier league over the years has been aimed at rider development in my opinion. I think the Weymouth last full professional season was in 1984 hence they were included in the video covering the period from 1980 to 2000. There are a few locations where some amateur racing still occurs (e.g. IOW springs to mind) but if professional speedway has stopped, I still call it a closed location.

    • @speedwayuk

      Adrian, the answer to that is in the video, jump to Eastbourne! Remember, my definition is when professional speedway ended rather than considering amateur / rider development racing. Some locations I have called "closed to Professional racing" actually still exist and host amateur meetings, Isle of Wight springs to mind

      John, like many sports, there can be Speedway meetings which are less exciting but there can be real gems in terms of heats where two riders battle for position trying different lines over 4 laps. How many F1 races have been settled in the first 30 seconds and that event then goes on for hours, rather than a minute or so with Speedway? Even when Speedway heats are settled in bends 1 & 2, at least you are seeing 15 starts and you can see the whole race, not just a very small portion of it. Give me Speedway over F1 every day! But you have a fair point about the need to encourage racing which I fully support and the best way to achieve this is by firstly having a well designed track and then the preparation needs to be good. Thirdly you need good "racers" such as Chris Harris for example. The new Belle Vue national stadium is a venue which seems to really encourage exciting racing.

    So unlucky some tracks / stadiums catching fire with no one around. I just think it’s so sad. That a family sport with no bad behaviour is going. Different world. You don’t even see kids playing football over the park these days. All on computers and social media. Think staying in is the new going out !!

    • @speedwayuk
      @speedwayuk 3 місяці тому

      Paul, I am a little more cynical about these fires, it helps the case for redevelopment if the stadium is wrecked. In terms of a general trend of staying in, I think you are right but some other spectator sports are still surviving (lower league football) and some are thriving (top two football divisions, F1 etc). Speedway can be a great night out but the time to address the decline was in 80s and 90s, now we have lost critical mass so it is a one way direction. Try and enjoy it while you can even if it now probably means a longer journey

    • @speedwayuk

      Actually, the reason I didn't include Leicester is that they went to a new stadium in 2011 (Beaumont Park Stadium) and are racing in 2024. Therefore they don't qualify as a town without professional Speedway in my mind. I suppose I shot myself in the foot when I included the old Workington stadium in the post 2000 closures when they are now riding professionally again, I made this exception to show a little bright spark as a "new" stadium was created post pandemic. Anyway, that is my crooked logic :)

    Never understood team speedway. Every other form of motor sport is every man for himself. Never understood what all this league nonsense had to do with a form of motorcycle racing. My parents, aunts and uncles, were all huge New Cross fans in its heyday, but their enthusiasm for speedway racing never rubbed off on me. Instead occasional visits to the old Crystal Palace race track fired a passion for motor racing and 'proper' motorcycle racing in me.

      From a promotional standpoint, the idea with a team is to get the loyalty aspect as individual riders come and go. From a racing standpoint when you see team riding, two riders riding side by side to stop a better rider behind from overtaking is a thing of beauty but it is quite rare to see!

    The lack of free-to-air TV coverage is in no small part of this. I remember when the domestic results were read out on BBC Radio and now they don't even mention the World GP results. This is not unique to Motor Sport however. I am a die-hard sports fan and the dumbed down BBC choose to concentrate on just a few sports and neglect to cover a whole range of sports that should be at least mentioned. ITV are partly to blame as well. They used to cover the World Championships but not a mention now. The loss of BBC Grandstand and ITV World of Sport is highly regrettable and was utterly misguided. These programmes should be brought back. I appreciate that satellite TV pays big bucks but the governing bodies of a plethora of sports should realise that terrestrial TV is important for publicity. A hybrid policy of terrestrial and satellite TV would seem to be the right policy. Cricket is an example of this as the England Cricket Board has finally come to realise the need for terrestrial coverage as well as chasing bid money. Also the domination of Football of the airwaves to a ridiculous degree has been detrimental to a whole range of sports.

    • @speedwayuk
      @speedwayuk 3 місяці тому

      Some reasonable points here. It is depressing how Speedway has gone from the second largest spectator sport to a minority sport that most general media ignores which in a viscous cycle just makes the decline greater especially as older spectators pack up and there aren't sufficient younger spectators being introduced to the sport

    I used to go to watch my loval team Stoke Potters at Loomer Road when I lived there. It's such a shame that speedway doesn't get things like TV coverage which would be so easy to do. With a bit of exposure I'm sure more people would spectate.

      True, I have ignored situations where a club moved stadium without much of a gap in riding. Workington is a notable exception as Speedway was lost for a number of seasons before being reborn. That's my thinking anyway!

    The first UK Speedway track was at High Beech in Epping Forest on the edge of London There has been a bikers tea hut there for as long as I can remember, still there today and bikers still frequent the place

      True. However, without a stadium as such, the club could not compete with the bigger teams, and they duly folded after the 1930 season.

    If it was still popular today, Just Stop Oil would have a sit down protest on the track, how times change

      Yes, I don't know whether we will ever see a move from 500cc engines to electric motors!!

    It is the most boring of sports that is why it is finishing.

      That's your opinion David but in it's heyday it was the second biggest spectator sport in UK which says that quite a few disagreed with you. I agree that you can have (what I consider as) bad meetings where each race is clearly decided by bends 1 & 2 but then again, I've been to some quite dull football matches and F1 has never interested me, surely as a spectator you want to see all the action??

    I saw racing at Isle of Wight once. It was the first and only time I have seen sidecar Speedway racing. What a bonkers sight, but really entertaining and immense fun. Great little circuit. I also went to Arena Essex a couple of times. It was really well attended and a great stadium for Speedway. Sad what has happened. I used to regularly go to Wimbledon as well. What happened there is even sadder :-(

      Yes, I have enjoyed meetings on IoW and at Arena Essex. The track at Arena Essex was a bit too small for me but made a different challenge for riders than other tracks!

    I remember the "golden" years of watching it on tv as a kid back in the day and in the late 90's finally got to go and watch my local team at Wimbledon for a few years. Attendances were always poor, with a hard core turning up every week. Saw some great racing and a couple of youngsters coming through. However, as with many others the stadium got sold to developers and as no new venue could be found it finished. The saddest thing of all was on the last night of Speedway the stadium was FULL. I mean totally packed and not a spare seat or standing spot to be had!! Which proved that there was still an audience, if it were marketed correctly. Other motor sports still thrive so why not Speedway. So sad to see the decline

      So true. The time for action to try and arrest the decline was really in the 80s and 90s, I'm afraid it is too late now

    How I hate the word Greyhounds our housing developments or financial. Once you go, it's in your blood. I first went as a young child to the Reading Racers in Tilehurst. Then they moved to Tilehurst. I used to go with my wife & then when we had a son. On the day it's the greatest motorcycle sport ever. Oh, how I miss it at 62 years old. Oh to be a multi millionaire & bring Reading back. Use it or lose it fans. You will regret it when it's gone. God bless Denny Pyatt. Per Jonsson. My hero Jan Anderson, Boogaloo Bobby Swartz, and my all time Number 7 & super trier Tim Hunt. God bless you all.

      Never made it to Tilehurst but went to Smallmead many many times. Yes, the stadium was tired but when you see the site now from the air, just demolished without any redevelopment, it makes me so sad that Speedway could have maybe continued although crowds were getting thinner

    It’s sad really, I’m only 14 so I didn’t get to see the brilliant era of speedway. The likes of Nicki Pedersen and Tomasz Gollob

      Lovely to hear from a youthful Speedway supporter, a rarity these days. Looks like you get down to Oxford which is my "local" track (although too many miles away). It is madness that I watched them recently versus Ipswich and that could be viewed as a local derby!!!
