We love hiking and backpacking. We love wild places and natural landscapes. We love wandering those trails.
Come along with us and we'll show you some.
Trails of Wander follows our boots on the trails and beyond.
It is our personal video project recording our experiences in the outdoor. Where we went, what we saw.
We like to share it with others who are interested in hiking and backpacking, including those who for any reason cannot go out there or do not want to go out there but love the outdoor and enjoy outdoor videos.
Trails Of Wander videos are not meant to guide or advise your hiking or backpacking experience through the landscapes they present. They are simply our way to share a glimpse of the natural beauty that our boots have walked through. They are just for entertainment and inspiration.

Sierra Nevada backpacking: Dumbbell Pass and Dumbbell Lakes - Kings Canyon National Park, California
Eastern Sierra backpacking, Sierra Nevada: Cross country route to Dumbbell Lakes from Marion Lake via the Dumbbell Pass. Afternoon hike to the Dumbbell Lakes basin and the Cataract Creek Pass.
Kings Canyon National Park
Big Pine, California.
Eastern Sierra, Sierra Nevada.
Trailhead: Tabosee Pass Trailhead, Big Pine
August 2024
Itinerary:
This video covers the fourth day of a seven day backpacking trip from the Taboose Pass Trailhead which included the Taboose Pass, Cardinal Mountain, the Muro Blanco Trail, Cartridge Pass, Cartridge Creek, Marion Lake, Dumbbell Pass, Dumbbell Lakes, Cataract Creek Pass, Amphitheater Lake, Cataract Creek, PCT/JMT trail, Palisade Lakes, Mother Pass, Upper Basin, Bench Lake, Taboose Pass and exit to the Tabosee Pass Trailhead.
The section from Marion Lake to Dumbbell Lakes across the Cartridge Creek drainage and up and over Dumbbell Pass is a cross country section. A fainted use trail exists in a few spots, but overall the hike is off trail. Navigation is pretty straight forward but it is advisable to support the hike with a GPS enabled hiking phone App or a GPS navigation device providing off-line maps (Or a paper map and compass if you want to go old school). The cross country terrain is easy to traverse up to Dumbbell Pass, after which the descent to Dumbbell Lakes entails navigating through snow fields and boulder fields. The cross country route becomes easy again from Dumbbell Lakes to the top of Cataract Creek Pass through the Dumbbell Lakes basin.
Day 4: Marion Lake to Dumbbell Pass, descent to Dumbbell Lakes. Camp at Dumbbell Lakes. Afternoon hike across the Dumbbell Lakes basin up to Cataract Creek Pass and back.
Trip Section Stats:
8 mi, Approx. 2200 ft elevation gain.
AllTrails Map:
www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/afternoon-backpack-trip-at-taboose-pass-to-cardinal-mountain-aa0d2a8
Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stopped recording only once camp was setup for each day.
Hike Notes:
Another incredibly spectacular day for this fantastic seven day backpacking trip in the Sierras. The route was all cross country but not particularly difficult: the descent from Dumbbell Pass to the Dumbbell Lakes is essentially a large boulder field. I took my time and picked the best line I could see. The main Dumbbell Lake is on par with Marion Lake in regards of landscape beauty, although it is very different as tree presence is scarse and the landscape is a high alpine rock scape. The camp spot was also amazingly beautiful, I could enjoy evening and morning golden hours to be remembered. So was the hike up Cataract Creek Pass across the Dumbbell Lakes basin. Storms were brewing all around me, but I got lucky and got very little rain. The stormy sky skyline of the Palisade horizon from Cataract Creek Pass was also something to remember. Below was Amphitheater Lake that I would visit the day after, another impossibly blue lake of the high Sierra landscape. I had Dumbbell Lakes all for myself upon my return to camp - indeed I only met a group of four backpackers in the afternoon heading over Cataract Creek Pass for the day. The weather was clearing so I could walk around the shore in the evening light. Sierra beauty at its best. When I left in the morning I kept thinking I want to return on this route as it is too beautiful not to visit again!

Thanks for watching and have fun out there!
@ ❤️
Thanks for showing us all the beautiful lakes in Sabrina Basin. It looks like the cross-country route you took from Hungry Packer Lake to Echo Lake doesn't have much talus field, will try it out next time.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, the section from Hungry Packer Lake to Echo Lake does not have much talus fields. If you continue down to Moonlight lake to complete the loop to Hungry Packer Lake there is a bigger talus field around Moonlight, probably about 1/4 mile or maybe a little more. Have fun out there!
That is an incredibly beautiful lake. It is on my list to go there someday. I have subbed.
Marion Lake is truly stunning. Thanks for watching and subbing. Enjoy it out there!
Incredible hike, such beautiful mountain lakes and vistas!
The Cartridge Creek basin is pure Sierra beauty! Tx for watching and enjoy it out there!
Such beautiful videography! Thank you for taking us along.
You are very welcome, glad you enjoyed the video! Have fun out there!
Beautiful film! Thank you for the notes:)Always love reading trail registers at shelters. Nice to see the NF Storm1. I have the original sure over 100 nights. Always have been dry and warm, replaced the stuff bag and stakes now under 3lbs. My 75 lb service dog makes it interesting glad I’m 5’3. Trail on!🥾TnT AT 86
Thanks for watching. I like the NF Storm 1 too, sturdy and reliable but not too heavy for one person - no non sense tent as some of the ultra-light ones. In fact I got the Storm 1 in Bishop during my Summer trip in the Sierras because my Nemo Hornet flyer zipper gave up on the previous seven days backpacking trip... Enjoy it out there!
@ 🤟
Thank you for sharing your beautiful video of your wonderful hiking trip. Ah, the Eastern Sierra . . . .
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed the video. I agree, Ah the Eastern Sierra.... can't wait to go back there. Have fun out there!
Amazing footage. Beautiful Gin-clear water .
The Cartridge Creek drainage is beautiful and Marion Lake is among the coolest lakes I have visited in the Sierras.
A route I’ve always wanted to do - spectacular - thx for sharing
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed the video. Cartridge Pass and Cartridge Creek are truly spectacular! Enjoy it out there!
Another epic trek in the Sawtooth’s. Thanks
Yes, this was a great overnighter! Beautiful landscape.
I’ve been to Redfish and Alpine but never made it to Barons Lake
The Baron divide and Baron Lakes are great. Beautiful camping as well. This video is pretty old and not that good, but I guess you got the gist of the hike. Have fun out there!
Oh man! You nailed that! I worked in Sun Valley 80’-84’ and would spend time fishing n hiking around Stanley. Always broke and no time. Guess I’m going back. Thanks so much. ❤
Glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you have a great time back in the Sawtooths! Enjoy it out there!
Your recent vids are the most enjoyable wilderness videos I’ve ever seen. Thank you! More please!!
Thanks for your comment, it made my day! Videos will keep coming, sure thing! Enjoy it out there.
Wow. What a wonderland. Thank you for sharing
You are welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Have fun out there!
Another beautiful place! Tx for the share...
You are welcome. Yes Cartridge Creek is fantastic! Enjoy it out there!
Do you recall what the overnight temps were, or what degree sleeping bag you brought?
If I recall correctly overnight temps were in the mid to upper 40s; anyhow I would not say it was cold. I was using the Marmot Hydrogen 30 degree sleeping bag, so certainly not a cold weather sleeping bag. It was not cold down at Tanner beach. Thanks for watching.
@TrailsOfWander thanks for the reply!
Your video are exceptional! They make us feel like were right there too. We've been binge watching your Wind River backpacking trips. We love hiking to alpine lakes and the Winds have so many beautiful ones. Our only hesitation, Grizzly Bears. Have you ever seen one or more on any of your hikes in the Wind River Range? How were the mosquitoes in August?
I had never seen a bear while hiking in the Winds. Nor I have met anybody who said they saw one. I have read of the presence of Grizzly in the Northern part of the range, but I have not hiked up there yet (planning to go this summer). I am not particularly concerned. Keeping the camp clean and cooking/eating away from the tent and storing food away as well. I use a bear canister in bear country so I can pretty much camp above the tree line without having to guess where to hang the food. Mosquitoes, I have been in the Winds in August twice and basically there were no Mosquitos but I know that earlier in season they are heavily present. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@TrailsOfWander Thanks so much for all the helpful info. We always use a bear canister, it's just like yours. I just got my own canister for Christmas, since we have multi day backpacking trips planned for this year. I can't wait to see the northern Winds from your upcoming trip.
Such a beautiful and incredible film. Really beautiful!
Timelapses are cool in those amazing places! Check out the 700+ Miles Best Campsites video if you have a chance, I like it even better than the timelapses. Enjoy it out there!
Wonderful
Thank you! Cheers!
Kern headwaters is a special place. The JMT avoids the best places which is fine by me!
The upper Kern is an amazing place! Also, the JMT is certainly beautiful, but I agree with you there is a lot more beauty out there in the Sierras than can be seen hiking the JMT corridor. I like to use the JMT/PCT corridor as the Sierra highway from which I can take many exits to go out and explore :)
Thanks for sharing these amazing views! 👍22
You are very welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Have fun out there!
Agree, thank you! I lived in Mammoth Lakes for 10yrs and honestly did not do this area.... and now want to get back and hike it!
Hi what lake is 04:05?? Can you camp anywhere there?
Or can you camp on steelhead?
4:05 on the video is the unnamed Tarn between Lake Helen and Shamrock Lake (closer to Lake Helen). I did not look for campsites while hiking this day hike but I think you can easily find some in this area. I would look on the other side of the creek away from the swampy area.
Yes, I think there are plenty of campsites around Steelhead Lake or up towards the small lakes above it. Again I did not look for any specifically on this hike, but I am confident you will find several.

Wow! 700 plus 🎉 ! Each frame is breathtaking! Loved the Peruvian and Chilean scapes though, maybe the animals added to the scenes along with those brilliant orange hues!
The colors of the Andes are definitely something else! Glad you liked the video. Enjoy the outdoor!
Beautiful. Just beautiful. Hope to follow in your footsteps in the future
Glad you enjoyed the video. The Sabrina Basin is a great backpacking destination. Enjoy it out there!
Thanks for sharing your video - we were in that area a few years ago but not able to make it to all the lakes you saw.
There are quite a lot of lakes in Sabrina Basin, many are beautiful. That's why we returned there after our first hike up the basin a few years ago. Thanks for watching. Enjoy it out there!
Very nicely shot. Thank you for sharing your wonderful backpacking trip.
Glad you enjoyed the video. More Sierra videos to come. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for another great video! I was looking for an Eastern Sierra destination to take two newcomers - looks like this is it!
I agree Sabrina Basin would be pretty much perfect for that! Enjoy it out there!
Little Lake Valley and/or Twenty Lakes Basin would also be absolutely perfect for an initial day hike, with less elevation gain overall. Have fun out there!
Maravilloso ✨!!! Los paisajes y campamentos están excelentes, el 2024 fue un bonito año 🙌.
Gracias José. ¡El 2024 ha sido un año fabuloso de mochilerismo para mí! ¡Estoy deseando que llegue el 2025!
👍✨🙌
Laguna 513 es muy linda!
So happy to see your wonderful video because my wife and I backpacked to most of those lakes in July. It was an awesome trip and so fun to see it again with your video
The Sabrina Basin is a fantastic place to backpack, glad you enjoyed the video! Have fun out there!
Absolutely beautiful! We hope one day to backpack the Sabrina Basin. Love all those lakes. You had perfect weather after the first night. My husband used to camp with his family at Lake Sabrina as a child. His parents weren't hikers. Thanks for taking me along.
Thanks for watching! I hope you backpack the Sabrina Basin soon. Overall pretty low effort for high reward! Enjoy it out there.
Que bonitas vistas 🙌!!! Maravilloso resumen de los paisajes, campos, miradores, etc 👍.
Lugares hermosos!
Just incredible!

Brilliant scenes my friend! This looks and feels just amazing!

Sure will. Enjoy it out there!
Another beautiful backpacking film and adventure.
Thanks for watching! More Sierra videos to come. Enjoy it out there!
I love the Sierras. Endless adventures. Thanks for taking me along. Beautiful video too.
Glad you enjoyed the video. The Sierras are beautiful! Enjoy it out there!
Really great video! I love music but i appreciate the fact you don't add the background music to the video. I really get a sense of the solitude. When i hear the breeze or the birds i really feel like i'm there.
I appreciate you noticing that - I use music for the initial highlights of the trip, but I like to keep the focus on the natural sounds of the wilderness for the rest of the video. I think it helps conveying the true experience of hiking.
Very beautiful landscape. Thanks for sharing these amazing views! 👍19
Glad you enjoyed the video. It's a beautiful area.
bro got legs
Thank you for taking us on another beautifully captured trip in the Sierras! Somehow hearing the sound of your steps on the trail makes me feel like I am hiking the trail, too. Such gorgeous videography!
Our Pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate that you like the footage with the natural sounds of the trail, I like them too. More Sierra videos to come. Enjoy it out there!
This is for sure some of the most beautiful nature in the world. I enjoyed your wonderful video with my morning Coffee. It was great ❤ I visit some some of the places years ago so it was nice to remember it all again. Thanks 😊😊😊
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video (and the coffee 😊). Enjoy it out there!

Nice video. I haven’t been out to Clear Creek in the Winter. Very beautiful views, but sounded very cold. I did it last in November, and it was perfect hiking weather, but very different views. I’m contemplating a next Clear Creek hike in March or April. I like the idea of a Sumner Wash campsite, but those are very big first and last days in the Canyon for the Old Guy. I try to keep the segments under 10 miles; hard to do with Bright Angel being closed.
I did this trip during the second part of February and frankly it was not that cold once descending a couple of miles down from the rim. Camps were not cold as well. I see your point regarding the Sumner Wash camp. Yes, it is very scenic, particularly with the snow, but it is a dry camp and it requires significant mileage if done as first or last day. Enjoy your hiking!
I absolutely love how you film and edit your videos. We are planning a similar route this summer in the Sawtooth's. We will start where you did, head up Sand Mountain Pass and make our way to Everly and Plumber Lakes. You video is so helpful. We've never been to the Sawtooth's and I can't wait!!!
You're going to love the Sawtooths, the landscape is amazing! I will check out your channel. Thanks for watching and enjoy it out there!
Such a beautiful area to backpack in. Your video really showcases the majesty and spectacular scenery of the Eastern Sierras. Great musical selection which helped create the ambience. Thanks.
Thank you @AbelTravel, I am glad you enjoy our videos. Center Basin is a gem of the Sierras. Enjoy it out there!
