Overprotection is not kindness; it is disrespectful.
Overprotection is not kindness; it is patronizing and disrespectful (Maslow). A way of saying “You are not strong. You are not capable of solving life’s problems.” It robs people of learning to trust themselves and their own judgement. What emerges is a fragility that makes life’s [inevitable] difficulties unbearable.
Self-Belief and Resilience are the psychological shields in life. They only form through encountering, engaging, grappling with & overcoming obstacles.

    so the kid that wasn't paid for being tested were basically used as child labor or you can as say slave labor is not a reward if you work for it, So should I stop rewarding my worker with cash for their work?

      not exactly. Alfie Kohn writes about this in his book. Money is more special because we all need it to live in this society. There is evidence showing that people will also be demotivated if they get paid to little to have a good life. However, using cash as an incentive above a certain point, will work just as any other incentive on your motivation. Yes, if I pay you 40.000$ per day, you will be happy about all the money you have, but it will not make you love an activity that you hate. You will do it (bribe) but still hate it regardless.

    the ”establishment” represented in the audience by those 2 ladies are in a difficult situation. They know deep inside that the actual school system is killing the joy and passion out of the children.. and she/they think like ”how can i renounce at rewards (and grades), there it will be no more learning, i have to manipulate them, i have to force them to learn what the program says”....”i have to maintain my job, etc ”. Watch Ken Robinson to further understand how school kills creativity and passion with laser precision, almost no one escapes.

    My Granddaughters and we have custody of them. They go to a school that uses rewards for good behavior. Most of the time they end up rewarding the bad behavior. I"m looking for a good plan to suggest/implement in an IEP. PBIS will not be used. I will remove them from this school, if I have to.

    When Oprah says "We all loved those gold stars" I wish Alfie would have responded by illustrating how the fond feelings of nostalgia and happiness were for the gold start and not the thing that the gold stars were supposed to be encouraging.

    What he is saying is very similar to what Marshall Rosenberg says in "Nonviolent Communication". What matter is WHY the child or young person behaves in a particular way. Marshall also says educating children using rewards and punishments teaches them to become factory fodder in peacetime and cannon fodder in wartime.

    Kids know when they are being manipulated be either punishment or reward, they are also smart enough to understand an explanation of real rationale behind attempts at control. Choices and honesty. Autonomy in education. What a concept. Kids are also quite capable of engaging in counter control. A little respect for autonomy in education would be so healing for so many people.

    I think Alfie Kohn's theory makes sense because its important to motivate and encourage the child to do the action for the love of it. Its going to be a harder and longer process but its the right way to do it. We can't keep rewarding kids for action. I have tried and my son gets bored. So now I am going to follow Alfie Kohn's method where you encourage the child to do something because in the long run it will help him.

    I think it's plausible that Texas teacher is confused by the reward system because it's possible some kids may have actually figured out they like to read once the program got underway, but that's not what Kohn is arguing. She kept shaking her head like "nope. nooope".

    • @calippo4202
      @calippo4202 2 роки тому

      Well and what most people also forget. The science shows that most kids tend to be demotivated by rewards. Some kids who may be intrinsically motivated by something in the book already dont have their intrinsic motivation compromised by a reward. This is what most people seem to struggle with. Not EVERYONE loses motivation by rewards and ususally not for EVERY activity. But the majorit of people do, a significant majority. This is why rewards are not a good method. In total, they dont work.

      Eric nailed it. And I'd like to add: most of the audience does not have an appreciation for research findings. I wish so bad he could have had 30 seconds (somewhere in between all those "we'll be right back" breaks) to explain how powerful research findings really are. "We have done this over and over with thousands of kids/adults and we find the same thing...this is a fact, not an opinion. Kids ACTUALLY perform/feel worse in the end when they do things for rewards. Under strict, carefully created experimental settings...."

    • @zhana4518
      @zhana4518 5 років тому

      @@EnglishWithMrBaker He does say, "In psychology, this has been shown over and over again". So he implies that these results are from research studies, even though he does not explicitly say so.

  • @Stillillgal
    @Stillillgal 10 років тому

    He confuses the term positive reinforcement. It's obvious that if you give a child money it will stop interest in the task. He received a reward for doing nothing and lost interest in the incentive to solve the problem \ Puzzle But people are getting positive reinforcement not only by people but also by the world itself \ solving promlems

    • @Muskar2
      @Muskar2 10 років тому

      The difficulty I see is if the positive reinforcements become predictable and it starts becoming the goal itself. It's great to be acknowledged or finding a (re)solution to a problem - because it helps building self-confidence as well - but again, it's very important that it shouldn't be the goal. Learning is a lifelong process and it's going to take a lot of motivation to keep going. Curiosity can so easily be over-written by greed (or other selfish behavior) if you're not careful, and I think the lost human potential today is outright sad.

      Muskar you missunderstood me. sorry about that

  • @kurtismookie

    I see that the clouding problem with this experiment is that the kids were paid before completing the puzzle. However, most parents who reward good grades don't give their kids the bribe until after they have met the goal (i.e. good grades, or completing the puzzle).
