This video is 2nd in the series of indoor air purifying plants in which I will be talking about 6 plants that require more attention and care as compared to the previously discussed plants. Additionally, these plants are bigger in size and require big pots for healthy growth.
1. Peace lily: It is one of the most popular house plants due to their low maintenance and beautiful appearance. It has got dense glossy leaves and pretty white flowers with unique shape! It efficiently absorbs harmful vapors from alcohol and acetone which can have adverse effects on our health. Acetone is commonly found in nail polish remover, varnishes paints and rubbing alcohol, overexposure to which can lead to headache, lethargy, low blood pressure, and in severe cases acetone poisoning as well. Peace lily absorbs these harmful acetone levels from the air. It also neutralizes benzene and carbon monoxide from the atmosphere. One more advantage of having them in your home is, they reduce mold-spores from the surrounding air which can cause throat irritation, coughing, and skin irritation. It requires a moderate amount of sunlight and the best part is it will clearly indicate it to you when it needs water by dropping the leaves. So provide them with sufficient water at least once every week.
2. Areca palm: The next plant on my list is areca palm also known as Golden cane palm or yellow palm. Besides cleaning the air by removing pollutants from the atmosphere, it is an effective humidifier and a wonderful plant to have in your house. The leaves of areca palm produce Negative ions, which effectively remove particles such as dust, mold spores, bacteria, and allergens. It is an extremely good air purifying plant and has the 8th highest removal rate for formaldehyde as per NASA’s clean air study. They generally grow very tall with proper care and maintenance. They require a lot of light to grow but do not like direct sunlight. Also, don’t forget to water them well especially during summers. They require a good amount of water but make sure the plant is in a well-drained pot to avoid rotting of the root.
3. Chinese Evergreen: Next up is Aglaonema, more commonly known as the Chinese evergreen. This gorgeous leafy indoor plant emits a significant amount of oxygen. It also improves air quality and filters indoor air pollutants and toxins. It is slow-growing plant so you can use a small pot initially and keep it on your work table. These plants are best known to increase mood and productivity, reduce stress and fatigue, and enhance concentration. It is a hardy plant and can survive in almost any indoor atmosphere as it does not require too much light. They can be easily propagated from their stem. When it comes to watering your aglaonema, make sure to water it only when the soil is dry. Excess water will rotten its roots and hamper your plant's growth.
4. Boston Fern: Boston fern belongs to the species of fern and is an evergreen perennial plant. They can reach up to a height of 40 inches and are known for their lush green foliage and feathery appearance. They not only improve indoor air quality but also help in restoring moisture to the air naturally. They have excellent air purifying properties and are very a very good option for people with dry skin, dry noses, and sore throat. Additionally, ferns are very good at removing formaldehyde from the atmosphere and help in absorbing toluene and xylene. For a happy and healthy fern a fairly bright light is sufficient but avoids harsh exposure to sunlight. Make sure you water your plan adequately and the soil remains moist at all times.
5. Philodendron Xanadu: The next plant in my list is philodendron Xanadu. The name philodendron derives from greek words where Philo means love and Dendron means tree! This classic plant is one of the most popular houseplants and is fairly easy to grow. They are particularly very helpful in removing toxins from the air we breathe, especially formaldehyde. Unfortunately, they are not good at removing ammonia, benzene, or other household chemicals from the air. They require low to moderate sunlight so do not keep your plant direct sunlight this will burn its leaves. Also, plant your philodendrons only when the soil becomes dry.
6. Croton: So our last plant for today is croton and it is one of my favorite houseplants because of its beautiful colors! You will be surprised to know that the oil from the seeds of crotons is used to make medicines, they are extremely helpful in cleaning the stomach and intestines and solving gallbladder problems. It is extremely good at removing formaldehyde and stubborn volatile organic compounds VOCs from the atmosphere. The most important thing to keep in mind for croton care is the amount of water and quality of the soil. It requires a rich potting mix and a moderate amount of light.
