It looks like they saw something with the switch that they didn't like. They're pulling off the 2 track which is 10 MPH.

This was the beginning of the train horn apocalypse on the UP.

Nice shots but it confuses me. CSX shows M427 as a Waterville, ME. to Selkirk, NY. train. NS lists 11R as a Mechanicsville, NY to East Binghamton train. CSX lists LA4 as L073 a Lawrence yard switcher. How was M427 and 11R both in Ayer? Do you have an update on trains originating, terminating, working or changing crews at Ayer?

Super cool! They always bought the latest motive power for their operations. Those C40-8s were great. And, IMHO, those last GE hood units were that company's best looking of them all.

There's a lot more trees on that curve east of the fishery now. That grade crossing by the fishery now has gates and lights. And most importantly, that single track bottleneck for the Cedar River crossing was double tracked around 2000.
