i recently had a trip to sikkim, it went smooth. you should get to NJP, without getting influenced by the people in station just get to the Siliguri Bus station and get a bus. and about hotels, i think Airbnbs are better than hotels tbh , yeah it will be a little bit costly but it will be smooth sailing. and you can ask about permits and all these things there in the office in gangtok or some locals, which will be better . atleast you wont get scammed by anyone like this.
