So thankful they have a good home to go to. Maybe they will give Laddie a try and it will work out. He is a very sweet boy. You are being very strong in letting them go so you can move forward. It doesn't make it any easier, though. ❤ Thinking about you.

Thank you. Even this morning when I let them out, and refilled the food bowls and water, I just wanted to sit in the grass and enjoy them. Of course, straight out of the bed, I was a feast for the skeeters. I 'm so glad I got to watch the 1st chicks hatched here by a momma grow up. I know some people, even some family don't quite get the grief I have over my chickens. I just figure it is their loss for never having made friends with their birds or ever known the love of a chicken. This wee flock of 13 have been a blessing to me. We are topping the 100 degrees the last couple days, once again I'm praying for rain.🎐🎐😁

Amen Sister. You saw mine running around hunting down the 1/2 frozen blueberries. I feel, sure there are rules of thumb of what a chicken needs to survive. But, I believe to thrive, especially in these blisteringly hot summers, is some TLC. I told a friend, if I had a bunch of land that had super dep shade, they would probably be there instead of coming out for frozen blueberries, then again, maybe not. I started my chicks with blueberries once they were 4-6 weeks old. I would cut them in half, fresh berries and let them hunt for them. Such a perfect treat, even for us humans.

We were super hot today--tomorrow to be 99. Then a cool down on Thursday. It is just too hot! Hope the cooler weather stays. We get the flu shot every year and the pandemic one also--my husband was in the first pandemic vaccine study. It was kinda cool to be part of it. I wasn't able to participate because of my thyroid disease--because it is an autoimmune condition and would have possibly affected the study results. They recently contacted him about doing a new pandemic vaccine study for an oral vaccine. He had never done any medical clinnical trials before this, but since it was a part of history, he wanted to do it. Hope you enjoyed your tomatoes! We are trying to savor the last few we are getting. Since the coop and run were totally cleaned out, the big birds are all about hunting down low under the floor of the coop, So the teens are sitting in "Dad's chair" while he is out. LOL 10 minutes later they were out running about the yard. It is starting to be spider web season here, so I think they are finding snacks also. I saw one of the young girls with a cicada in her mouth, it was as big as her head, she ran around flaunting it, and very proud. I almost wanted to rescue it, but I'm too old to chase her when she has a yummy morsel. She has warp speed then. LOL One thing about the chain link, is little spiders love to spin there, and catch little snacks. "I equate the trapped bugs to popcorn chicken, for chickens. LOL 🤣

I haven't tried giving my chickens bread for treats. They will probably like it. We have been trying to get roo boy to not be bossy with my husband so he can tend to them when I am not home. So, we have been going out and letting him give them treats and letting them eat treats out of his hand. One thing my roo loves to do is give his girls treats. It's funny for him to take things out of our hands and toss them to the girls! If bread is a high value treat, maybe roo boy will appreciate it from my husband. It was 101 today--tomorrow supposed to be 100 with a small chance of a pop-up shower. Then we look like we will cool down into the upper 80s for about a week after that. Hope to be able to get out and do some prep for fall planting. It's pretty much time to take a lot of pitiful plants out. My cukes are hanging on. Hoping to make one batch of bread and butter pickles before they croak. It has been a hard summer for me in the garden, too. The heat is hard on us ladies of a certain vintage! Stress doesn't help either. It's ok to have weeds in the garden, though. You are still getting veggies and have lovely flowers in spite of the weeds! We had a huge bird fly low yesterday about dusk. It was so large. Wondering if it was an owl. Starting to worry a little about predators. Our house is in town, but we live near a large area of woods with a river. Lots of wildlife. My dr has chickens and his whole flock of 12 got killed by a racoon recently. He is going to buy some replacements at the fair. I am thinking about buying some, too. He said the 4-H kids raise really friendly chickens and they are all healthy. They auction them at the end of the fair. He said there are kids who don't have family bidding on their chickens and they are the kids he supports. It's either getting some at the fair or raising some chicks this fall. Not sure I have it in me to raise chicks right now. I just need to add a couple for the mental health of my little flock of three. My poor lowest hen is getting bullied too much by her sister wife. It's probably drama related to their husband. Your babies are going to love scratching through the deep litter! I forgot how much they love a good pile of leaves until I let them in the compost. I have been raking it back up for them and adding some food scraps in the mornings. They love it, but I totally need some more leaves. They can really break leaves down fast! We had another baby snake by the back patio this evening. It looked dead, so I was going to get it and toss it over the fence in case it was venomous--didn't want the chickens to eat it and get sick. Silly little thing was just playing dead. When I picked it up with a stick it sprung into action and tried to get away. I still wanted to toss it over the fence in case it was venomous. We caught it in a tupperware container. Once we got it out of the yard, I found it online. It is harmless, but it's defence is to play dead--so funny. The chickens must have scared it before I found it. It is a ring-neck snake. The mother lays 3 to 10 eggs and they hatch in August/September. I have seen 2 so probably will see a few more before summer is over. Sorry for such a long comment! Take care, friend!

@@medtronicmom your heat sounds miserable. Bread isn’t good for water fowl, but chickens love bread, even if stale. Stale croutons, old cornbread as long as it isn’t moldy. You should add a few more hens, especially if you got coop space. And in winter they will love extra snuggle buddies to bunch up with at night. I hope you get your boy tame for hubby. Just takes time, and teaching boundaries. Though some days they will forget the rules. Grass clippings are also great entertainment and snacking fun too. Mine were running mad today, one had a small mouse and of course they all wanted it. I don’t know how she found time to stop and eat it. Hot commodity. I’ve gotta roll their stumps over again soon. A fun little buffet. I hope you cool down soon too. I’m going to try and get motivated to do a wee garden for Fall. Good distraction. Take Care Sweetie!

It is so nice to have flowers blooming throughout the summer. Really just anything growing this late in the season is refreshing. I started a dozen dwarf dahlias from seed and I only have 3 plants left. Two are finally about to bloom. I have been so intent on keeping them alive to see the blooms that I actually dreamed that one bloomed. I have been thinking about those plants too much! In the dream it was yellow. We will see! We lost a cat that way and it is hard. Hopefully he will stay close. You would probably be creeped out here--we have 2 huge spiders with beautiful webs under the eaves of the house. We kinda enjoy watching them. My roo tries to hop up and get the spider in the back yard, but he hasn't figured out how to reach--I am sure he could get him if he used his wings to propel himself--but he would get web all over his feathers. He is silly just hopping up and down trying to get a treat for his girls. I had a baby snake run across my path today--that creeped me out! I don't mind snakes as long as I know what kind they are and I am not worried about stepping on anything venomous. He better be careful. The chickens could make a miserable end for him--they are brutal with little frogs.

I don't mind the spiders and the webs as long as I don't walk through them. We will start getting some big pretty ones soon. every now and them a spider will be hanging from the hawk netting and the chickens are so funny hopping up and down. Last night right at dusk, by young birds, the teens who like to stay out late were chasing lighting bugs. They have gotten so big, I have to look for markings now to pick them out of the group. This morning I heard excessive crowing, I look out my bedroom window to see Laddie staring up at my window just a hollering. I had to go out and give him a snuggle. LOL I feel the same about snakes. Never a big fear, with so many neighbor cats and a cat or two always in my yard I rarely see any. But, yeah.....I felt bad yesterday morning for a newly emerged cicada in little Drago's mouth. He is still too young to want to share with his sisters. LOL

I opened my homemade compost ring yesterday for the chickens to scratch through. It's just last year's fall leaves and veggie scraps. It's like Christmas for them! Helps to pass these scorching hot days. They like hanging out in that area of the yard on hot days because it's shady and I wet it down for them every morning before they get out of their run. Really looking forward to cooler weather. I need to get some fall things started. I enjoy the fall/winter garden the most--no pest pressure and so much more enjoyable temperatures to be outside. My "bush" green beans turned out to be pole beans and they have taken over all their neighbors and it is impossible to harvest anything because it is a snarly ball of vines collapsed on itself. I have a tomato plant that is probably 10 feet tall and they have climbed up and over it. We look like crazy people literally on a ladder picking tomatoes out ot the top of that tomato "tree." Glad Kaos is letting you love on him. I hope he has many good days ahead. Have a good weekend!

Oh Yes! I bet those girls of yours are happy and having the time of their lives in compost ring. I'm fixing to go out and rake their coop/run and I may just pile it in a far corner of chicken yard. It is all so dried out and they love kicking it around so much. I no longer use compost in my garden as I have weed mat down, and I am loathe to deny them their fun. Today it looks dark like rain, but no rain.....so it is a good day to work out in it. I did pole beans one year, and purposely only made 3 little plants, used tree branches to make a 9 ft tee pee around them. I still had to use a step ladder. I'm not a huge pole bean fan, but I love my green beans. I Love Fall gardening for the same reasons.

I really liked that tree, but now I will have less bird poop and spiders on my mower. LOL We are going to cut a couple of the larger limbs , a bit closer to the tops, but with about 4+ feet of trunk, and put it in the chicken yard on the end without hawk netting.. Chickens love, love fallen branches, they hop all over them, make little bunkers under the leaves and branches, and eat lots of bug snacks off of them. I will film them once they get it. It also provides cover for them, and shade.

Oh, no! It makes me sad, too! You can't stop the wind from blowing! Just sorry it got your sunflowers!

Glad you're getting some rain. We are hot and dry here with high humidity. No rain in the forecast. I am so ready for fall! The chickens are staying in the dirt in their shady spots--we call their favorite area their fort. They hang out there more than anywhere else. The teenagers are so cute. It is amazing how fast they grow! Your wildflowers are still looking good. I am enjoying the sunflowers through your channel as none of the ones I planted made it. Although, I do have some dwarf sunflowers coming up in the greenstalk. Maybe I will get some blooms before frost. I planted them in the greenstalk last year and they were cute--I had the seeds left and decided to give them a try. Looks like you will have at least one pumpkin for fall. Hope you get well--you do sound better. Take care!

The last thing you need is pneumonia--glad you went to the doctor before that happened. You have been really sick! I really think you have 3 girls and 1 roo in the teenage group. Laddie is wanting your attention! We have had older animals who lost hearing and were probably half blind. It is hard to watch them age. Hope Kaos gets back to himself. I am glad he is tolerating being inside and is sleepong with Mom. He is as much comfort you you as you are to him. Hope Debby comes your way. She did not grace us with anything. It is a million degrees here. Take care!

@@medtronicmom thanks. Yep, I got 3 girls. I will eventually by next Spring for sure have to re-home 1 Roo if I’m still here. I hope not though. Yeah, I got animals who need me, I cannot afford to be any sicker. We are cloudy from Debby this morning. But no rain yet and it is very hot and humid. Ugh 😩. Take Care and I hope Ya’ll get a reprieve soon. August is brutal. I know my chickens are just as ready for Fall as I am. Hope yours are doing well. Yesterday I stood in front of my coop fan.

I am so thankful Kaos is better! I hope you can get some sleep tonight. Maybe the chemiclals will clear their bodies soon. My roo crowed really young. It was so cute! I know you will be glad to get over that bug. You probably caught it at the hospital. Hope you have a good weekend and get to catch up on your sleep. ❤

I'm going to break down and go to the walk in clinic tomorrow. This crud in my chest is still lingering.
