Excellent video! Thank you! I’ll share this with my high school team.
What brand are Erika’s boats, does anyone know?
what kind of sailing watch does the crew have? and where can I buy one?
Great video! I'll definitely be following more of your videos after seeing this one! Question: What are your vang settings off the start--and for crabbing in particular? I tend to keep the vang off until I'm well & truly underway, as I find I sometimes get stuck in irons (or in reverse) when head-to-wind on the start line (especially when the wind is up)? Will crabbing work the same with vang on/off? Thank you!
Hey Erik, congrats on coaching Erika to a win in the recent Trials. How do you maximize your crabbing time, and how do you know when to stop crabbing? I find that if I crab for more than 3 seconds, I go past head to wind, but you were able to crab for longer, maybe several seconds.
I don't know about all these technicalities but I do know that in a strong wind, sailing downwind in a Laser is terrifying right up until the moment you get tossed over the side to watch your boat sail off into the sunset.
“ sailing the bow underwater is not fast”…. Good tip

hit the mark
Great video! Thanks for showing so many tacks back to back so we can really get the timing of it!
Ty I won my regatta bc of u I’m 11 so it helped a lot
Nice!
These videos are awesome. As someone who just got tossed on a radial in 18 knots and dumped it more than sailed it, the boat handling is incredible. Looking forward to learning more from this series of videos and looking for how you do the little things and maybe work up to ability to enter a race one day
Great video, thanks for sharing!
When he’s crabbing, could Erika just bear off into him and claim a penalty?
please post more of these erik bower content
"let him round first" lmaoooo
Thank you so much I was literally freaking out because my evil coah is making me skipper even though I've never done it before
What an amazing video! Thanks for the tips! I am going to try some of this today!
Hi, why the two tacks after the start?
Nice moves! Is this crabbing technique class legal? Doesn't it break rule 42?
you're allowed to pump sails like he is if you are using the heel to turn. like how he uses the leeward heel to head up, then he flattens the heel
Can't wait to try this
I sail a 29er but I'm gonna try to teach my lil step bro how to sail an optimist
I’m watching this so I’m ready to do a sailing lesson tomorrow
3:25 before 30sec
You touched the mark! Penalty. :)
How to you stop the boat from bearing off or tacking when you do this?
Why I are you raising the board in that sequence? I do it that to clear any potential weeds. But it seems that you have a different goal.
its to allow the boat to slide sideways
@@telimarkskierman yes, seems like he is actually doing that to slide to weather, using the momentum from heading up?
@@perrygrossman2008 yea exactly, trying to open up more space below him to leeward, then you can use that space to get a good slingshot across the line.
This is exactly correct. Pulling the board up while backwinding the sail enables the boat to drift to windward. It takes a lot of practice, because it is really easy to accidentally tack.
@@laserbob You can hear him say he's "crabing"
As someone pointed out rule 21.3 states that a boat moving sideways to windward through backing her sail is the keep clear boat. So one cannot force a windward boat to tack or cross the line by crabbing
How about some MC scow videos. You won nationals guy. Come on!
To anyone watching this video to practice their roll tacking, I strongly advise against going bare foot like the crew is in this video, and to always wear closed toe shoes. There is a lot of force involved in vaulting across the boat during this maneuver, and you will have a very bad time if an individual toe catches all of that weight. I broke my foot this weekend in exactly this way, and am land-bound for a couple of months as a result. Please learn from my mistake!
Muy bien Pilo
Nice i sail in the opti in the channel
👍

Hello, I am looking for a new optimist, any idea where I can get one at a good price?
Sos argentino?
what are you using for a microphone/headset set up? Is it #1 Voice Actived? # 2 Waterproof? #3 can you use 2 of them with another sailor to coach between 2 Lasers?
It's called BB Talk. Yes, you can use between sailors and coaches.
@@lauderdaleyachtclubsailing9517 Many Thanks!
The rules do state that while crabbing you have no right of way over windward boats....
Nice move, definitely going try this. Keep them coming Lauderdale YC, from Ireland.
Erik - thanks for this. What are you using for presumably a cordless (waterproof?) microphone set up? Do you you this unit with a "student" for real-time dialog with your students and coaches?
The headunits are from BbTalkin. They're meant for watersports, so yet they are waterproof. We don't use them during normal practice, but for one-on-one (private coaching) or small group sessions, they are invaluable.
@@laserbobThank you !!
Great Vid!! Keep them coming.
Side by side commentary, mic'd up, LOVE IT!!! Keep doing these but with different sailors each time. This was fantastic!
I am from Ukraine and we don't train this technique. Thank you.
Wow! Thank you very much for teaching this technique! Actually, this morning I was trying to find the strange maneuver to drift up at the start line which I observed some sailer did in the regatta I joined last year. This is it!
Toshinari Takayanagi glad you enjoyed the video! Hope this helps you during your next event.
Once again, another great video, thanks guys!
Thanks Erik, this is really helpful
Epic content. Team LYC on their A-game
Thanks Erik!
Thanks Erika, this was really helpful!
