White Malkin Adventures - Part 39
This episode is the final preparations back in the UK, including a visit back to White Malkin in LaPalma to continue the upgrades and small jobs prior to the sail across the Atlantic to Antigua. Not all upgrades worked regrettably with the Electromax high output alternator being a total failure and waste of time, effort and money. It was also time to say goodbye to my Yacht Club friends back in the UK and to spend an evening celebrating to say a big thank you for their support. A special thanks to my great friend Gully who has been a rock during these past months; thank you Gully.

I have settled in to life at LaPalma marina and removing parts of the engine for repair to take back to the UK. Also fitting additional solar panels and a remote adjuster for the Hydrovane. The island is very nice and the town is vibrant with bars and good restaurants.

After a few days of R&R, it’s time to explore a little of the island. I mentioned the marina gate, which I videoed it being closed; it seems to stop the majority of the Atlantic swell. The yachts in the marina still surge a little so I put the rubber snubbers on all the mooring lines. I went for a hike, which is all uphill; but shows the beauty of the island from an elevated position.

So, I depart Porto Santo for my interim destination LaPalma Canaries. The sail was gentle; a bit too gentle, with very light winds; that is until the last six miles. The wind built vey quickly built, with 35 knots on shore. The entrance to Santa Cruise harbour is tiny and blends with the shore line. Departed Santa Maria for Porto Santo. Gentle sail to an island which has golden sandy beaches and not too much else; a beach holiday destination. The harbour is safe with a very small marina, but no room, also beam on to Katabatic winds. Katabatic winds flow down hill caused by higher density air being drawn to lower density air. Yachts stored onshore are tied down to prevent moving sideways.

Time to depart Santa Maria for Porto Santo. I left my mark with White Malkin 2024 World Adventure daubed on the sea wall along with other sea folk before me. A good sail to Porto Santo with fair winds. Nursing the alternator which had decided to fry itself some weeks before, made battery charging a challenge.

My stay at Santa Maria was interesting. It’s an island where the main town is a hike up to the top of the island. It’s very quiet with few visitors, but nice all the same. The main export is tuna, which they catch in abundance, fishing six days a week 24hrs a day.

Time came to depart Tercieria, bound for Santa Maria, the most easterly Azores island. Ashore for one last look round the quaint back streets that are similar to that of Cornwall. A 100 mile sail from StMiguel to Terceira. Greeting a fellow Marchwood Yacht Club member, Richard North, after his 1400 mile sail from Plymouth to the Azores with the Jester Challenge. An evening with the Jesters and their camaraderie, helping Richard repair his broken rudder.

Land Ho StMiguel. Spotting an Orca which glided under the keel and then passing a whale; both somewhat concerning as they are extremely big beasts. Clearing immigration and reacquainted with the town of Ponta Delgardo.

White Malkin enjoys two days of sailing to windward. I explain about weather routing using the PredictWind the Iridium GoExec. Currents in the Oceans are amaising as there there, but how do you measure it. Fortunately with modern electronics currents are more visible. I hope my explanation of weather and currents are useful.

The voyage to the Azores continues; good progress but with some weather that is more of a challenge. White Malkin sails beautifully as always. Unbeknown, the alternator charging system was beginning to play up, but out of adversity, success will always follow, including drying out my wet shoes and socks from taking a green one over the side.
