bought two of these as well as an octive mandola from them. And, really for the money these are quite good quality. I mean i tried to commission a "western" luthier to make me one of these and your talken 4 digets, and in the mid range at that , i mean wtf it's just a couple of pieces of wood right? So that was a no go and if you tried getting your hand on an original K4 from the 20C teens through early 20s , our looking at anything upword of 8G's and then your really paying for the history right? . As these are no whare neare quality instraments! which is why gibson dropped them from their inventory, they sounded *horrible* particularly on the higher registers, where they sounded like badly hungover sitars. It was the lesser eye poppen and oval k2 that had the tone so . This is the only sensible way you can get hold of one of these until the luthiers in the west get with the new emerging market, and stop trying to rip people the fck off
I played in the baltimore mandolin orchestra and had the opportunity to play two K4s and a K5, one of seven in the world. Gibson knew what they were doing, and they did it well.
I too played the Gibson K5 in the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra. For 20+ years! Fantastic instrument!
I am interested in their Octave Mandolin but they are twice the cost of the Eastman. F style vs A style i get it. Do you enjoy the octave? Would you pay twice money over the Eastman?
@@kelley71 Sorry for the late reply; i havent been getting my utube messages for some reason. The octave is actually better quality instrament than the mandocello and it really really plays nice. The only drawback was they faild to supply a bridge but that was no biggy really . Although i havent played one I would ceartainly go with the eastman as you are guaranteed the craftsmanship and it will certainly have a better resale value when and if you choose to upgrade.

I still enjoy the 'cello but I don't play it that much. But it still sounds great!

No, that is incorrect. It is tuned a fifth lower.
ibnhashim Yes mandocello is octave mandola and that serves as an octave variant of mandola for the cgda tuning, while octave mandolin is what is to the mandolin (gdae tuning). And the irish bouzouki is the largest and longer and tuned gdad.
@@ised-5239 In the UK, a mandolin tuned an octave lower is called an octave mandola, and a mandolin tuned a fifth lower is called a tenor mandola.
Goku Uzumaki Tenor mandola is like a tenor banjo for the tuning.
ibnhashim Maybe not octave mandola but octave-to-mandolin mandola due to gdae tuning. And it might also be acceptable to address octave mandolas to octave mandolins due to the term mandolin literally means 'small mandola' so octave mandolin is 'smaller octave mandola' or 'smaller mandocello'.
Sounds fine. I am a 'cello convert of several years back. I was fortunate to obtain the last of the Webber Gallatin F scroll models. This Pango 'cello sounds like a good investment. Good fortune to you.
