Wolyn 1943 was a tragic event in Polish history, but passing grudges and resentment on through generations, especially young children who had no participation in this massacre, is unhealthy. Canada is a country established on native land, where cultures from all over the globe congregate to live in unity, including the Polish and Ukrainians. Resentments keep our society from thriving!

People have learned to live with the knowledge of some terrible past events. Polonization of Ukrainians in 1930's as well as Volyn. Sorry to bring it up after you received some good advice but there is a great deal to know and understand from many sides.

Explain this to me...what is the reason / rationalization for this "mixed" pol-uk "show"?....which are suppose to be the uk costumes?...is this suppose to be an example of pol-uk friendship, etc?...or are you just bored with just Polish dances, etc? Why not just base your material to the 1600 boundaries of P0lish Llithuania ? that will give you plenty of other regional dances..

Great question! The purpose of this performace and coordination with the local Ukrainian dance group Vykrutas was to establish valuable connections, explore other cultural regions, and to challenge our dancers with new choreography. This is a common theme Polanie practices; once in a while we will put together choreographies from different cultures such as latin dance, Romanian, bollywood-style dance, and classic American and European dances through the ages (waltz, charleston, swing, etc.). We were so lucky and more than happy to be welcomed with open arms to this Ukrainian community and to showcase our own POLISH national dances, as well as perform a traditional Ukrainian dance with Vykrutas called Pan Hospodar, otherwise translated to Pan Gospodarz, or in english, Kind Host. It was a beautiful representation of the cooperation between our two nations in Canada and both dancers and parents had an amazing time! Since you also show concern regarding the costumes, the horizontally striped ones are Ukrainian, while the vertically striped costumes are a mix of Polish costumes (Dress: Opoczno, Flower head piece: Lublin, Vest: Goralski). Since Polanie is a Polish dance ensemble, we don't have access to authentic Ukrainian costumes, so we did our best to immitate them! I'm happy you couldn't tell which dancers were authentically Ukrainian, because it means we did a great job performing the choreography!

What an incredibly ignorant and embarassing question. I hope you're able to use your time more effectively in educating yourself and broadening your horizons rather than lash out needlessly at folk dance groups. Do better.
