    So, 4 years later, are you still using this setup? We're 5.5 years into a new house we built and I had a 250 gallon tank set and we aren't big users with just a gas oven and gas insert fireplace. I had 100 gallons put in back in Oct 2021 and still have a decent amount left unless the gauge isn't working right. They charge $150/year rent since I'm a low volume user so, when this tank lowers more, I'm going to change over to the twin 40 pounders like you have done. What brand tanks did you go with? Did you ever get your usage figured out? Thanks in advance for any info and a great video.

    Thanks Demonic for the video. I have question regarding the transfer from inverter/battery power to generator once generators have started. Is this a no-break/seamless synchronisation transfer such that the output load does not see a 20ms or less break in power?

    • @DemonicAnimatronic
      @DemonicAnimatronic Місяць тому

      The transfer switches in the inverters are sub 18ms transfer time. However when I’m using generators to feed the inverter/battery system, I am using Victron’s power assist function which actually synchronizes the inverter with the generator so they are both running together. So 0ms transfer time because there is no transfer.

    Looking to add an outside tank to supply LP to a new range and was wondering if after conversion kit installed on range (orifices) and a built in regulator on the range is an external regulator actually necessary at the tank? I haven't hooked anything up yet would like some feedback. I don't believe I will need the capacity you have here as we will not be running all burners ever. Any help. Thanks. M

    This was a very vice presentation. I have a couple question. 1) 1) the scrubbers you mentioned - do they return power to the monitored device once the total load drops? 2) in the off grid scenario mentioned will the generator accept a signal from the solar inverter when it senses the battery SOC is a a low trip point? I've been propane for 14 years at my present house and a 500 gal take will only be filled to 80% to allow for expansion and that cost has averaged around $1.68 for the past years. For the amount you mentioned it could be filled at least twice.

    So does that big generac have an inverter in it as well? Or is it supplying 'dirty' power. I didnt quite get that part.

    • @DemonicAnimatronic
      @DemonicAnimatronic 4 місяці тому

      @@Lillelj no, but the generator head is generally of a better quality with better windings and the engine/generator has enough size/mass that it is significantly cleaner than the smaller portable ones. They are still not usually as clean as a good quality inverter generator but they are usually very close to tolerance vs some cheaper portable units that can have major voltage/hz fluctuations and THD in the %20 range.

    I've installed and used both a Touch 50 and 70. My T50 had issues with a 30' passive cable. Of all things the colors used in the display were wrong or washed out looking. Otherwise okay. I switched to a Monoprice active cable and everything worked perfectly. I also installed a T70 starting with another Monoprice active cable which I believe is exactly the same as the first one. Unfortunately, sometimes when I touch the T70 to wake the screen up it starts but quickly goes black. No response after that. I can unplug & replug the HDMI cable and it wakes up and returns to normal operation. I've not yet solved this issue. (And yes, the source is the Cerbo and the display is at the T70.) Any thoughts for a next attempt at a fix?

  • @cornpop7805
    @cornpop7805 4 місяці тому

    I believe he's incorrect about going too big on the regulator. Just because you have the capacity doesn't mean you'll use it. One of the pitfalls of using propane is that outside temperature and percentage of fill drastically affect the max BTU output of the tanks. For instance, the 100 pound tank I considered, was capable of 280,000 BYUs at 60⁰F ambient temperature, and with full tanks. However, the same tank han a max output of 28,000 BTUs at 0⁰F and when the tank is 20% full. So, you really need to look up the chart for your tank BTUs vs temperature and fill. It is technically called vaporization rate, but I found more good resources by using common language.

    • @DemonicAnimatronic
      @DemonicAnimatronic 4 місяці тому

      Nope, not incorrect. And not specific to propane, any regulator needs to be sized according to use. For a simple explanation see www.beswick.com/resources/the-basics-of-pressure-regulators/#:~:text=A%20regulator%20with%20an%20oversized,and%20may%20cause%20excessive%20droop. As was stated in the video. The bigger the acting orifice the more flow for a given movement percentage. In general large regulators aren’t precise and small regulators don’t flow. Have to have balance. And yes, the temperature is important as stated in the video. That’s what I mentioned in regards to vaporization tables. Horizontal tanks can also vaporize more than vertical if you can get ahold of one of those in the size needed.

    • @cornpop7805
      @cornpop7805 4 місяці тому

      @DemonicAnimatronic The problem of pressure droop, is mitigated when using a two stage or three stage regulator arrangement, which you are using. Otherwise, your home would have to run multiple appliances or only high output devices. Using your logic, a pilot light (which uses significantly less BTUs than your regulator is rated) would be problematic. However, a single pilot would not be problematic, nor would it be for any low output device. The same would be true for a regulator that is even 4 times larger than a closely (you call appropriately sized). You mentioned vaporization rates, but you didn't explain what that meant. I explained the vaporization rates in my comment, in a fairly straightforward way. To be clear, I thought you did a great job in the video. I made one correction and provided some details, which most people don't understand about propane gas.

    So I just install the soft starter and it is wonderful. Everything went well following your video it was up and running in less than an hour. The one glitch I had was putting the capacitor back and closing the panel. Because of the length of the wires and the space I had to install the capacitor up-side-down. Is that ok? Or will the capacitor fail sooner operating in an inverted position? Should I extend the wires with butt connectors and put it in right-side-up? Follow-up: The unit failed after only 2 months. The run wire from the unit fried for a distance of 6 inches. Had to call an AC repair tech. Contacted the company and just thought they would stand by their unit. NOPE - they said splice the wire and hope. The failure was caused by heat. It is Florida in the summer, Duh! The original wires were good in the heat, cycling the AC for 9 years, but their unit failed in 2 months. Anyway, don't trust this company or this unit. They will not support you or their product! BUYER BEWARE!!

    My sister went with one of those LiFePo4 all in one units and they leave it connected to the grid so it stays charged.. They want to get a couple of solar panels but for the pennies it costs in grid power it is on the back burner.. If the power is off for quite a while those panels would come in handy but last time her husband just took it to work and charged it then brought it home to plug into the furnace and TV with extension cords.. Sister just went to the community center and sat there all day instead of the cold house..

  •  4 місяці тому

    When I was looking at solar gear I had this requirement in mind and was going to put in a manual 6 circuit transfer panel but found an inverter that had a generator input and programmable transfer so I went with that.. It can start the generator and automatically disconnect from the grid all by itself.. When the generator is running it will put all unused generator power that is specified into the battery bank and when that is full it will shut off the generator and run on the batteries until they are 1/3 discharged then start the generator and repeat the cycle.. It will also lock out high demand things like the hot water heater until the generator is running or the grid comes back on.. I do need to get the line status alarm running again because twice we didn't even know the grid was down until we got a call from the neighbor because the solar was keeping the batteries full so the generator did not have to kick on.. It is a pair of small relays and a couple of green and red LED lights that are connected to the main disconnect with a couple small power supplies.. I have a small buzzer connected as well and the wife got mad about that because there was no way to silence it.. So I pulled it out to add a switch and never got around to it for close to 2 years now.. This started out as the cheap way to get a heads up if we had a brown out because in the past they had damaged and destroyed many thousands of dollars of appliances and electronics.. Now there are low cost AC good/bad automatic disconnects that you can set with high and low cutoff thresholds.. These should be a requirement for new homes as they would save people money on the electronics and might even prevent overvoltage fires..

    Feel like I need to add some input here. The only time I've seen people or really heard of people having electronics not work with standard generators is when they don't understand when to bond or float the neutral. Most modern electronics now work similar to gfci's. "Lenox furnaces are famous for this" the rectifier in electronics isn't as sensitive to thd as most people think. Itll take almost anything and convert it to dc. Also a standard generator thd is pretty solid well a newer one anyway until you start overloading it or let it run out of gas while you're stuff is plugged in and it sits there surging.

    Hauling these massive tanks around when full (especially) is too much of an encumberance. If your wife cannot do it, or children, or someone else, it's a problem; Or as you get older, or are injured (as is the case in my situation), while I like your "solution", it's only temporary and really not an option for the vast majority of people. That said, it's better than no option at all (until that time arises). Also, who really needs those kinds of pressures to cook? Being able to run at least two burners at a time on medium flame/ heat, I would think should be sufficient for even medium size families (so long as you have electricity). I will definitely agree about Propane companies. However, it's really just basic economics. And many (if not most) of our (American) private Propane Companies, are being bought out (or forced to sell), by parasitic large Energy Hedge Fund scumbag corporations, like "Energy Partners, LP" out of Chicago. Our Fossil Fuels Energy sector is being commoditized by New York, Chicago, and International Investment Firms, to adopt a model like the Cable Companies or Telecommunications sector (among others), with literally no value added, but actually a typical reduction in services and cost increases. One consequence (and goal) of this (other than profits/ dividends/ returns on investment), is the slow destruction and bankrupting of the Middle Class (along with the Recessions and Plandemics). That is precisely what the Global Warming/ Sustainable Development Fraud is all about (as well as the COVID fraud, expect another Plandemic and Recession roughly every decade to 15 years). After my local propane company was bought out by Energy Partners, and my Propane Tank was eventually reposessed as a result (I wasn't buying enough propane due to skunks who dug underneath the house), I am using two butane stoves to cook and that is sufficient I would argue for at least a 3 to 5 person family (though I have to change out the tanks every week, and need dozens on hand for the purpose). Not very asthetically pleasing compared to my stainless 36" 6 burner range they sit on top of, but also much more manageable.

    Generac 24k runs our entire house in winter and summer. It is not dangerous if installed correctly. I do use UPS units on all my computers and routers. The unit works perfectly so far. I will say that adding Micro-Start units to both our AC units helped. The generator doesn't even flinch. 3-ton and 5-ton units. It dropped the 5 ton from 60 amp start to 35amp start. The 3-ton is similar. I highly recommend them for generator installations that will be running AC units.
