    ...quite a lot to think about. Funny story: One day, one or two decades ago, I was on a bridge overlooking a beach, where two attractive young ladies were lying on a beach blanket chatting. Everything struck me as interesting about this scene, so I whipped out my sketchpad and pencil and began hastily capturing what I saw. A few minutes into this, I was observed by said ladies, and by a gentleman who was with them. They all pointed up to where I was standing, and the gentleman came to see me. Although nothing in my sketch was particularly scandalous, I became very protective of it, and a bit fearful of the dreaded knuckle sandwich, so I vacated my perch, sketchbook intact. The rest of my sketches from that trip are of seagulls and fire hydrants. I have since posted that sketch on my IG, with a bit of a ramble about its origins, but I still haven't quite figured out how, or why, to talk about my art-stuff in here, so you've given me quite a lot to think about. Thank you for that!!

    I just watched something so similar to this in my music feed, about how music school conditions people to spend countless hours in the practice room over four years, laboring in solitude, trying to impress their professors, only to be completely rudderless with their fresh music degree at the end of the four years, needing to learn from scratch about the business side, the hustle, the gigging and the live paying audience connection which make up the profession outside of school. The dude laid out an iron clad case, saying you can get way better exposure to the real music world on your own without laying out $200k or more, by picking a mentor to study with, joining a band or starting one, setting up and playing local gigs, and seeing if it's for you. I've been messing around with both music and art since early childhood, and whereas I subjected my music side to a few years of school, I ran the other way whenever anything to do with art classes or art school came up. ...so when I open an art project to start it, I'm listening to silly, playful instincts about what I want to say and how I want to go about saying it. When I open a music project to start it, I let my art guy inform my music guy, and I tune out a lot of what I experienced in my music training, and I focus on what's fun for me. Thank you for reaffirming that my approach to art also has merit, and in some ways, might even be better than formal study would have been.

    Haven’t heard of her but now I will listen to all her songs! I believe something bad happened at her first record company that was terrible like sexual harassment or something in that direction. In EU there is a recent law that make it illegal to take a photo in public of anyone without their consent. It is mainly aimed at stopping malicious posting in social media but I think it could protect anyone from being mistreated. A kind of weird consequence is that if you take a picture of a historical building you have to ask the owner for permission. I wonder if this applies to paintings too? I am thinking of the row between OpenAI and Scarlett Johanssen where they created an avatar with her voice. It was even worse, they asked her for permission and she said no. Then they found a person that could mimic her and used it instead. It boils down to every persons right to their own persona, to everything that are them! What do you think?

    • @jencarmiel
      @jencarmiel Місяць тому

      As always, Europe gets it right 🤣 Also I totally heard about the Scarlett Johansson incident! I don’t understand why people are lacking empathy that way🥲 I love hearing your thoughts thank you for sharing!

    I didn’t go to art school! And I’m grateful I didn’t have those experiences, because I realllly would’ve been discouraged and probably easily manipulated into changing my artistic direction. I did get some art critique experience at the art gallery, I can’t remember if you were ever a part of them. There was one piece I put up, honestly one of my favorites still to this day, that the artists there helped me with the lighting in my painting. And so to me, that’s what I think of. Artists helping to refine my work. I’m sorry you had that experience, but I love to hear about it!!! Forever inspired my you, friend! 🫶🏻

    • @jencarmiel
      @jencarmiel Місяць тому

      Awe!!!! I’m so, so glad your experience with critique was helpful and positive!! It really is all about environment too, and the people involved. I think the academic structure just kinda encourages competition 😅 I love hearing about your experience in too!! Your art is amazing and brings so much joy ♥️

    Art school should teach techniques not enforcing a specific style. My experience is that you need to shun your teacher at one point. You should travel to Europe, France, Italy to find yourself, we all need to get out of our local art world and get a bigger picture.

    • @jencarmiel
      @jencarmiel Місяць тому

      Exactly!!! Techniques >> style. I knew so many people who started art school with a unique style just to be forced outside it for “growth.” How confusing that is to exit art school and have to find your way back again 🥲♥️

    i quit my day job in 2022 to take my art full time & it didnt go as planned either- but im still so glad i did! for me i am still fully self employed and i just hit the two year mark in may but it doesnt look at all like how i thought it would, i got a freelance artist position doing exactly what i used to do at my 9-5 but im paid double, make my own schedule, and im treated so much better. in january i started teaching art as a freelance art teacher at like an after school lessons place and even though the management is incredibly toxic my teacher friends have been some of the best people ive ever met and i wouldve never known how much i love teaching art if i had never tried it. i think im meant to do a lot of different small things like this over short periods of time, because i get bored easily and im finding so much more success than i ever have working a 9-5 even though it looks nothing how i thought it would its still so much better suited to how i operate and i am able to live so much more comfortably. this is such a great video and i appreciate everything you share ❤ this is a journey not a lot of people take and im glad you’re talking about it openly, because perfect success stories of things going exactly as planned are so so rare in this industry but just because things dont go as planned doesnt make them failures!!

    great video! really resonated with me in relation to my attempt at doing art as a career. lots of ups and downs and learning what you really want and what you really need in life. it's been hard sometimes learning that there's no end point but that life's just a constant journey. everything is in flux and growing and changing all the time. it feels overwhelming but also freeing! anyway lol it's been so cool seeing your journey and i'm excited to see where it takes you!! Super interesting perspective! As someone who uses AI regularly, I think it depends on the goal of the AI user (kind of playing to your point!). But I definitely think it'll replace jobs with objective answers (data analysts, for example) more than subjective opinions like creative work. So cool to start a conversation on it, thanks for the video!

    • @jencarmiel
      @jencarmiel 3 місяці тому

      Yes totally! I think if used correctly, Ai can be a tool to free up room for creative professionals to really delve into their strengths and make themselves stand out among the market. But I also totally get how Ai can freak people out too. Either way, it's an important conversation to be had.

    I love art history so much because the more context and the more of a timeline you can piece together the more sense all of these "weird" art movements make and the more I can appreciate and even love artworks that honestly I wouldn't have looked twice at before. And that's not to say they're only good when I understand but with appreciating modern art a common struggle I think is in the middle ground between understanding the work as an important historical work and not understanding why, only being able to see it for some dumb lines and colors (hypothetical opinions lol) and not appreciating the hard work and innovation that it took to get there. Something to me that makes all modern art more magical, even if it doesn't speak to me personally, is understanding that as a movement it stands for creative freedom and the ability to define art as YOU want, not how someone else sees it. Modern art, whether you like the art or not, is incredible because it said that truly anything can be art. And that is revolutionary. (I'm ignoring all the specific movements within the umbrella of modern art that said actually we are making the only valid form of art and looking at it as a shift in mindset as a whole lol)
