The Delegate Experience: Conferences Done Differently with Mary-Louise (ML) Huppatz + Leanne Hughes
Are you ready to rethink how conferences can inspire, connect, and energise people?
In today’s episode of First Time Facilitator, I’m joined by Mary-Louise (ML) Huppatz (or ML for short), CEO of the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM).
If you’ve ever been to a conference that felt stale or overwhelming, you’re going to love hearing how ML redefines the delegate experience.
You’ll learn how to craft conferences that people rave about, how to create moments that matter, and why injecting a bit of fun can spark connection in ways you’ve never imagined.
ML is CEO for the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) - a job that she describes as being the #1 cheerleader for people working in the sector. She is passionate about people with a capital P - and focuses on creating learning experiences which support self mastery and confidence, development of an individual's leadership, and helping people to thrive in their own career journeys.
On a Thursday night you will find her moonlighting as Rakali - a Joey leader at 5th Brunswick Scouts, and loving nurturing the next generation of leaders.

Thanks Leanne and Alan - your ideas are always inspiring and I come away rejuvenated :) Bring on 2025!
Oh, a lovely comment, thanks Rauhena! Excited for your 2025, too :)
Hi there, thanks for sharing! I am interested in starting a facilitation business in Brazil :)
yay! so excited for you. all the best!
A great summary. And gives me big FOMO. Thanks for sharing, Leanne. 🎉
No probs, Fran, thanks so much for watching/listening!
Thanks for your generous reflections and sharing, Leanne. I'd love to know more about the shallow-deep concept. I have been intrigued by it ever since I saw it written on the flipchart in a video and mentioned in some people's posts.
Thanks, Zoe! I'll see if I can work up some more content/depth (haha, the irony) on this for LinkedIn/UA-cam/the podcast.
Lovely! Congratulations, Leanne! <3
thanks so much, Nilyn!
FABULOUS!! A very inspiring event with lots of connection! The two things i hoped to most take away! Thank you!
Thanks, Katrina!
Just found this gem, as I’ve recently become a Behavior Panel fan. This is actually so helpful for those of us in other fields too. As an hospital RN who does a lot of teaching and interacting with patients and their families, I find body language is such an integral part of what I do. I really appreciate learning new things about it. Thank you 🙏🏼 P.S. (I can’t believe Mark’s rosy cheeks were wasted as an Orc and not a Hobbit! ☺️)
@@SuperMBURN oh so happy you found it! Thanks for sharing your insights.
aw I lost it. I was at work.
Oh, we missed you and your questions! Our next broadcast is on 28 August, 4.30pm ET
Great tip re strongest signal in the room! I'm co-presenting in a few weeks and will be sure to use that one!
Yes, I used that "My friend is awesome" tactic this week in Melbourne with Tim! It's so good! Thanks, Sarah
I have the book....but the title and cover design is so cheesy that I can't start reading it.😊
hahah oh, it's worth the read!!
Nahhhhhh your problems are not my problems
Absolutely love this share, thank you! Being generous is always win-win. Appreciate your comment
Great session, Leanne, thank you. Just last week, the lady behind me, asked if I have the cash to pay for coffee. The new shop selling coconut-milk-coffee does not have the credit card setup yet. I finally found my cash among the tons of receipts and offered to pay hers too, because she was thoughtful to me. That made her day, she offered to buy me coffee, now she got a free one instead. ☕

Amazing. I wish to meet him here in Brazil
I'm sure he'd love to visit and host a workshop!
@@LeanneHughes yesterday there was a live with you and him, that was live event or recorded? It was waay too late here in Brazil and I had to sleep early but I would love to watch it again.
Some of my core takeaways are: create original IP, don't write using chat gpt, market innovatively, be unique and different, and create disruption. The S curve was very interesting and jumping before you plato, innovate and only through failing do we grow, that's why we need resilience to bounce forward. High tech and high touch (call before emailing, or do a zoom). You don't learn to ski by reading a book; that's why you need a coach who has done the work and can be on the slopes with you. Be an object of interest. The buyer-seller relationship is peer-to-peer.
Yes, so many great notes + reflections here, Yoke. It's amazing how much ground you can cover in a 40 min interview. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts here.
Aah @leanne have shared this widely and even copied a few quotes of Alan to a few coaching clients around ambiquity. Thank you for this lovely interview!!! And for your wisdom Alan!
Oh, thank you for your lovely message! I'm thrilled it resonates with you, and hope it helps you clients, too.

Great interview. Yu have a new Sub..;-)
thanks, John!
@38.00 Alan Weiss is on point! The economist, Joseph Schumpeter. talks about "Creative Destruction!"
Alan is on point with a LOT :)
Love your idea of using frameworks, and a number to constrain what you say (to at most about 3 points). Another framework that springs to mind for this is PREP, which you've probably come across before: ● Point - make your point succinctly, in (say) just a couple of short sentences ● Reason - say _why_ you came to that point of view ● Example - give a brief example to make your point more concrete ● Point - restate your point to drive it home (and to remind people what it was!)
Thanks for tuning in, Craig! What I love about the PREP framework is actually the last part - summing up what it is you're driving home. I think an element of "getting to the point" is landing that well / not letting your message just fade out.
Very true. Ending strongly makes a huge difference - and it's something I'm always looking to improve. A few years back, I reviewed a short UA-cam video, highlighting its strong points (7 of them), and one was to sum up well. (The other strengths were: ● Story ● Smiling ● Structure ● Sharing insights ● Similes and metaphors ● Steps to follow) If you'd like to see my takeaways from that video, just Google "It's important to sum up at the end of a talk" - _with_ the quotes. It's the only hit 😊 (I'd leave a link, but UA-cam seems to block links in comments... ☹) Anyway, am about to start facilitating F2F tech training, after not having done that for many years. So am enjoying your ideas! @@LeanneHughes
@@RemotePossibilities1thanks so much! enjoy those F2F sessions : )
Thanks@@LeanneHughes! For some reason, that search I mentioned seems only to work intermittently. This one seems to work better - again, when you use the quote marks: "the speaker succinctly recaps his 4 main points"
I love to see him and GarryVee have a discussion about brand and building a business today! What a show it would be.
Oh my goodness, yes! I’d love to host THAT conversation 😂
I think Alan would be doing all the listening. 🤣 We know how Gary is. ❤
@LeanneHughes yea there needs to be more marketing panel discussions. Like World Science Festival for Marketers.
That looks really cool Leanne :)
Thanks, Derek! Yeah, ton of fun.
You should speak more slowly I think. Its very hard for some.of us to make out what u r saying. I think this is a point of improvement.
Yes, that's a great point, and something I need to remind myself of often, especially when speaking with groups!
Hi Leanne, we met when you came to do a presentation at Sun river, you are such amazing speaker. would be an honor to chat with you on my podcast. best!
Hi there, yes, I remember you! That was a tremendous experience in NYC. Thanks for your kind words. Would be delighted to chat with you on your show.
Sticky note: Question: "What do you do? Ans: "I'm a trusted advisor to you."
Hope this helps!
@LeanneHughes I'm adopting this position as my new answer when asked the same question. I'll make it help. Thanks for the interview and for posting it for us to learn from.
Love it. You both have New Guinea connection 💪🏽
thanks for listening! yup, that was a great connection thread :)

Oh thank you, Nicola!! Good on you for finding that new pond.
Jeez, you are contagious. Such a great video. Passion. And “memento mori”, this has been my catchphrase for life.
Fran, thank you so much for watching and posting your response. Momento Mori is such a brilliant phrase to remind us of what's important in life.
