Replacing Rudder Lines In Scorpius XS OC-1 @MsPalominoFilly
Переглядів 117Рік тому
When I broke my rudder line, I was unable to find a video on UA-cam on how to do this with an OC-1, let alone a Scorpius XS, which is even more difficult to access than other OC-1s. Fortunately, Tom Atkins , from New Zealand talked me through it. I decided to make a video, so that others will be able to see how this is done.
Nice Bumps, But Broke My Rudder Cable
Переглядів 43Рік тому
First day this season in the bumps, also first day taking my Hyper Foo Concave paddle in the bumps. I was having a great time and broke my rudder cable just after turning to ride those nice waves. All the boat wanted to do was turn to starboard. I had to drag my port side foot, and paddle on my starboard side only, just to make the boat go somewhat straight. Even at that it was turning slightly...

This might have been my last speedskating session of the season. It was sone of the nicest ice I have seen ORDA produce. Ironically, at the end of the day I received notice from ORDA, that the oval is closed due to bad ice conditions and weather. I guess the March sun took a toll on it later in the day. It also could be the usual ORDA BS , and they just want to close. If it has closed for the s...

    Instead of sowing in a fishing line, another technique would be to simply melt the tips of the old and new lines and fuse them together, end to end - a process called 'butt fusion'. Since rudder lines are either polyethylene ( ex: dyneema ) or nylon ( paracord ), it should work.

    Aloha! You're really courageous: setting off alone (?) in what I presume to be really cold water. Love the disciplinarian. Good stroke too. ...Where did you learn outrigger paddling?

    Very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing! ...Btw, what is the diameter of the cord for the rudder lines? Note: If you ever do break a steering line midway through the tube, one technique I have heard of is to use a steel wire to guide the fishing line through.

      I do not know, but it is a Viking sharpening stone, and I got it from the ShateNow Shop in Salt Lake City. SkateNow being one word. It was a brick and mortar shop, but is all on line now. Erik or Kimberly Kraan , owners of the shop could give you the detailed specs on that . www.skatenow.us

    so just flat with a edge not hollow?

    • @MsPalominoFilly
      @MsPalominoFilly 5 місяців тому

      Yes, Nordic skates and speed skates are sharpened flat, no hollow. The right angle edge on each side is the edge. A hollow would make these skates drag. Skate in these, then put on a pair a figure skates, or hockey skates and it feels like there is a break dragging. They are flat as opposed to having a hollow down the center of the blade. However, they should not be sharpened flat, as in taking the rocker out of the blade’s profile. The rocker is what allows you to turn.

      I use a Foss two sided stone with course on one side and fine on the other. That is what I use on my speed skates . I bought it from the Skate Now Shop in Salt Lake City. They do mail order. I also have a Zanstra stone you can buy pretty much anywhere you buy your Nordic skates. That also is two sided.

    Thanks, Diana! Great idea about using a pipe to align the blades on a nordic skate jig. I found it difficult to tighten my nordic skate jig sufficiently so that the blades didn't fall out. My solution was to replace the tightening bolts by ones with a hex head. I can then use a drill to tighten. Much easier!

    Thank you for sharing, I have just tried sharpening my Nordic skate for the first time since I purchased them about 20 years ago. How much sharpening should I do to produce any burre? How many back and forth run with the sharpening stone? My blades are very dull . Thank you for helping. I did not use my Nordic skates that often through the years but I kept them in a very good condition. They are very handy this season as travelling is not allowed anymore. I have a nice skating pond not far from home so I use my Nordic skates very often these days.

    • @MsPalominoFilly
      @MsPalominoFilly 3 роки тому

      Marc Thibodeau, there are no number of strokes. Because I keep mine sharp all the time, 15 minutes does the trick. Twenty years is a long time! Yikes! That could take a while. You know you have done enough, when a bur develops on all four edges. Do a little each day, for a while. I have sharpened other peoples’ as Jared that have been let go a while, and it is a chore. But it is also very doable. A little every day .

    That was my first Greyhound”Gunner”, who has now passed 😥 He wore boots in real cold weather, and he didn’t like them. I would carry them with me, and if his feet got cold, I would warm his feet in my hands and then put the boots on. He would sulk when I put them on.

    This is so great! I have a 4-year-old greyhound girl with a lot of energy...she loves going on long hikes with me, wondering how she's do skijoring...I've never seen a greyhound do this before :) How much training/prep did your hound need before hooking him up?

    • @MsPalominoFilly
      @MsPalominoFilly 9 років тому

      +Jen Goeppinger When walking him I use Gee for turning right, and Haw, for turning left, and whoa, when we stop. I say these every time we make a turn. When walking him, I try to walk behind him. A Greyhound isn't a good worker, they like to run, but not pull. I skate on my skis, and he runs ahead of me,keeping a bit of tension on the line, but the instant i try to get lazy, and have him pull, he will stop. We run short bursts, and I do let him stop a lot. Most sled dogs are not allowed to stop, even to go to the bathroom. They have to do it on the run. Not Gunner. When he feels like stopping we stop. Now he is ten, and we really go his pace, which is a lot of stopping to sniff, or to just walk a while.

    • @jeng3108
      @jeng3108 9 років тому

      Yes, I definitely get the no working/pulling aspect of having a greyhound :) I think she would enjoy it because she has so much energy, and I can see us just kind of going fast/slow/fast at her pace. What about boots? Does he ever need them if you go on longer runs? Thanks for the insight on training, I appreciate it! Have a great winter!

    Thanks Kev. I actually can't ski as well with poles. Speed skater here. Hate poles! I do have coats which go over his harness, but when he starts to pant, it comes off, and I tie it around you waist. I carry boots as well. This stuff goes on the dog and comes off as needed. What type of dogs are you using ?

  • @OxfordDogs
    @OxfordDogs 10 років тому

    Looking good. Thanks for sharing! We usually suggest people go with a set of longer poles, for when your dog starts to slow down there, you can help him out more, but you are a great skier! We also suggest that people put the coat over top of the harness. You might have luck looking for a hound harness, to fit that narrow and deep chest!

    I have a Greyhound,and he used to race. People have an issue with that as well. I say, let these dogs do the task they were breed to do. They love it. My dog enjoyed running after the fake rabbit. I've seen his race videos. It's some of the living conditions that are the real issue, and the fate of the dogs after racing. Same with dog sledding. many owners do a great job of caring for their dogs. These dogs love what they do, and 30 of them live in this man's home,comfortably on couches and all.

  • @simile34

    I belong to the Alaska Hound Group Association up here, and they do fun runs and competition. I don't get to run Chloe as often as I'd like because the group is based out of Anchorage/Wasilla and that's 350 miles south. We do make it down there for the fun runs a couple times a year, and there'll be competitive coursing up here in Fairbanks at the end of the month, so we'll do that. Also, a friend bought coursing equipment last year, so now we're just trying to find a place to use it.
