I just want to remind people of something: This is not America's first go-around in European racing. That happened quite regularly in the 1950s and 1960s. And in point of fact, Ford won several European races at the same time in the 1960s as they were beating GM at the dragstrip with Mustang. The biggest upset was, I believe, in 1967, when Ford, using 3 Ford GT40s, beat the entire field 1-2-3 in the Paris-to-Le Mans road race. And this was in addition to Mustangs also placing well in its class in European road racing during the same era, when everybody used a 4-speed manual, and Ford developed the first 5-speed manual transmission. Point is, if you think NASCAR is done with Euro road racing, you've got another thing coming. Give NASCAR 5 years, and a rulebook to go over, and I guarantee you that NASCAR would field a competitive entry into Euro road racing. Even here, if the gearbox hadn't blown up, that Camaro would have probably placed in the top 10, maybe top 5, against the other similar cars. A 4-minute lap time is nothing to sneeze at.
