Welcome to Memories by Wayne, a place to showcase my memories to the world!
Memories by Wayne started on Instagram in 2015 as a place to share nature related photos. In July of 2016 the official Memories by Wayne UA-cam channel was born!
Most of my videos are travel and nature related, because, well I love to travel and explore nature! I'm always finding new and interesting places to explore and discover in the greater Chicagoland area. I do a lot of day trips, traveling around southeast Wisconsin, northeast Illinois, northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.
This channel is pretty random. You will also find some retro arcade gaming content, retail exploration, family vlogs, even random food reviews! Whatever interesting is going on in my life, whatever memory I want to share, you will find it here!
Please subscribe! I also still somewhat regularly post nature related photos on Facebook and Instagram. Please like and follow there as well. Thank you for the support! :-)

Walking the Prairie Trail at Sterne's Woods & Fen, Crystal Lake
What a disaster. I remember this road being free for many years. Feel bad for the people the live and work in the area and surrounding communities. Still can't get to 90 from EOE in 2024! Wonder what it did for property values in the area....
@geepeezee5030 I remember riding the EOE opening week 1994. Visiting someone in Elgin. I wasn't even old enough to drive yet. But my awesome adventurer Mom took me on it. This has been a weird project for sure. I too thought we would have had a lot more progress on this 490 expansion to 90 and 294 by now. Navigating Thorndale without the toll now is very tricky!
@@memoriesbywayne Way too many stop lights now on Thorndale. I've generally avoided the area since EOE became a toll road. It's ironic, WI has roads in much better shape yet no tolls.
@geepeezee5030 I never understood tolling the EOE. I think it's more related to their western entrance to O'Hare plan. When you look at some of these final projects. 90 looks great. 88 looks great. I see some value in toll roads. And it's still much cheaper than the turnpikes out east. I don't know. I grew up throwing 40 cents in baskets. They've just always been a part of my life. 😆
i live by the hipmall
@OzzaShoman awesome! I'm going to be back very soon. After the announcement that just came in that a Toys R Us is opening up there!
This was the mall that we all meant when anyone said we were "going to the mall" in my teen years. It was one of several malls I would visit from time to time (others being the tiny St. Charles Mall, the large Stratford Square Mall, and the larger Woodfield Mall), but it was Spring Hill that was "the" mall. Even though I moved away and have not been to Spring Hill for about 30 years, I did check in on it a few times to see how it was doing amid the mall closures that have been taking place across the country. While the St. Charles Mall closed a while ago, the other three listed above managed to soldier on... until this year, when Spring Hill Mall and Stratford Square bit the dust, within a month of one another. Malls were such a big thing once. They offered many kinds of goods in one place, certainly, but that was never the only appeal of the mall. They were also a place for younger people to hang out, to meet friends, to be social. Internet sales can't match the experience of being able to try out clothes from many sources and see how they actually look on your body before making the decision to buy or not. There is still something special about being able to see a product and hold it in your hands before purchase, which is presumably why the non-grocery section of a Wal-Mart is full of customers at any given moment. I think the real thing that killed the mall is not that in-person shopping has gone out of style. It's that hanging out, meeting friends, and being social have gone out of style for younger people.
Thank you for the wonderful and thoughtful comment! I couldn't agree with your sentiment any better. As a youngster, Charlestowne in St. Charles was the mall I was often going to. I did Stratford, HIP, and Brickyard as well. But most often Charlestowne. St. Charles also has a smaller mall off Randall but I don't remember that one well. I wish I had visited Spring Hill many years earlier. But sadly I never got to experience it in its peak. But at least I got to document it as I had. Unlike Charlestowne.
@@memoriesbywayne The smaller mall off of Randall was the St. Charles Mall. Through the '80s, I lived in between there and Spring Hill Mall, and my parents really liked Montgomery Ward's (which had a location on the St. Charles Mall grounds, but not connected to the mall itself), so we ended up heading south to St. Charles Mall quite a lot. Any time we needed a "real" mall, it was Spring Hill or one of the other big ones. Spring Hill at its peak was a phenomenon! The whole center of the mall had planters with large live tropical trees growing inside the mall, with places to sit and relax all around there, giving it a nice, relaxed shade-tree ambience. It was as big as Charlestowne or Stratford Square in square footage, but on only one floor (except for the anchor stores). All the other large malls had multiple levels. I never saw Charlestowne. It opened right after I moved out of the state, and all the times I happened to go to a mall when I was back in town visiting were at Spring Hill. Once Charlestowne opened, the tiny St. Charles Mall didn't stand a chance, and it closed a few years after Charlestowne opened. And now Charlestowne is gone too! Montgomery Ward's, Sears, K-Mart, Radio Shack, Toys R Us, Borders Books, CompUSA, Circuit City, Zayre, Venture, Kay-Bee, Waldenbooks, B. Dalton, Fry's Electronics, and probably a bunch more I left out are all gone or nearly gone now, right along with the malls that used to house some of them.
@tid418 thanks for the history on the smaller St. Charles Mall. My older cousins that lived out that way would remember it better than me. But it was well into the dead mall phase if it hadn't closed by the time we were all meeting up at Charlestowne. Which was to me the mecca of big malls. Stratford, too. But we went to Charlestowne more. I can imagine Spring Hill being an epic mall. It was still beautiful on closing day. I've only found one retro video of Spring Hill. Linked at the playlist on the bottom of my channel homepage. 🙂
I just wanna say thank you for visiting our mall in Greendale here, our community and I respect 🫡 that you came all the way to our small city to visit our southridge mall
Thank you for the kind comments! That means a lot. Greendale seemed like a pretty hustle and bustle city to me. If you haven't found it yet, I have a newer visit up on the channel now. ua-cam.com/video/5Th0d8PE8UY/v-deo.html You have a very wonderful mall. Although I recently visited (video not released yet) Mayfair. And I'm honestly quite torn which I like more lol.
I love kwik trip.
Very popular up in Wisconsin. If Buc-ees ever gets approved up here, may shake things up a bit. 😆 Time will tell.
Hope the bathroom was clean 😅😅
Not as clean as "Buc-ees". But they do a good job. Thank you! 😃
Yeah! Mukbang time 😂 but with tacos 🌮
"Mini" tacos. 😆 🌮
One of my favorite places, an antique mall!
This is a hidden gem for sure. You would never expect this place to be as huge as it is. 😃
🌮🌮🌮🥔🥔🥔
Good quick meal! 🙂
@MissSothePeacefulObserver wasn't really my best filming work. But only having a short amount of time, also filling up at Woodman's (this was a random last minute stop) and my head feeling like a stuffy cloud right now 😆 I'll take it. I almost just walked out till I saw tacos cause the tacos only thing seemed appetizing. Also probably related to this head cold.
I learned to type on an Apple IIc in highschool but my mom had an old fashioned typewriter. Very cool. I kind of miss it. They have a lot of cool items there. I also wonder how they keep places like that dust free, heh. Thank you for sharing, Wayne fam.
This is a really nice place. And a lot bigger than you'd think from the outside. Apple IIe was a lot of my first computing experiences in the library of my grade school. Most of my best time in school.
Congratulations
@@Mariaceliavlogs thank you! 🙂
Maybe I'll head up there in spring time😊
@scottr5775 sounds good! Let me know. I'll treat you to some Plum Garden! 🙂
I love Quiznos. Too bad their business plan in the 2000's was for corporate to screw their franchisees.😳 Hopefully they have resolved that little issue, because not even the new sub shops toast their sandwhiches and have as good bread and fixings. And the last one I went to restored the free pickles & banana peppers!
@charlesgallagher8450 as far as treating the franchises, is Subway, McD any better? Totally agree, though. Since filming, I've researched their history. Mine was toasted at least. Seemed clean and stocked. It's honestly a horrific intersection to be located on. So to be located there for so long got to mean something. Maybe the owner will let me interview him/her someday. That would be a video! 😆
I loved Quiznos. I'm not sure why they closed so many. They were better then any of them.
@flocosta has definitely always been one of my favorites. Wish they had more. If you're near Barrington you should stop at this one. 😉
We had never seen one of these turn arounds. Thanks, Wayne
@BruceEllmaker Metra has the ability to drive from either end. What confused me is how quickly it reversed. So they either had 2 engineers on board or they can just "reverse" and conductor can guide them. Seen that before too.
Great Catch, Wayne! Just incredible with all of the lights and sounds!
I'd have to look at schedule, but I believe this was the first Saturday inbound train. 🙂
We knew it from the nineties to about 2010. Exciting place to visit, especially in the wintertime. Time and circumstances change things, but Thanks for the look back. And, that sentiment certainly applies to your Oasis series.
@BruceEllmaker it's definitely changing. But at least unlike Spring Hill and Stratford, they are keeping some parts of the indoor mall open during the "mixed-use" development.
I had no idea Quiznos still existed. Do you remember Potbelly Subs? I used to love them too. There was one by the Lincolnshire theater I used to go to when it was still there. But it closed years ago.
Potbelly is probably among my favorite sub places. Not quite as rare as Quiznos thankfully. You can still find one in Crystal Lake. I used to have one across the street from my work in Chicago. That was amazing! And I actually featured a Potbelly... in a mall... in a video that should be coming out pretty soon. Just finished editing it actually! Stay tuned! 🙂
It’s not the same anymore :(
@belapathak2065 mine was still pretty good. But I'm not a picky guy either. 😆
Priceless gems
A rare gem indeed. And we're lucky to have 2 in Lake County! 🙂
@@memoriesbywayne There are NO Quiznos left in Northern Virginia, the closest one is in Oxon Hill MD which is 45 miles from my house.. There was one that opened up in Manassas, VA probably 15 years ago, I don't think it lasted very long and I only went there once after they first opened, let's just say they should have waited until they knew what they were doing before opening....there was also one in Herndon, VA near where I worked back about the same time, the lady accused me of lying to her about what kind of sub I'd ordered. Conclusion is that their overall operation was somewhat marginal across the board. The food was good, though, when they did it right....
@brianleeper5737 they did "toasted" right before toasted was really a thing. It's a rare sight. Still, it's really weird the two we have here so close to each other. Then the one in Chicago. Then, similar to you, I have to go quite a way. Like Bloomington, IL, or something for the next one.
@@memoriesbywayne I had heard that their franchise fees / royalties were high and the owners were barely making ends meet. I had also heard that the franchises were required to buy supplies from Quizno's "preferred" sources, at a higher cost than normal market rates. It sounds like Quizno's corporate had a pretty abusive relationship with their franchisees, which lead to the demise of most of them. You invest what, half a million bucks into a Quizno's franchise and then it bleeds you dry? Maybe things have changed but if I was inclined to invest in a franchise...Quizno's would *not* be it.
Thanks for getting my Erie Lackawanna, "Lake Cities" on video just as you said, "I'm liking this room the Best, I think!" I had just returned to running trains at the Great Midwest Train Show since the March 2020 Show - The last show before "Covid". Didn't get "everything" going until noon this day and you captured all my track laying in the isle. I'm only happy I got my things out of the way as I saw you videoing! Thanks for coming to the Great Midwest Train Show! Sincerely, Nathan from Chicago
You had a great display! You may be one of the first to recognize me or find my channel later after spotting me lol. It was a great show. Not sure when I'll be back yet. Won't say it will be an one and done here for me. This video did really well in views. I'm just more interested in the train displays as opposed to the vendor stuff. Why I really enjoyed that show I went to in Milwaukee. I heard Madison has a pretty cool show as well. Keep me updated on any future shows you plan to attend. You can send me an email through the link on my Linktree and it's also displayed on the home page of the channel as well. Would be happy to feature your work here better. I absolutely love getting immersed into the miniature world of miniature railroad. 🙂
Omg it’s such an early 90s vibe especially with Gin Blossoms playing in the background. The only thing missing g is a clear Pepsi.
@infjintegrityvsnarcissism7295 everything in there screamed '90s. It was amazing! 🙂
I used to go to Water Tower Place all the time as a teenager. I loved their glass elevators lol. I think that's the first time I ever saw elevators like that, so they amazed me at the time. I love the surrounding area this place is in too. New Town and Old Town are my favorite places to visit in Chicago.
@@flocosta mall glass elevators are the best. Getting harder and harder to find. I definitely have a lot more of Chicago to explore in that area. 🙂
Wow, even in the middle of the city, the malls are slowing down. Maybe it picks up over the holidays. Never been inside Water Tower but very cool layout. Glad you guys had a fun day.
@MissSothePeacefulObserver probably a mix of factors. It was midday on like a Tuesday. Generally less high-end spending in this economy. And while it is slowly returning. Commuters into the city has not returned to what it was pre-pandemic. As someone who was very familiar with how difficult it was to get a parking spot at Arlington Park past 7:30 AM. It's more of a tourist thing than anything now. So many easier ways to get these items out in the burbs, and probably more affordable.
What a Great Dad! 🙂
@BruceEllmaker I'm good for money at least. 😆
@@memoriesbywayne So Much More, Wayne!
Where did this trip start from? I walked through Golf Mill yesterday. With so few tenants I can't believe the operator even has money to keep the doors open and lights on. I live 2 miles away.
You may have saw me there lol. I was there sometime that morning. I don't know exactly when they are closing. Just that the property is being redeveloped in 2025. I started this live stream on 120 in McHenry. 🙂
Very nice video Wayne! My parents and I have stopped at this Kwik Trip, and it’s really nice. They have a lot of stuff in there. I even saw rotisserie chickens in the store too
Thank you for watching. I've stopped by a few times since and it has been a nice experience. Generally my Kwik Trip experiences have been good and they seem to be well stocked. 🙂
Thanks for posting!
Thank you for watching! I've been enjoying doing these driving live streams. 🙂
Thanks for the story. It's interesting hearing how other channels got started.
@@flocosta I have always enjoyed hearing those origin stories. Even smaller channels like mine. Everyone has a reason they are doing what they do. Wish more channels told their story. 🙂
Appreciate the additional info on the origin story. Very good points on the "mixed use" development. It's too bad we can't do towns the way they were done in the Old West, with all the shops and stores on the same walkable street, with small but decent apts on top of all the businesses. I know some older towns have that type of layout, but they tend to be in older towns thst are dying. We didn't plan out our larger citiies very well. Enjoyed the "rant", man. 😁👍
@MissSothePeacefulObserver so I didn't put you asleep with my story? 😆 That's good. We all need a good rant once and awhile. Most of the old buildings in downtown McHenry business districts that I vlog have apartments on top of them. Not sure how nice they are. While we still need a walkable grocery store. I still think these make more sense the newer developments.
Value city furniture was the store on north end that was next to Burlington( former kohls)
Yep. Thanks. I did remember from NorthCdogg22's video shortly after I walked through. Or I think I saw it on the map later lol.
Unless they moved the boundaries, Harlem Avenue and Irving Park Rd. are in Chicago, not Norridge! I grew up at Harlem and Touhy...Chicago!
@@cindydean2371 I know there is an interesting storied past with Norridge and Harwood Heights. The boundary lines are crazy. But everything north of Forest Preserve Drive (including HIP and Rolling Stones) is definitely Norridge. And has been since I was a kid. Look it up on Google Maps.
What happen to them
@Skyhitter22 I don't know exactly why they closed yet. I know there is a big proposed merger between Albertsons, Kroger, and Piggly Wiggly. But I don't know if it is related to that. Unfortunately I haven't had time to research it much yet.
"The Sears...?" Dude, that's just like saying "The Jewels" You must live in Cicero.
@garyaufmann7739 Well, I didn't grow up far from Cicero. 😆
I saw the original Rocky the theater here on a first date. Her name was Adrianne. What are the odds? Yo Adrianne! worked for the music company who ran the music dept at Sears. Moonlighted at Club international clothing store here.
@mack2192 awesome. Been enjoying learning the history of this mall. 🙂
Thanks to Milton i finally had time to watch this one🌀 I miss those country drives in Illinois and Wisconsin. Thanks!
@timt13 I've definitely had a comment or two saying how they "miss" or "would like to see" the Wisconsin countryside. I've seen others like Carpetbagger do some live streams on the road. Not many, though. And I think this is something that is unique and fits in well with the channel. So expect more! 🙂
Thanks for keeping me entertained while im stuck in a hotel because of Milton 🌀
@timt13 good luck. Hope everything goes well. Stay safe and dry. Glad I can entertain you. Plenty in the archives to keep you busy for months. 🙂
@@memoriesbywayne thanks! I've rewatched several😝
@timt13 thanks! 🫶
Everything looks so nice over there. Looks like a great place to raise kids and call home. I've never really gone to McHenry. Maybe I've driven through it, but that's about it. Its nice to see the town through your videos. I love summer. I hate to see it end.
@flocosta Well, good news, summer is just getting started in the Memories by Wayne universe! Many more fests, parades, and summer activities to come. For quite a while too since our fall is basically summer here lol. One advantage to having such a huge backlog. McHenry is one of those ideal exurban cities you're probably not going to unless you are passing through or have a reason to be here. Which is a shame. If you're going to that farm and have time, McHenry not far. You would enjoy the Riverwalk. And if you're looking for somewhere uniquely McHenry to eat, I have to recommend Happy Jack's. The food is great. Ice cream amazing. But it's the themed decor that is the star attraction. And growing up in the same time period as my Mom, I think you would especially appreciate it. And it's very pleasing content for a vlog with its uniqueness and touristy appeal. Want to meet up there or want me to show you around town, let me know. The kids NEVER turn down a trip to Happy Jack's lol.
