Was living here part time for about 10 years, now for 17 years full time. Even though prices have gone up, it's very affordable to live here, depending on where you live and how you live. Been to Panama and Nicaragua many times, although cheaper would never consider living in either one, and last time I was I was in David, Panama, right before the plandemic, a lot of things had gone up about 20 to 30%. And where I am, the climate is great, never too hot and never cold.

This place is dead now! I was there in early 2024 and my buddy and I were the only people staying there. No girls at all. Went to Jaco and when we came back 3 days later the doors were locked and taped off. The Del Rey is done.

Lived there for over a year. COSTA RICA IS way over-rated and definitely overpriced. American prices (and sometimes even higher) for hotels, food, gas, drinks etc... and it is all much lower quality. Retail items like clothing and electronics are way more expensive that in the USA. Lodging has many non-functioning items, uncomfortable beds, food is generally boring at restaurants, taxis expensive, and customer service everywhere is non existent and they actually don't really care. I'd prefer Nicaragua or Panama in Central America. Actually, I should have lived in Brazil for my year abroad. Big mistake on my part.

...definately a SCAM. It's so cheap because you aren't actually renting a car - you are reserving a car that must be paid for when you pick it up. We were charged €142.44 online (€92.63 for the car and €49.81 for insurance) in Italy. There was no suggestion that we’d be paying other charges - the online receipt we received specifically says “Pay $0.00 at pick-up.” When we arrived at the airport rental counter, we were asked to pay another €295.79 - which included both rental and insurance (again!). They count on the fact that you have very few other options when you are standing there at the counter - and you've already paid the DiscoverCar fee. DON'T FALL FOR IT! Go with a real rental car company - you'll pay more but you won't be charged twice.

I have stayed at the Sportsmen's Lodge approximately 25 times since August of 2005. Bar food is a cut above American restaurant fare. The working girls, many of whom have become good friends over the years are not at all aggressive and most (in my experience) are honest. They are all verified adults. I have never met a victim of either trafficking nor pimping. The mhousekeepers have in fact, very little English. Bartenders are a bit better, and the front desk staff is pitch- perfect. My favorite rooms: 1. "El Mono" and "El Puma" in the Mansion wing. Roughly $200.00/night including taxes. 2. "Amante" and "Las Palmas" in the "Modern" section. Holiday Inn level rooms, super clean, good bathrooms, no view. Big windows, but no pretty vista. About $1420.00/night including taxes. Great ventilation. 3. It's noisy, but the space and value of the Presidential Suite near the hotel's entrance is hard to beat. For a truly inexpensive room with better privace and less noise, check out the "Clubhouse" section on the north side of the hotel. Tiny rooms but super clean and comfortable. Centro San Jose is not pretty, although there are fun things to do and see downtown. Bolivar Park, once a zoo is just behind the Sportsmen's, and wild peacocks, colorful tropical birds and (it is reported) monkeys live in the park. One of C.R.'s best hospitals, Calderon Guardia is less than 400 meters from the hotel's front gate. Service is top notch here. I ask guests to remember that you're in a hotel, not a frat house. And don't listen to so- called "expert" advice regarding tipping. The employees of the hotel work very hard to make our visits fun and comfortable and should be tipped, 10% service charge added to every bar/restaurant check notwithstanding.
