Hey it's my Uncle Jeff! Also for those wondering, yes his life is insane, I hear some of the most insane stuff whenever I visit.

One of my favorite places in NYC to visit after work on Thursday nights for open mic, Music Inn and the artist community around it are healers. Jeff is very humble and I wish him a long life, this place healed me with music at a time I was going through some challenges with personal wellbeing and emotional distress.

Music Inn is the kind of shop that I used to love browsing through as a young man.....and they are disappearing. I would urge my younger counterparts to not lose these, and support them any way that you can! "You don't know what you got till it's gone!"

I am so grateful that this film exists. I visited Jane and Billy at Katinka over the course of the many years I lived in NYC. They are warm, welcoming, wonderful , people. The store feels like “ a world in a small room,” to borrow the title of a book of photographs by Irving Penn. I always walked away feeling enriched -by information and insight into an object that fascinated me, by an interesting travel anecdote, by a kind, unhurried , pleasant exchange in the midst of a frenzied city. Katinka has a special time signature, its own time zone, its own special vibe. Among my many purchases from Katinka, I treasure most a scarf Jane dyed while she was in India in September 2001, unable to return to the USA as planned because of the tragic events that month. I will never forget her talking to me about the experience of making beauty, of making art to quell grief and anxiety while she awaited the opportunity to return home. I think about that conversation when I find the presence of mind to pick up a needle and thread to make my own medicine. I am so sorry the store is closing, but I am certain that Jane and Billy will continue to make WOW from whatever comes next. I am so glad that I lived there during Katinka’s existence and that I had the repeated pleasure of crossing the threshold of 303 E. Ninth Street and being welcomed into a universe of calm, kindness, and sensory delight.

It’s sad that our American culture is losing this elegant hardworking insightful skilled generation of people. That there is “no business “ left in a bespoke tailor is very sad.

$12,000 ÷ 120 hours = $100 an hour for elite level artisan craftsmanship that takes many years to master. Subtract from that $100, the cost of materials, equipment, rent, staff, tax, advertising, and utilities. The people who have $12,000 to drop on a suit are the 1% of the 1%. Your comment tells me that you’re not his target market.

I miss the days when both men and women dressed I finer clothing regularly. My mother was a master tailor, she made me some nice things, and I learned that love of textiles and fashion from her. I still have silks and linens from the 1980’s but I don’t get to wear them much. I still have my mother’s 2 sewing machines and surger, and also the great dresses and baptismal outfit she made my daughter when she was so little. 🪡🧵
