It is ancient, middle ages tradition of chasing evil spirits away. "Zvončari" (Bellers) went from village to village over hills and forests on rough terrain to chase away the winter and everything bad that happened during the past year away. People would wait for them with food and drinks and they would make a "kolo" (circle) to trap the "Krampus" (The Devil) inside it and chase him away with noise. They would make a strawman to blame everything on and they would burn him, which is another tradition called "Pust". The tradition stayed here for centuries, as here as well as other parts of Europe, because it was believed that loud noise chases evil spirits away. Halubje Bellers accept only people from their village to become the Bellers and the masks are passed on from generation to generation. If the wearer has no sons, he is buried with his mask. Each mask is handmade from real animal parts, bones and fur and is unique to the family that wears it. Each year during the end of carnival procession in Rijeka (which is today incidentally, 11.02.2024.) they are always the last group and they close the carnival. The tradition is preserved as the cultural heritage of the world by Unesco.

Porijeklo seže još iz pretkršćanskog doba, kad su naši preci bili pogani(inače pogrdan naziv ispravno je rodnovjerci) a štovali su mnoga božanstva poput nebeskog gromovnika Peruna i njegovog suprotnika Velesa, stočjeg boga. Koledari/poklade/maškare su ostaci mitskih obreda koje su naši preci vršili u čast već spomenutim božanstvima a kojima se izvorna svrha kroz stoljeća nakon pokrštavanja, izgubila te su ona pretvorena u " narodne običaje." Ovdje specifično, koledari su povezani uz Velesa, Boga podzemlja, voda, šume i ono najbitnije, stoke (otuda i maske, one su nekadašnji ostaci Velesova kulta, a sami koledari predstavljaju duše mrtvih koje iz njegovog podzemnog svijeta dolaze u svijet ljudi. Maskare, Fasnik, Poklad, Mesopust = toliko je različitih načina na koje Hrvati slave pred korizmu, ovisno o regiji. Ovi Zvončari dolaze iz Istre.

@@Imperiusism Upravo sam dovršio seminar o njima i mogu ti reći da sam običaj vuče korijene iz stare Grčke i kulta boga Dioniza. Širio se zatim u Rim, a Kelti su isto imali slične običaje. Kada je Rimsko Carstvo osvojilo Keltske krajeve, pomiješali su se utjecaji i stvorio jedinstven običaj. Dolazak kršćanstva nije promjenio ništa, iako Crkva nije gledala blagonaklono na te običaje (postoji razlog zbog čega ih je tolerirala). Običaj nije nestao u srednjem vijeku i nastavio se do danas. Zbog toga je uvršten na popis UNESCOVE kulturne baštine
