COMING SOON: On this channel, you may be treated to a whole variety of things. My most recent addition was an Escape Room that I put together for a family cruise. Pretty proud of that, even though there was hardly any wppdworking involved. I think I' m a decent woodworker, and I've done everything from furniture repairs to rescuing flood damaged furniture to making a slant-front desk. I also write books. Many people know me by my UNDERCURRENT series of Sci-Fi/Adventure books following Phelan Maxwell and the Undercurrent as they try to get by in the underwater city of Aquataine in the 2130s. You can look them up for yourself on Amazon by searching for me... Michael Crowl. And then, you might someday soon see videos of my 64 Ford Fairlane, which has been marinating at the muscle car shop awaiting instructions (and money). I'll be doing some work on that myself, eventually.
Just Some Simple Shelves for a Secretary Cabinet
Sometimes, we end up fixing broken furniture, or re-gluing a drawer, or maybe even refinishing a piece. And then, sometimes, we just need a few new pieces for a piece of furniture... like misplaced shelves. It's a simple thing, really. I chose to use a piece of rough cherry, about 9 inches wide, planed down from just over an inch to around 5/8 inch thick. Cut to size, a nice edge on the front, some fine General Finishes products, and a good coat of wax... good as new. The secretary cabinet has shelves once again.

Customizing Picture Frame Moldings from Home Depot
Переглядів 173Місяць тому
We recently bought some photos on canvas from Shutterfly (as you do), and when shopping for frames, probably had the same reaction as most woodworkers I can make them myself! And so I did. First of all, finding matching frames in odd sizes can be a challenge. Then, if you do... OMG! You need a homeequity loan to buy them. So, the "hardwood moldings" section of the Depot, where all the rest of t...
Bathroom Cabinet with Cherry on Top
Переглядів 95Місяць тому
We have an awkward space behind the door to our toilet. We need a cabinet to store a little bit of stuff, and this cabinet is a good way to make use of that little triangular space behind the door. The carcass is made of MDF (Because it paints well), with a Pine door frame with an MDF panel, and a Cherry top. It's might not be a beginner project, but it's not super-challenging either. You proba...
Teak Bathroom Stool

I sure am glad this is done! Lots of curves and angles, and you'd better pay attention to which leg is for which corner! But tha's half the fun, right? Now that it's done, I love it. It gives me a great place to sit down and put my socks on without risking a face-plant into the bathtub.
Cherry Boxes with Zebrawood Lids
Переглядів 4634 місяці тому
I've made quite a few wooden boxes, but these are my favorites! The cherry wood with walnut accents have a nice contrast, but the zebrawood lids bring it all together. And, these have acrylic handles made out of pen turning blanks. That's an idea that I'm going to use again. I got my inspiration for these boxes from the Sawdust and Splinters UA-cam channel (www.youtube.com/@UCHi9GIXZ5RGfSV6RdFF...
Build this A-10 THUNDERBOLT out of Wood!
Переглядів 1,4 тис.4 місяці тому
I guess I like making toy airplanes. I've done a biplane and a Curtiss WARHAWK, and they were fun... and based on plans. But THIS time, I went in a different direction and decided to wing it (ahem) and build an A-10 THUNDERBOLT (or WARTHOG, if you prefer). This sucker was a challenge in so many ways. Getting the shape and proportions right (or right enough) was the first hurdle. Figuring out ho...
Escape the Symphony!

When Royal Caribbean won't offer their Escape the Rubicon escape room to your group of 11 (Because they limit to 10), and won't allow your 9 and 11-year-old grandkids to join in (even though we'd have the whole room!), then there is only one option... Escape the Symphony! Bumbling supervillain, Clarence Rhymebottom (aka, "The Rhymer") has taken over the Symphony of the Seas! He has stolen the w...
Making Window Screens
Переглядів 2227 місяців тому
These screens are made from the kits and components available at Home Depot and many other places. We all either have screens that need repair or replacement, or we will soon. This video shows the very basics. The kits are straightforward, but sometimes seeing somebody else fumble through something is reassuring for those who have never done it before. #diy #diyprojects
Using Tiny Magnets to Keep the Lid on My Heart-Shaped Lidded Box
Переглядів 4798 місяців тому
This is not the most complex video you could watch today, but if you make these boxes, then this might be just the thing for you. I've seen people use a small dowel or screw to fix the lid to the box so it swivels, and I've seen hinges awkwardly mounted to the back. I don't like these methods, so I went for little magnets. They won't absolutely secure the lid, but it sticks it down just enough ...
SHOP PROJECT: Finishing Cabinet
Переглядів 2159 місяців тому
I am not a neat person. There, I've said it. But even as disorganized as I might be, there comes a point when I just HAVE to make my life simpler, stop fighting clumsy cabinets, and just make my work easier. This project was made with the cutoffs from another project, mostly out of 1/2" MDF, some 1/8" hardboard (I have way more of this stuff than I need), and some small scraps of 1/4" MDF. Noth...
Curtiss P-40 WARHAWK
Переглядів 76610 місяців тому
It's another airplane project, and a little bit more reduction in the ol' scrap pile. This started with a couple of pieces of chunky old pine that a friend gave me that he got from his father. I decided to use half of one to make this Curtiss P-40 WARHAWK, a WWII-era fighter. I'm also looking at an A-10 Thunderbolt, maybe a Fokker Tri-plane, and I dunno... something else. There was a plan in an...
Fixing the Wheels on a Suitcase
Переглядів 17411 місяців тому
Ever get your suitcase back at the airport, only to find the wheels are bent and the suitcase won't stand up anymore? Well, that happened to this little green case. Luckily, the wheels themselves though made of cheap plastic survived. Wood at the bottom of the case had been broken, so NOW it needs a woodworker! That's where I come in, and this is fixed and ready to serve a lon... well, maybe le...

Two Door Display Cabinet in MDF and Walnut #diy #woodworking #cabinet #shopsmith #mdf
Переглядів 1 тис.Рік тому
This is not a super difficult project, but it does take some patience, a bit of time-consuming attention to a few details, and definitely a "measure twice, cut once," mentality. You may have seen "MDF" in the title and wanted to breeze right by, but don't be so hasty! I chose MDF for this project because it would be painted, and MDF is perfect for painted projects. It takes the paint extremely ...

How do I fix the wobble in the speed dial when I turn it to change the rpm?
I don't know the answer for sure... I would check the flat spring beneath the dial. But for better information on this, I will direct you to Jacob Anderson's (@jacobvb10 or @Jacob A) videos. He is a VERY experienced Shopsmith rebuilder, and his videos are a great resource. ua-cam.com/video/w4oaJCKKT3E/v-deo.html
Can you share the pdf
Here is almost the exact plan that I was able to find on the web: woodarchivist.com/2625-wooden-airplane-plans/ I always tweak a little here and there, so you should feel free to do the same. The plans should get you close, and then it's all up to you.
Take off your quill handle or you will bend it....
@@steveolsen4874 Good advice! Thank you.
nice work
Thank you!
Funniest thing, I kept watching and thinking I have seen rhat plane before. Got up and went out to the shed as I have a couple of toy making books. Sure enough it was on the cover of one of the books. Not looled at them fir years Cheers Steve great video
Thanks for the comments, Steve. Yeah, you can find plans in a few books, but I always change a few things. The wings are different on mine. I added the scallops at the back and canted the top wing a bit forward, just cause I think it looks better that way. Thanks again! Mike
@@MikeDoingMikeThings yes I noticed that, a very nice version cheers Steve
Hi! We are a group of students from Argentina working on a fictional project where we manufacture wooden toys. Could I get in touch with you through some means to ask a few questions about the production process? Thank you!
Hals Wood Shop new subscriber the 510 is a great machine. please get a manual and check the maintenance. mine is over 25 years old an very few problems...sorry about yours but you fixed and learned alot. The company has free support just call and get listed as an owner, not a problem even if many before you. Check out..My Growth Rings, Jim Sevilla, RedTruck Woodshop, they use the Shopsmith many advise and tips. I do any oil and clean about 3 times a year as needed. and thats in the heat of an Arizona Shed shop. Thanks
....I'm done.
😂That's what I was feelin!
This is your tupperware cabinet! Very awesome
I might not be the neatest person, but I like to be organized. Out of chaos, order!
Great video. Great music. Love your freehand process.
Thanks so much for the positive comment! I've also done a video for a P40 WARHAWK, and will likely attempt an A-10 soon. All the best, Mike.
Hey man - I really like that little box... That is REALLY nice.... So small, cute... Looks good... Good deal... I dig it.... Band saw is next thing to purchase on my list.... It opens the door for SOOOOOOO much more... Happy building bud!!!
PREACHER, I appreciate those comments. This particular box started as blocks of otherwise useless wood, and I just wanted to do something with them. This is what happens... Bandsaw boxes are fun to make, and the designs are endless. The bandsaw is incredibly useful. Get one, make some boxes. Have fun! -- Mike
Nice video! thank's for sharing!
I love the plane but I have a question. Why did you make us suffer through watching you sand every piece of excess off the parts but you didn't show the actual cutting and sawing and drilling with near as much insistance??? You even said that drilling for the axel and wheels was an "ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE" but... again you didn't show that part... but you showed us when you sanded the simulated cylinder heads; every grueling one of them. Asking for a friend.
Sorry about that. Videos aren't one of my strengths, and sometimes it's hard to film the nit-picky things. Those wheels... I would have had to bleep most of it. I appreciate the comments, and I'll use that to make the next one better.
I look fwd to your next video.
Toys are good and fun to make. Which book did you refer to in the video ? Cheers from the UK 🙏
Great hearing from you! The book I have is probably 40 years old, and got me started on wooden toys. It is by Norm Marshall. I always tweak the plans a bit nowadays. On this biplane, I added the scallops to the winds and shaped them a bit more, and I canted the top wing forward just a bit. Otherwise, it is basically the plane in this book. If you like this one, I also did a P-40 WARHAWK. I'm making for an A-10 Thunderbolt, and then... maybe a SPITFIRE. Cheers! Mike
The great book of Wooden toys Norman Marshall and Bill Jones. AMERICAN WOODWORKER. Fox Chapel publishing 2010. Cheers Steve NZ

I recognized the opening song immediately. Great choice and great looking box. Subscribed
Haha! Cool.. Thanks for subscribing, Brian. I'll try not to disappoint. Upcoming projects... a few more heart boxes, a couple of toy planes (P-40 and an A-10), and probably a few cutting boards. Enjoy!

Where are you located? I need a child’s rocking chair from 1983 fixed
I'm sorry, but I'm not doing repairs outside of family and friends right now. This is my hobby, not a business.
Hi. What a nice job i love it❤ How Can i get the plan of this
I had plans that I copied out of a book many years ago, and have been working from a couple of patterns. But, they started with the plans that are the same as these (www.pinterest.com/pin/1127940669165375290/) that I found online. I always change things up a little... and you should too, based on your own style. I cut indents into the trailing edges of the wings, and I staggered the top wing forward a little bit, but otherwise... it's the same as these plans. Best advice, just have fun!
Nice job!
Thank you, Scott. I also enjoy your channel!
It will definitely light up . Would love to see it finished
I hope so! The rest of the cabinet will be painted, but the top attracts all the attention. :)
These look great! So very cleva
Cleva is what I was going for. Thank you, ValenKarr!
Excellent!!! It looks great! I wish I could have the parts that you had and assemble it like you did, because I just don’t have woodworking skills or tools. I think that you were correct to paint the Nutcracker before you put it together. I think that’s the way that the Germans do it. And of course they have the best nutcrackers. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching your video. It gave me sone ideas! I might try to buy an unfinished nutcracker and take it apart myself. If I am Lucky I can try to do what you did then! Ha ha, wish me luck with that one! Anyway, merry Christmas!
I'd definitely try to paint it before assembly. You can probably get an assembled kit, and I'd try to gently get it apart. It makes a neater job. I used the little bottles of acrylic craft paint that they sell almost everywhere, and the top coated with Krylon "Crystal Clear" Acrylic Gloss spray. Let your imagination run wild, good luck, and have FUN!
Goed banget 🎉❤
Terima kasih banyak!
Thank you for getting back to me. I purchased a DIY wood nutcracker & am trying to paint it. It is glued together & is hard to get in all the nooks & crannies without messing it up. I would rather paint the pieces, then put it together. Good luck with all your projects.
Would you consider making & selling a “kit” with all the cut wood parts? I don’t have the tools ( or knowledge) to cut parts out of wood. Thank you,Gina
Gina, right now time is the challenge for me! I am considering an Etsy store for some of the smaller projects, and a "Nutcraker Kit" would be a cool thing to offer, but I'm afraid I am quite backed up with other projects at the moment. I have seen "paint-your-own" kits at Michael's (Craft Store) and Hobby Lobby around Christmas time, however.
Hi Michael, beautiful boxes! A couple of notes- When a part of the process fails, it helps us not do the same thing if you show what happened, and the recovery/correction. It may just be me, but I prefer it when I don’t have to wear hearing protection while watching videos. It would be a more pleasant experience if you reduce the volume on those clips. 😏 The pie crust table was amazing!
Dian, thanks! On the video, ClipChamp gave me issues on that video for some reason, specifically the volume. Sorry about that. There were a few things that went wrong. If I could post a photo here, I'd explain... maybe I'll do a quick vid? Anyway, without over-complicating things... the pattern was very thin, so I was being extra cautious (not a bad thing). I was using a push block to hold the piece down at the router table (with the pattern bit riding inside the heart), and I think I must have grazed the opposite side of the spinning bit, it caught the work piece, and tore it into a bunch of pieces. In the end, I'm glad I wasn't gripping the piece with my bare hands. 😮 Stick with me... I'll get this video process sorted out. Thanks! Mike
What a beauty off a biplane, i have made a few wooden toys and also a wooden chopper bike that can be ridden. Hoping you don't mind me making your shared blog. The universal machine is awesome, what is the make, i wouldn't mind one off those setups even though its old school. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the nice comments! I like to make furniture, but the toys let you be a bit more creative, I think. I have a Shopsmith Mark V that I bought in 1984. It's an awesome machine for a small shop and a budget to match.

Great video keep up the work🤝
Thank you!
Hi. How does it cost if I want one for my son? Nice job !
Hello Cyrille! Thank you for the nice compliment. I have quite a few projects underway, and I'm not really set up to sell these, although I would consider putting one on Etsy (maybe you are familiar with the site?) at some point. I'd have to figure out shipping and all that sort of thing, so I haven't pursued this yet. And of course shipping to France is a whole different challenge. If I do, however, my price would be $75 + shipping. They would either be made of Cherry or Walnut.
Good price for the work put into this.
Nice build! How about gluing a rare earth magnet to the bottom of your LED light, and hang it from the side of your band saw to keep it out of the way?
Thanks Larry! I may mount it on the side of the bandsaw, but the bandsaw case is aluminum and plastic, so no magnets here. Maybe 3M strip or something? This is an oddly useful light that I literally paid $1.00 for. I might have to pick up another, but of course, they are $1.25 now... :)
Nicely done, my friend!
Thank you! With some cherry lumber I got from a friend. :)
Good work brother
Thank you, Tom. I appreciate the note!
"I won't film that cause it's noisy" - immediately films it- 😂
Coming together.
Nice work!
