International Jazz Day - The Way You Look Tonight
The United States Army Japan Band in collaboration with Japan Ground Self Defense Force's Central Band present "The Way You Look Tonight." Composed by Jerome Kern in 1936, this jazz standard was arranged by USARJ Band's SGT Robert Harrison (guitar) in honor of International Jazz Day. Special thanks goes out to Kaku Masaaki (flugelhorn), Hirozane Yasufumi (trombone), and Nakama Ayami (percussion) for working with our jazz combo on this performance. We hope you enjoy!

A Song For Japan by Steven Verhelst 10 years ago today Japan experienced the most powerful earthquake in the nation's history. In response The United States military launched Operation Tomodachi which mobilized 24,500 service members at its peak including members of the USARJ Band at the time. The purpose was to help our host nation Japan recover in the Tohoku region from the earthquake along w...

The best recording I've heard of this! Fantastic work!!
Thank you so much. The USARJ Band is still performing this in Japan, and we just had a concert where the bass trombonist in this video played it as a tenor solo with full band in Ofunato, a city destroyed by the tsunami in 2011. We're so glad you enjoyed this.
I'm just now seeing this comment a year on, but thank you for the kind words. This was easily the most rewarding project I've been able to work on in my time in the military. I'd give a kidney to have these three gentlemen with me at every duty station!
Awesome!

Japan is such a beautiful and wonderful country I will stand to defend japan with my life
My father served with the 293rd Army Band in Tokyo back in the early 1950s. That's where he met and married my mother. He would tell me about concerts given in the Ernie Pyle theatre and how he loved doing it. I have a CD of Johnny Watson and the Kampai Kings (members of the 293rd) with my father playing and singing on it. It's been 9 months since he passed but hearing his voice in the mix still makes my daughters cry. I use one of their songs "Moshi Moshi" as a ringtone. This trombone piece is a beautiful composition and skilfully performed. Thank you Sergeants.
This kind of collaborative project is what we need more of! Great sound! 良いね!
You guys sound absolutely fantastic. Amazing arrangement and playing! Keep em’ coming...HUAH!

Thanks. Anytime that I hear "Song for Japan", I listen for the longest time to the other UA-cam suggestions for the same. I hope you all can find trombone players willing to perform it with you after your military career.
