I grew up in Kansas by where Gary went to school and have seen him many times at tournaments. The course KU plays at in college is called Alvamar, there are two courses. The private and public. On the public there is a hole, number 8, it is a par 5 512 yards, not that far for a par 5. It is a dog leg left and if you wanted to you could go at the green, it is 368 to the center of the green, about 30 or 40 yards uphill. In college he drove the green a time or two and would take this line everytime. Because of this they put up in course OB to prevent it. This guys hits it further than a lot of people, maybe not always with the normal swing but he has a gear that only one or two others on tour have.

just because it says 8 on the blade doesnt mean its the same loft as everybody elses 8 iron...

a good strike from the tee with an eight iron by a pro will easily go 180/185yds. Plus 10% for Gary Woodland. Hence 200 yards is very plausible. It doesn't matter if it was a 7i or 8i it was still and excellent execution and beautiful ball flight. What we should actually be discussing is the fact that Woodland is very wide and long, very contrary to opinion and compresses the ball very well. Only if we were able to watch golf without commentators.

it it so funny to be a college golfer and look at you hackers comments on here. do you not realize that distance is rational?? i hit an 8 iron 170 and i am a long hitter. he can probably hit it 185. add downwind thats 200 and it rolled 23 yards. fuckin damn it. he hit a shot 185 and you are all sucking him off from behind.

The long drive guys might be able to but Woodland maxes out about 195 ball speed with his standard driver and Nicolas Colsaerts is slightly longer than him.

It's possible you can deloft an 8 iron to about 5 at impact which gary woodland does . It is an 8 iron guys! It's not 5 iron it's not 4 iron it's 8 iron! The ones tht deny this fact is an idiot really . GW has alot of strength and he can deloft any club just by his lag and strength Jesus if u don't know just shut up

8 iron 225 yards is pretty average for a Tour level player though, especially when he flights the ball low like that. I have a buddy who played on the web.com tour (when it was still the Nationwide) and when he hits low shots like this, his can hit his 9 iron 225, 7 iron 250. Granted, he doesn't usually do this, but we played a few rounds on a windy day at Kiawah and he was hitting 7 iron stingers 230+ on the longer par 4s.

has the flight of a 4/5 iron. 8 iron with 5 iron loft so whatever.

just watched him play at Congressional, it looks even further in person, he hit a hard pitching wedge 170, it was insane.

if you watch pro palyers live then you´ll understand how high they actually hit the ball, that could never have been an 8 iron unless he has deloft it to a 5...

If anything, Tour players lofts are weaker than the clubs you buy off the shelf. Guys like Woodland (and about 90% of the rest) hit the ball so solidly and de-loft the club so consistently, they can hit those short irons such crazy lengths. TaylorMade sells me a 7 iron with a hot face and the loft of a 5 1/2 iron. I go out and hit it 165 and think I'm, well, Gary Woodland.

they dont make up bullshit yardages....this hole is straight downwind and he only had to fly it 195-200, so in reality its a 180 yard shot...A pretty comfortable 8 iron for Gary..

It carried about 190 - near 200 by the looks of it, 190 carry with an 8 is not that far out of range for any decent length pro.. So I agree with you on that.

just remember that the yardage ıs also from the back of the tee. It could have been playıng 40 yards shorter.

Lol why are some people like "It was clearly downwind" "his 8 iron probably has a 7 iron loft" "he got lucky" this is Gary Freakin' Woodland. He can get 200+ mph ball speed with his driver. Most pros say he's by far the longest hitter on tour. I have no doubt in my mind that he can hit an 8 iron 223. True this was a lower flight and ran a bit more but still, if anyone on the tour could hit an 8 iron that far, it would be Gary Woodland.

The length of an 8 iron is about the same. I think it was a 7 iron. My ball flight with my 7 is similar to that i hit a lower flight with my irons.

Not mention the caddies give the wrong club number, intentionally. On occasion, you can see the number on the club is different the what the commentator will say. Also, if you check out sholinkt on the PGA tour website, it shows actual yardages. The holes are often playing much shorter than reported. A 280 drive and a 140 iron does not equal 460 yards.

Tiger hits hit irons too far now sometimes, he'll try to hit a sand wedge 120 and hit it 140 now

I doubt that, Phil has strong lofts on his irons too. Tiger hits his irons now further then he ever has because he is compressing the ball better.

The distances guys like Phil, Tiger, Rory, Gary and Bubba hit their irons is unhumanlike. Ive seen Tiger hit 190yard pitching wedges and Phil hit 230 yard 7 irons
