MC5 ~ Live 1970 ~ Wayne State University, Detroit, MI
MC5
B&W video recorded for the Detroit Tube Works TV show from a concert held on July 7th, 1970 at Tartar Field on the Wayne State University Campus in Detroit, MI.
This is a quickie video I put together using three clips from that concert which have been floating around UA-cam. I've never seen, or know where to find the complete concert, but for now here's a mini three song version.
Enjoy!
Stay alive with the MC5 and...
KICK OUT THE JAMS BROTHAS AND SISTAS!!!

I was in bands at this time learning the ways of rock & roll. When MC5 came out they clearly separated themselves from the rest of the pack (Segar, SRC, Savage Grace, Iggy, Nugent, Frost, etc. of Detroit based bands). The main difference was the raw energy and the f-you attitude they had towards anyone trying to compete with them. I remember we learned 2 or 3 of their songs to play as we were just doing copy songs figuring it all out. While we could play most of other bands material spot on, when we tried any of this bands songs, they just didn’t sound the same no matter how hard we tried. Yeah, we could get down the song basics, but to pull it off was another matter. We tried one night playing MC5 songs out for the 1st time, but the crowd wasn’t that into it. We were puzzled cause all the other songs from other bands were going great. From that point on we gave it up cause we decided the ONLY musicians that could play MC5 WAS MC5. We never realized it at the time, but it was a tribute to just how good and under the radar this band was. Just go ask any of the other Detroit famous band members of the time (ie. Segar, Nugent, Iggy) what they thought of the MC5.
This was the world's first punk band
One of the first bands I ever got to see. York rowing club 1972.
天国ロッケンロール・ショーでは演りっぱなしの踊りっぱなしでノンストップ!!🎶暴れてくれてるはずでしょ👍R・I・P

I just happened to stumble upon this video, checking out other bands, my God, had I heard this band earlier in my life, I would certainly have enjoyed seeing and hearing more. These guys rock!! Love it!!

The Rock &Roll Hall of Fame should be in Detroit.

Holy Moly, I’m 70 , heard all the BofB but never heard these guys. Joe Dirt “ Dang” That’s one great thing about life is wonderful surprises keep coming.
Rob Tyner knew how to throttle a mic. Pure Detroit. #DetroitForever
Is that Iggy at 2:24?
Shaggers
think Jack White was inspired much by these guys? - i definitely get that feel...
You struck gold with this find, great work! From the time before rock'n'roll lost the roll.
The Wilko Johnson I knew and loved watched this, and another star was born.
I saw these guys in Chicago in 1970. They stunk so bad I almost quit playing guitar.
Joke is on you then
Very cool video. I was in HS in the early 70's and I don't remember ever seeing Detroit Tube Works TV. Thanks for the post.
Wonderful. 2025=1970. We need radical rock 'n' roll. Sorry, the lives you once knew are history. There is no fun to be had in future America. Just a bunch of creepy weirdos who cowards voted for. Enjoy!
Their grandkids formed a band many years later...At the Drive-In.
maximum rock'n'roll
I worked at the Fillmore East for two years, hearing hundreds of acts. MC5 was easily the worst. Pure noise.
Who is (or was) MC5?
MC4...names of the 5...is one still alive?
WoooooW 💛🦋🎵☮️💙

I WAS 13 YEARS OLD
In July, 1970, I was across the Detroit River, in Windsor, ON, Canada. Saw the MC5, Stooges, Rationals, Brownsville Station all the time. Wow! Right after this day in August 1970 was the Goose Lake Music Festival, Michigan's version of Woodstock. MC5 was there, and Iggy, and Alice Cooper, all the big rock bands of the day, including Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, Jethro Tull, Chicago, Mountain, and so on . . . Wayne Kramer kicks ass on this video! Those were the rockin' days.
Muting the "Mother Fucker"? Lame. No point listening to this preschool edit.
Wonderful vid. Too bad Kick Out the Jams is censored, one word only but still. I’ll never understand, why Americans that are so fixated on the right of free speech (rightfully so) can tolerate censorship or even support it.
Funny they played my catholic high-school in maybe 66 or 67. It was kick out the jams mother superior! The crowd went wild.
Going over every bodies head here, they did not know what to make of this, well most of them anyway.
John Wayne State home of the Tarters sure has changed.....not for the better.
Ha..... Wayne playing in Wayne MI!!
DETROIT! my home town since the 1950s
