Energy Institute | Net Zero: Equipping the Workforce
Recording of a live webinar for Net Zero Week 2024 | Attracting, developing and equipping the diverse future workforce to support the much-needed energy transition is one of the Energy Institute’s key objectives. The ‘Net Zero for Professionals’ training course was developed with that objective in mind. It allows participants to develop a solid understanding of the concept of net zero and also covers arrange of practical elements ranging from calculating a carbon footprint and setting carbon reduction targets to implementation aspects. This webinar will outline the skills required for professionals responsible for driving their organisations and/or clients towards meeting their Net Zero objectives. It will also look into the opportunities and challenges on the road to Net Zero for two international organisations.

I can't think of what to say to give anything to this debate. We (the West) do whatever we want and when it starts to look bad we tell everyone a few years behind us that they cannot do what they want as we've done it, gone too far and so that's the end to it. I want a phone, some stuff etc. but see the need to move to less, better, and more green. But that doesn't seem to be my place to change this. So I suppose what I'm saying is the classic think global, act local but that doesn't really allow for any talking. We just need to do it and also vote for people who would also do it. And Chris Dainty-you need to stop drinking. This is the internet, you're not having a conversation.

Why should they listen to us, I’ll tell you. They satay we need to do extra carbons to catch up, we need to explain-we are all in the same skyscraper and we have discovered it’s letting off carbons. They say,ok, but we have a small fire in that our flat which we won’t stop until we feel the same as you , and so it gets worse.

He always quotes the USA switch to a war economy, but never mentions the fact that it was only possible because there was near universal public consensus for doing it. It was possible because the public by a very large majority saw it as necessary (and moreover, as temporary).. There is no such public consensus for the UK government doing what he wants it to do. If it tried, it would be annihilated at the next election and the most likely replacement would be an extreme "let's get back to normal" party.

Maybe we will get Sizewell C and possibly Wylfa, but by the time they get financing deals untangled, we will be in the era of SMRs. GE Hitachi's BWRX-300 has a COD of 2028. Right now, they are hiring 30 more people at their US HQ and 80 more at their Canadian Operation. The OCC rate is ~£1600/kW, which is well under 50% of Rolls-Royce's £3800/kW, so the UK SMR Consortium needs to keep on its toes. Private financing is in train for the BWRX-300, with its 30 months build-programme - Michal Solowow, a Polish billionaire industrialist is planning to 'buy' one to power his energy-intensive industrial operations in Poland and 'green' his image. Private finance is going into the R-R UK SMR too - and it's easy to see why. A 4 years build programme - the income starts rolling in almost as quickly as it can be expected to come in from wind and solar power plants (WASPPs). The earnings, taking into account all of the other 'significant' costs (O&M; fuel; decommissioning; waste handling 7 storage) will be multiple times greater than those from any of the WASPPs, anywhere in the world. These are the efforts of an amateur octogenarian and my hope is, the NIA, for the sake of the industry and Rolls-Royce in particular, would do this 'properly' (ignoring cost of capital) and get the Rolls-Royce figures on earnings potential in front of green fund and bank managers, not to say industrialists like Lord Bamford and his (hydrogen-loving) son, Jo: bwrx-300-nuclear-uk.blogspot.com/2020/05/fund-managers-with-320-million-to.html bwrx-300-nuclear-uk.blogspot.com/2020/05/fund-managers-with-424-million-to.html bwrx-300-nuclear-uk.blogspot.com/2020/05/invest-90-billion-in-offshore-wind.html bwrx-300-nuclear-uk.blogspot.com/2020/05/fund-managers-with-a173-billion-to.html PS: Unlike nuclear power, zero information is available for costs of waste disposal of WTG FRP blades or solar panels!

We do not need to wait for HTRs to get steam at 800°C to manufacture greenH2 using HTSE plant, according to NuScale. A 77 MWe/250 MWt Nuscale Power Module (NPM), a PWR small modular reactor (SMR), uses just 2.5% of its [rated] electricity to raise the steam temperature: newsroom.nuscalepower.com/press-releases/news-details/2020/NuScale-Power-Releases-Updated-Evaluation-for-77-MWe-Module-Clean-Hydrogen-Production/default.aspx Production rates go up by to 27 kg/MWh, compared to 18 kg/MWh for low temperature electrolysis. Whether or not investment in a LWR power plant + HTSE plant could make a profit from greenH2 at the current $1.5 to $2.0 per kg of hydrogen is a mute point. However, what was not taken up by experts was the fact that existing NPPs, Sizewell B in particular, could be combined with conventional electrolyser plant to manufacture greenH2 and utilise the [almost] instantaneous load-following characteristic of electrolyser plant, to great benefit to the operator and to the future of nuclear power in the UK. Please, NIA, talk to investors among your members to get this investigated. To the best of my knowledge, investors in this plant-combo would end up with 4 revenue streams: Grid electricity; greenH2 sales; load-following service; frequency management service. Apparently electrolyser plants suffer no technological 'ill-effects' from rapid load switching and it is predicted that electrolyser plant will see rapid decreases in OCC, with the demand from the EU and elsewhere very strong. The impact it would have for the nuclear power industry is to take out 1.2 GW of GHG-emitting CCGT capacity. Most importantly, it would show how every MW of new nuclear installed can immediately take up the load-following function, allowing NG-powered plant to be retired far earlier than the CCC or anyone else ever imagined.
