Welcome to 'Modern Spectrum Gaming', home of 'The Elite Scout.'
This is my channel dedicated to the world of modern PC games that I have grown to, and hope to, love. It is predominantly focused on Elite Dangerous, but there may well be surprises along the way.
Every week you'll find a report from The Elite Scout, talking about the world of Elite, the community, the in-game storylines, and notes on real world developments. You'll also find ship builds, adventures, challenges... and the livestreams are coming!
Expect play throughs, hints and tips, tutorials, and whatever else seems to work after I get a bit more experience on 'The 'Tube'. The channel is a spin-off from my 'Retro Spectrum' gaming channel where I look back at classic games from the dawn of home computing... www.retrospectrumgaming.com will take you there.
Thanks for watching!

Now that Thargoids have invaded Sol, what happens next in the world of Elite Dangerous?

The Elite Scout: Frontier Developments' Biggest Challenge In 2025
Переглядів 2,3 тис.День тому
The Cobra Mk 5 is going to be a small ship, after all. That's something I'm personally happy about, but Frontier Developments should never have taken that long to correct the record. 2024 has seen Elite Dangerous feel more alive and vibrant than in previous years. FDev's change in how it talks to the broader community is part of that, and while there are bouquets for these initiatives, if the t...
The Elite Scout: Why Is Elite Dangerous Grindy?
Переглядів 58514 днів тому
"I'm all about that grind, 'bout that grind, no shortcuts." There's no point asking if Elite Dangerous is grindy. Frankly, every modern game has some grind to it. Better questions would be why is Elite Dangerous grindy, and why do so many people criticize this grind while ignoring it in other games? From the very first moment you left Lave station, you hit the grind of learning to dock. Launch,...
The Elite Scout: My Problem With The Cobra Mk V

With the Python mk 2, Type-8 Forklift, and Mandalay, Frontier Developments can rightly call the Early Access Program a success with one ship still to be released in 2024. That ship has been announced as the Cobra mk V, and that has upset me. Why are we getting four medium ships, and the final ship is stomping all over the legend of one of the greatest small ships in the Elite world? Frontier De...

Everyone loves the new Mandalay, and every Content Creator knows that the community is thirsty for a main course of Mandalay with a dash of Power Play guidance on the side. This isn't that livestream, but it is the final jump at the end of a long day with another three...

The Elite Scout: Elite's Loot Boxes

With Elite Dangerous needing to make money, why did Frontier Developments not decide to follow the industry trend and adopt loot boxes for credits, merits, ARX, engineering materials, and new super-modules? This is a hot take and I’m here for it! They’re forcing us to take steps away from the bubble lol
We're here to feed your need for hot (but considered) takes. Welcome!
I'm thinking Babylon 5 - A Call to Arms. Or, do an Expanse and throw the Titan at Earth in its death throes...
The earthstrike is a plausible route as well (and with a no-atmosphere gaming engine, we're never going to get close up so the coding isn't a huge resource cost!)
Babylon 5 poisoned Earth, well, The Excalibur offshoot anyway. Maybe that will ahppen, a race to find a cure or collect bits to make one.
The caustic cloud left behind in a Titan explosion is ... worrying ...
At 13,500ly South of Sol not sure i can do anything
Oh there are ways, you'd need to sprint back and sell exp data. A fast 'jumper' ship could do that in 2-4 hours depending where you are. Happy to help of you need tips to get back quickly and safely.
@modernspectrumgaming I might. Haven't started playing again yet but I'm in a Beluga with 55ly in spleich odj c9 something. I landed on a fleet carrier back in May 2021. Same CMDR name if you want to throw me a friendy
Drop your build into Spansh and see what route it comes out with on the Galaxy Plotter. I know I can Colonia to Sol in about 3hr 30m with a 50/60ly ship. See what it offers you. Alternativly get to a DSSA Fleet Carrier with a Sidewinder to purchase, sell the nav data (slight surchage to FC) and fast trael back with an exploding sidey
A sub and a like simple for the Blake's 7 reference 😉 Still one of my fav sci-fi series
Oh if only a million subs were as simple as pointing out the dangers of British Sci-Fi and happy endings! Welcome aboard.
That would play perfectly into the concept of introducing System Colonization next year - it would give us a reason to build new colonies - all the refugees from the Sol System will need new homes
To cross even more genres, the new ships and the new code feels like a Chekov's Gun to me.
I was on my way to Sol, in my Vulture, to save the day, but ehm.... well... I was stopped. Somehow.
Problems with interdiction?
@@modernspectrumgaming The Thargoids peeled me out of Hyperspace. But unlike the old times on the Commodore 64, I lost 😅
Well, if it is a British ending then I won't need to grind a Sol pass, will I?
FDev has lifted the need for Permits in Sirius and Sol, so you can share and enjoy the despair over a nice brew.
I suspect the last titan is on a kamikaze mission...draw as many human resources to Sol, and go boom! And I recall Blake's 7 ;)
When Titans go boom, Titans leave behind caustic clouds. Not as big as a planet... at least not yet.
That's a sub
Thank you!
Where is the Constrictor?
Good Video! Agree with most of what you said except the MkV being small, I was hoping to get an all rounder ship to replace the python mk1, so I was a bit disappointed about it being small, however I totally agree that if it's named Cobra it makes sense it's would be small, once again FDEV bringing our hopes up to just crush them later... Now if only they could fix Laser Mining for Powerplay, and re-enable rares and escape pods that are still disabled....and fix the Fleet Carrier Bartender taking hostage all of the owner's odyssey items bug, the game would be enjoyable ;)
I've never had a problem with the grind in Elite. There are enough different things to do that if I start to tire of one thing it's effortless to shift focus to something else. Sure, I didn't go from a Sidewinder to a Corvette in a week, but I've never once complained about the grind because in 5200+ hours I've never not enjoyed what I was doing (okay, with the exception of bugs and crashes). I feel bad for the people who start playing with the mindset that the objective is to get a billion credits/an Anaconda/a fleet carrier, and ignore everything else. Those players (and I have friends who've fallen into that trap) burn out quickly, and are the ones who incorrectly claim that the game is "a mile wide and an inch deep". It's not. You just skipped past all of the amazing details, lore, and variety that makes Elite not just a game to play but a place to live in. BTW, I never got past Deadly in the original Elite, which made reaching triple Elite in E:D all the sweeter! I don't want to sound like the "back in my day we walked to school uphill both ways" old man, but I've yet to find an original Elite player who uses a docking computer in E:D. Remembering the countless times I crashed while docking in the original game, the first time I lined up and entered the mail slot in E:D I literally laughed out loud at how easy it was by comparison. Reverse thrust and lateral thrusters! Such luxury!
Just stumbled across this channel. Glad I did!
Ship Interiors, When Elite gets a new game engine!
Vocal minority who want ship interiors lmfao, who are you kidding? More like the majority who would relish this feature......why come out with such a ridiculous statement against what is widly regarded as the number one wanted feature along with more atmospheric planets
As they say on other sites... "Citation Needed." You can see in the comments here, on other channels, and other forums there are those for, and those against. Personally I believe there are more who prioritise other features than those who prioritise ship interiors. A statistically randomised survey would be good to know, but the practicality (engine, cost, what game loop would be beneficial) against ship interiors cannot be overlooked.
@modernspectrumgaming i think it's just a case you don't want ships interiors and your trying to persuade yourself most dont, and yeah citation is needed before you make your statment, yeah their are a few who dont want them, but i sure they wish the interiors of the space stations never existed or we should have never left Elite's 1984 graphics, because just think how the developers could have focused the resources on other game play features.......but the ships cockpits are already modeled, it would not be huge undertaking to just model partial interiors for certain key areas of each ship, only idiots are demanding full interiors for every ship....but we will see in time what happens
I would Love ship interiors, but the poor quality of the FPS game heavily implies that the current engine is just bad at doing this kind of thing. Star Citizen has ship interiors, but there are gameplay loops associated with walking around those ships. Unless FDev build in a lot more FPS features, which I don't think is a good use of limited Dev time, ship interiors aren't really that impactful.
I thought bringing it to console would be there biggest challenge, lol
wow he misspoke its not that big of a deal
And it took how long to get cleared up?
We are now able to get feet on the ground, which in the process of doing, has added additonal time to the (Forgive Me!) grind. There is to the N-th degree the abiltity to debate the additional time. Prior to being able where as there were those who desired the ability to have feet on the ground. I've sat at the helm of various ship for more than 9,000 hour's. And not once while there were other's who did. Desire to any point less than the N-th degree, leave my seat. But now that I can, it's when I choose to, added additional time to what is referred to and accepted, "THE GRIND". Assuming FDEV is able to and at some unknown point in the future, implement the ability to walk about one's ship. There will be those that will jump for joy, some of which will as they had prior to being able to put feet on the ground which has added time to the already length of time envolved in "GRINDING" even more complaint's, when having to walk to an area from the helm, down stair's prior to putting feet on the ground. And after FDEV if ever, actually implement's the ability. Just as Chris Robert's mandate's in his game referred to or named Star Citizen. Will be mandated to not only having restroom's with only signage, but actually available room in which though one can't actually utilze in any way shape or form the purposfullness a rest room is designed for. Galley's in which one can actualy use, will be one of many other addition's, meaning such as that of a bath, shower, pool, billard table etc. etc. etc. All of which will be mandated to utilize more and more of one's device's resource's. To the point where as they will be mandated to be either upgraded or totally replaced. Such as it's happened to those who have partnered with Star Citizen originally, have been mandated to do when adding all of the varios attribute's in which none have them serve an actual purpose, except in there usage of a device's resource's. FDEV can, could give totally free the newest release version of Elite Dangerous to someone simply walking by on the street. Whom doesn't have a device in which it is mandated to have, when it must be installed on a device. Which then though the program is totally free. One is mandated to invest in the purchase of a device or the giving or receiveing of ED, become's to the N-th degree; 100% moot.
I would happily return to the game if they implemented permanant ship storage. Allowing the cargo to stay with the ship unless you actually require it when swapping models to a smaller craft. Why not? MMO's have been doing this for more than two decades and yet, in 2024 Elite has a system where you have to sell your hard earned items just to move to a smaller ship. No, I dont want to be tied to a carrier.
No useless ship interiors please, gameplay and more satisfying narrative and missions instead.
Seconded... work with what you have and make that polished, rather than a new 'minimum viable project' for a short term hit.
Elite dangerous should have an offline mode for its legacy servers too as they are expected to shutdown at some point.
Wouldn't that means saving billions of star systems on your local machine?
@@darkseraph2009 No - because the galaxy is procedurally generated. Only the systems that have previously been visited would need to be saved locally.
I agree with @SigamRho2922 because even for them it would be impossible to save billions of star systems with their servers, as it is an unimaginable amount of data even for their servers
Ship interiors: They've had ten years to tell us that the Cobra engine simply cannot do it. We've been asking that question since beta, I don't expect an answer any time soon. Look how poorly the carrier interiors were implemented. This vast kilometer long ship and we get a few boxes to walk into if we pay to keep them open and even then, there is nothing you can do inside that couldn't be done from the menu. I would pay real money for each ship interior but the fact this isn't a thing sort of shows it isn't possible. Same with sandbox base building. The carriers are the perfect way to get out to the other side of the Galaxy and start colonising planets by letting us build our own bases there but the engine and the infrastructure just can't do it. They should be honest but I suspect if they were, that might be the end.
Yep, the past performance on comms has been very much like this. With staff turnover and a new found energy in the game (even if we have to thank F1 Manager et al for their poor performance) the new crowd could well change the approach. The FleetCarriers show what can and can't be done, and that's with a fixed layout. Cobra engine never could, and short of a full rework I doubt an engine change can happen now (Elite:Deadly for 2030 though?)
I have a counter argument though: We don't know if the Cobra V was concepted as a small ship. Last month the concept render could have featured a medium ship which during development was changed to small size this month.
Good counter-point. In reply I'd say that when the speculation arose, that would be a great time to set expectations with a quick social media post, heck if you wanted to stay in story you could do an "Exclusive: From Our Shipyard Correspondent" leak on the C5 on Galnet. That has the bonus of not only keeping expectations set, but does it in the fabric of the game, not just IRL.
Agree 100% regarding communication - but I still want ship interiors!! 😁 The ships are our home, our base in Elite. Sad that we still don't have interiors, after all these years.
Maybe it's because I'm an old school space nerd. 14 days in the cockpit of a Gemini and you never left, because there was nowhere else to go! 1960s spaceships didn't have interiors, just a spacious jacket around the astronauts!
Starfield has ship interiors - it is just an annoyance after the 2 minute initial hit. Star Citizen has ship interiors (and $1000+ ships) - maybe if they had spent more time on the actual gameplay and stability, it would be closer to a viable product. Fdev need to use their time and money wisely, implementing features that are actually useful.
@@Magnumaniac with fdev, it can be done well(with transporters/doors/terminals that have quick cockpit access), outside of living/captains quarters, most everything in the [not doplhin/orca/beluga/imp line] can be generic, like cargo and hangars, maybe even the probe scanner can be visible.(ship interiors are cheap enough on asset stores) but.. the engine could get wrecked with surface and interior, and then people will want boarding combat, manual cargo grabbing(tk stick/gun from SC), etc. last issue with interiors, rescaling ships that are incorrect, like titan stairs on cutter, or 3' space on mandalay(stared at it too much)
If you want interiors, then you want a normal server system instead of peer to peer, therefore, you want to pay monthly subscription of a nice amount. Also you want to spend a lot of time for waiting, years.
My friend swears that, in the last 3-6 months, they have redesigned all the ship interiors. He swears that my cutter and his beluga both look different in the cockpit in camera mode since we bought the ships earlier this year. He claims this is them preparing for ship interiors. A lot of the doors now look like settlement doors, whereas in the past they were sort of unique based on each ship manufacturer, now it seems like they might be working components found in settlements. He says the size and layout of the desks and furniture and stuff has rearranged in the cutter whereas before he said it looked like a dated hospital aesthetic, all White and dull, but now it looks more like something from star wars or star trek. I don't have the memory to remember what my ship interior (that I can't even explore) looked like 3-6 months ago. But if he's correct, they've been preparing for ship interiors in recent updates at least throughout this year
I already spend 60 EURs on Arx this year 🙈 but happy to, actually! Love the game - it has accompanied my life, on and off, since 1985 - looking forward to seeing more!
I've bought every early access, so its about the same for me. The difference to Loot Boxes is you get to choose what you spend the game currency on. Which I much prefer.
Not quite correct. Docking is not grind at all, but core spaceship game gameplay. In Elite'84: * Trade wasn't grind, but was the actual game, among with flying and fightting pirates. * You didn't need to find pirates, they used to find you. * Docking computer cost 10 KCr, additionally, you could save only when docked. Grind is monotonic boring activity (either compulsory or voluntary) aside interesting gameplay. In ED some activities could be called actual grind, like collecting engineer materials. Some activities you could make a grind voluntary, for example boring credit earning, if you want to get, say, Conda/Cutter after 12 hours.
What I call gampleay, can also be called grind... or at least a 'good grind'. Core gameply loops for the win.
@modernspectrumgaming You should not play games, then, since all gameplay is grind for you.
Well said Cmdr. o7
Blaze (Grind) Your Own Path CMDRs! Nice vidya!
The real Life is a constant grinding, why a game like this could be different? I love Elite series for sure, because IRL I can't go to a different planet, and yet I need to grind.
Having everything handed to you on a platter with no effort would not improve the game. You need the challenge and the feeling of reward. And as the video points out, this has always been the way of Elite. 2024 saw some rebalancing to suit the current gaming landscape, but it very much kept the ethos of Elite present.
so, at Jameson, when u gather all the collected stuff about, and at other locations too, an log off an back on again, rinse, repeat, is that relaxing gameplay? respectful of players time? they changed that now so u get alot of materials from missions instead, why change perfection? :0)
With FDev tweaking this in 2024 so you don't need to relog to play effectively at HGE or Crash sites, plus more mats as mission rewards, they've kept the thos but brought it up to date. IMO (as is everything here, enjoying the debate every week in the comments).
@@modernspectrumgaming but they changed it, so admitted it was done badly an grind, dont get me wrong, im glad they did, but if grind was good, why change it? i think it lost them a fair few players before they finally faced reality, hopefully now theyll carry on an sort the probs faster
As you said, in elite, as in life, you need to create your own challenges
When you have modern games giving you encouragement like a Vegas pinball machine, Elites "here's a line of text" reward is vastly different. Part of the controversy might simply be that the feeling of 'reward' is so different in the Elite universe than it is in say Balatro.
There is much of the grind that i find relaxing.
Wow. Im glad to see someone like minded who understands the grind 😂
I was seriously disappointed when they announced the new cobra, we don't need yet another Multi-purpose medium. I thought the 4 new ships should have been 2 mediums, one small and one large.
With the key phrase being here "...at least for me." or in other words "How very interesting"
"...at least for me" is very much in effect. The Elite Scout is geared towards personal opinion; I wanted something that complements the various YT News channels and Streams. I'm the starting point, the debate continues.
What I would like to see is a personal carrier. Like a normal one but with maybe three medium pads for personal use at maybe 2B Cr and dramatically smaller running costs.
It feels like an obvious spot, but part of me feels there should be some gaps, rather than something everywhere. It's a stretch but not hugely difficult to find the 8Bil you need for the Fleet Carrier (5B carrier, 2B outfitting, 1B running costs for 40 weeks). And if you can get 8B, you can find the weekly cost. What I would love though is a Fleet Carrier outfitted for exploration. Longer jump range, more fuel efficient, but reduced cargo space, would 10,000t work, enough for a Vista, Cartographics, Shipyard for friends. Give it the range to do Sol to Beagle Point. That feels like a 3B purchase, and can be done within the existing code.
TBF, the Krait was never a medium before either, but the new ones are great regardless. From what I've seen and what has been said, it's only just barely a medium and I think it's flight characteristics will better decide how "Cobra-like" it is than the size of pad it can land on. I do hope we get some new small (and large, for that matter) ships next year though.
Curious to see the handling, yes. Given how slippy the Mandalay is, there's not much twitchyness left for the Mediums.
I feel the cobra mkV as a medium will be a pure nostalgia ship. Likely I will fly but when I need to get job done I’ll switch to more effective medium ship. Such a pity. I could say the same about small Cobras too though. Given anniversary I welcome a tip of the hat nostalgic celebration with new cobra. Especially since I have no access to mkIV.
Im actually looking forward to the MKV. Only because I am an Asp Scout fan and I truly believe this is actually the Asp Scout MK2, but considering how badly the Asp flopped, they called it a Cobra.
ASP Scout fan here as well (I mean, I think the videos and channel name give it away). There is a place for a medium Multi-Role ship, and I could get behind this being an Aspie2... because it's certainly not a Cobra!

If it looked cheap, it looked good to Clive.
"Rich Corinthian Leather" I am old enough to remember those car commercials. 🤣
I was pretty sure someone would spot that one and have a quiet chuckle. Congratulations.
You should plot your initial course clear thru to Hutton. Ps: the mandalay can do it without heatsinks. I placed 25th.
Yesterday to moved to Explorers Anchrorich with my Mandalay. Arrived today :)
Have fun!
I’m 80 jumps away from Beagle Point while doing exobiology, it’s crazy how far this thing can jump and how fast it is ready to jump again.
A shade over 100 jumps from the Bubble to Colonia, with a bit of focus took me just over three hours to get there. It's a beast
good lord the background noise
I'll film it in deep space next time (or fix the balance ;-) )
It makes little sense putting size 3 shield in to size 4 slot and then size 3 cargo rack into 3... just use a size 4 cargo rack... it doesn't add any weight and JUST IN CASE gives you a larger rack with no penalty putting the shield in the 3 slot.
a safe build thisd is cool
And lots of variants in the comments, plenty for everyone to explore!

thx
I just got my mandalay i shall try your specs see how i get on with it
Do note that there's some engineering in there, but looking forward to what you can put together. Let us know!
@@modernspectrumgaming my intensions is mainly to discover and to get some components to upgrade so i thought this would be a quicker way.
Happy to give you the quickstart. If you're still early days, I'd move the powerplant up to Class 4 or Class 5 to give you more headroom to play around with outfitting. This build is pretty tight to get weight down.
@@modernspectrumgaming now that would be a good idea , i have been playing for some time but i have been doing a lot of trading etc and movement of goods . so i bought this ship to get me more places for upgrades , i do have most of the ships but i like the style and the capabilities of this ship. not done the power plants but top of my list now.
There are a lot of ships, and each one has a lot of tweaks and builds. You'll find your forever ship soon enough (but of course you'll ned up with a hanger of ships for dedicated things!). For obvious reasons, I'm an ASP Scout fan.
3D PP not good IMHO. Always go for the class A (the smallest possible here for explo e.g. 2A). D class has bad heat efficiency and you'll pay that by more easily overheat while fuel scooping
It's a balance on going lighter, and going for the efficiency. The 2A was cutting it really fine on power budget for what I wanted. 3A vs 3D? Curiously I've put the Coriolis build with 3A, so clearly even I can't make my mind up!
@@modernspectrumgaming Well I'd counter against what you're saying by you engineering your drives as clean "for heat" but between your clean drives and your D-rated powerplant your heat while scooping is the same as a regular A-Rated dirty drive Mandalay so really all you're doing is gimping your ships normal space performance for a placebo affect when it comes to heat. The only thing you're getting out of those choices is a little more jump range. I'd argue that going full dirty drives increases your survivability far more than any other modification possibly could. This is especially true since you're using D-Rated thrusters and as a result are already dramatically slower than you should be. Your build with A-Rated thrusters and dirty drives would probably get between 570-600ms top speed.
Good counter. I wish I had planned it out and could say *ahah, see more jump range* but I'm not that meticulous. Although I'd be interested to see a big specs breakdown to find out if that's the case with *this* ship.
@@modernspectrumgaming Yeah until we get an edsy update with the Mandalay that'll be pretty hard to do effectively. I personally sit in the middle between the explorer folk and the pvp folk. Having been exclusively open play as a lawful enforcer and pre-engineers being heavy into PVP... I tend to focus everything I build on surviving in Open. The Mandalay honestly deserves more. I'm running one right now with no weapons and an A-Rated core with Sensors & Life Support D-rated for range/speed and I'm running 587ms, 55ly laden jump range and 70.88 unladen with a G5 guardian FSD booster and 3A Prismatic shield boasting 1195mj shield tank. I have another multirole build that is also sits between 45-50ly (without a guardian FSD booster) and can do a crapload of activities in the game. Frontier finally gave explorers a ship that can both multirole and explore while still being fast and fun to fly and it deserves to be fit for more than minmaxed range imo. Builds that follow the typical exploration meta are squishy and die easily, even to NPC's. Something I rarely ever hear explorers talk about or acknowledge for example is the longer you sit in supercruise the more your ships integrity is reduced. As your ship integrity drops from 100% to 0% there is a sliding scale that goes from 0% increased damage at 100% integrity to 30% increase damage at 0% integrity (to the ship itself, not the shields). What this winds up meaning is that the moment your "bumper" shields go off, you're taking 30% more damage of whatever is incoming. On top of that typical explorer builds also have multiple negative resists which are also increasing your incoming damage. The result winds up being ~60% or higher increased damage and very small mistakes being absolutely catastrophic. None of this is of course to dog on you or your build. I only bother to mention any of this because you choose to make sacrifices to your range for things that make sense. I just want to encourage you to push a bit further and really embrace the insane levels of OP that the Mandalay can boast. Even if you run a Mandalay full bore you're still getting a 40-50ly jump range without guardian FSD boosters, which is more than enough to deal with almost anywhere but the absolute most extreme gaps between stars, and lets face it if you have a carrier you are toting around the galaxy with you, you can have an extreme build for those scenarios when required. Anyways I enjoyed your video and I hope you are enjoying your Mandalay as much as I am mine!
@@CMDRArsenCross Really appreciate this, didn't take it as a dog on the build at all. I do wonder if the increased NPC aggression discussed in PowerPlay 2,0 spaces will also have an impact on the general state of "Dangerousness" in the Galaxy... if so, the paper builds may get a touch more exposed over the next few months. That would be ... interesting! Presumably your build is engineering up the Prismatics and throwing some shield boosters on? And, ssh, but *not* having the data from EDSY/Coriolis to work on the build has been refreshing. Tha's not to say I never want them there, but doing the old fashioned work/maths/feeling of old... welcome back!
