Cal Poly Professor Dr. Nishi Rajakaruna's talk on Serpentine Soils June 11, 2022
Переглядів 1612 роки тому
Serpentine soils have long fascinated botanists for the specialized floras they support and the challenges they pose to plant survival and growth. Serpentine ecology is not a foreign concept to California’s botanists. After all, serpentinite is the state rock and serpentinite outcrops within the California Floristic Province harbor 14.7% of California’s endemic plants (~255 taxa), including man...

    In South Africa, there are several names for this native plant, including Septemberbossie, Augustusbossie, Blouertjie, Langelede, Ulopesi, Umbalabala, Uchwasha... depending on which local language you speak. Info from the SANBI website.

    Thank you for making this public. I work with the Bolsa Chica Land Trust at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, Ca and one of our primary focuses is habitat restoration on the upland mesa (coastal sage scrub and grasses). However, we do have some sand dune habitat and in the coming years the path will be renovated and along with it, hopefully, the habitat. Boy, do we understand the issue with social trails! Your talk was informative and helpful.

    I love cooking with bay leaves 🍃 that’s why I’m purchasing a little small twig because it’s actually like a twig to grow my own, they’re one of the best herbs around I cook with bay leaves all the time, all my sauces, like spaghetti sauce, soups, taco meat, etc. etc. cooking without it you can actually taste the difference the Bay Leaves 🍃 Extraordinary taste take your food to another place and once you use them, you know the difference when you don’t have them, I need them always in my life, their main part of the kitchen some thing that I purchase all the time, my sauces will be bland without it, so it’s time to grow my own. I know it’s going take a little while before I get a chance to even use the leaves but it’s worth the wait. You’re blessed woman , God bless you with the common sense to plant extraordinary tree. I can’t wait to mines to grow so I can use the leaves! But I know I have to be patient hopefully in a 2 years. Lol 😂 🥰👩🏾‍🦲🍃🥰

    Kinda sad, the native environment and all the attending wildlife is essentially gone. If you brought a native person from 200 years ago and showed him the area he would not recognize it.

    • @mirozen_
      @mirozen_ 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure about planting from seeds, but you can start a new bay tree from a cutting. My sister gave me a cutting in a pot and initially it had only two leaves. With only two leaves I didn't think it could even survive let alone thrive but after a couple months it really took off. Maybe you can see if any bay trees are growing in your area and if you find one ask the owner if you can get a clipping. Good luck!

    How do you propagate them, have tried from cuttings many times....?

    • @joscelyndelatorre797
      @joscelyndelatorre797 4 роки тому

      Hi Sandra, We've propagated them from horizontal root cuttings. I haven't personally done it in awhile, but I believe it's done in the fall. You dig up some of the horizontal roots coming off the plant and cut it into sections, making sure each section has a bud that is sprouting upward. Bury each piece about an inch deep in light potting mix and keep moist. It takes some time to root and you should eventually have top growth appear. (-Madeline, propagation volunteer)

    I grew up with Laurel Sumac living in San Diego and Orange Counties. It was one of the first plants I learned about as a kid!! Memories!! The funniest memory I have is seeing one at about 4,000' elevation in the Santa Ana Mountains along Main Divide Rd. in Orange County, with snow on the ground!
