@@SplitTheDiffGreat to hear, I can’t explain how valuable you and your videos are. 👌🏻👌🏻
That means a lot to me! Thank you so much@@FreyNekki !
Hi, Got to you through vfx Nomad. I really admire your approach.
Welcome aboard :) I really appreciate your feedback!
Insane tut! I have seen this and other similar techniques using matrix and laplacian nodes being used in big Hollywood VFX companies but they are always a bit hard to figure out as to exactly what's going on. Can you please explain the matrix node and why you entered those values and what you did in the shuffle nodes below them? Thanks!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your feedback. Regarding the matrix node. If you haven't watched it yet, you should check out my "Unleash The Node" episode about the Blur node. I'm explaining the concept of convolution with the help of a matrix. Maybe this will help you to better understand what happens under the hood. The values I'm using here are based on a Scharr operation (to detect edges based on gradients / derivatives). I understand that those a very complex topics, but you'll just need to invest some time to try to understand the process step by step (starting with researching about convolution). I used the shuffle nodes below to store the output of the horizontal edge detection in my red channel and the vertical edge detection in my green channel - creating some type of STmap (please do some research on STmaps too if that topic is unclear). My plan is to produce some more content about the matrix node (and matrices in general) in the future. So stay tuned :)
@@SplitTheDiff thanks! Will surely check all your videos out to understand it better 💯
hi. thanks for this, I have watched almost all your videos and have downloaded them for reference. a Humble request from me please. can you do a series on Expressions in Nuke please, TCL will do

Hi Sebastian, I'm wondering how I can apply defocus effects to di-mattes (same defocus that applied to RGBA channels) using PG Bokeh node. Can you give me some guidance?
Hi! Thank you very much for your comment and apologies for the late reply. If you use the Bokeh - formerly PG Bokeh - node (now integrated in Nuke), you can simply set the "Bokeh Channels" dropdown knob to "all" and it should apply the effect to all included layers. I hope that helps.
@seb, your suit suits the content. Superb!
Good tutorial! But i think that what do you need is just denoise plate, transform and regrain again. Transforming can be by stmap.
Apologies for the late reply. Absolutely! In general, the intention for my tutorials is to (over)stimulate the brain a little bit with techniques and core knowledge that can then be used for something completely different. I know that someone used this approach already to create a Moiré effect for example. But I agree - Your suggestion is definitely the preferred method if it's about regraining. Thank you very much for your input :)
I don't fully get what the grade and dilate are linked to in the beginning of the blurunpremult explanation. I'd love to dive deeper in on this -- is this sample script available to poke around in on your website?
Thank you very much for reaching out :) The Grade node is treating the alpha channel only to shift the semi transparent into solid areas, so they can properly get dilated. Both those nodes are expression linked to the Group node I built, so the example with the setup broken down into individual nodes exactly resembles the result we get using the Group node. I'm traveling at the moment (for quite some time), but I will set a reminder to upload a script on my website that you can take a closer look at. Please bug me again in case I forget :)

Hallo Sebastian, Thank you for this wonderful and friendly channel. How and where did you start out in the movies, vfx and nuke? Kind regards K
Hallo :) Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoy the content :) I started working as an intern in a small German VFX company in 2008 (while studying) - mostly working with Fusion. I got my first real jobs in 2010 in Germany and Ireland (finally working with Nuke), before moving around (London, Vancouver, Stuttgart, Munich, Vienna) and trying out different studios (DNEG, ILM, MPC, Trixter, Rise, Mackevision, Scanline, Digital Domain, Image Engine, ...) to figure out what 1.) I would like my career path to look like and 2.) which studio (size, vibe, country, ...) fits me and vice versa. For the last 7 years I've lived in Vancouver and have worked at Image Engine for the past 2 years (great, great company!!!). What about you?
amazing sir
Thank you :)
Hi. Thanks you for this tutorial! It is a lot of useful information. But i have an error. When I create the merge expression and put the expression: “(clamp…)”, the Bz is not working for me. Because I render with arnold and I use the Z, not the depth.z. Do you have any solution for that? Anyways, great job!! 😊
Thank you very much for your feedback :) One option could be to shuffle your Arnold Z channel into the depth.z channel (Shuffle Node). The other option is to change the expression so it properly points to the channel name Arnold stores the depth pass in. As an example: Let's say you have a layer that is called "normals", then you can use Bnormals.red to access the red channel of that layer. If your depth channel is stored in a layer called Z, you should be able to access it with BZ.red (or .green or .blue - depending on if the information is stored in all 3 channels or just 1).
@@SplitTheDiff Thank you for your help!! It works now! :D
@@mariio.sanchezz Great to hear :)
Really useful, thanks for sharing it! ❤
Thank you very much for your feedback Danilo :)
Compositors I've been working with have a completly artistic approuch to shots, usually eye balling with real world images and a lot of paint. I do prefer technical ways to solve shots, since you're aways creating tools and everything is easily adjustable after. Is there some study reference for VFX artist or just looking into math/geometry will help me out to solve problems in that way?
Hey Lucas, Thank you very much for your feedback! That's what I love about compositing. We can always have a mix of both approaches - technical as well as artistic setups. These days I feel like most of the major productions obviously want to go with a photorealistic look for their visual effects - at least at first. And then rules get bend and broken - which can be great. That's why I usually trust technical setups for solid first versions - so we can say that we did everything to match the photorealistic plate / look. At least we know the base is correct. And then we can go from there. The book I'm recommending in my video here is definitely an awesome resource - together with books I'm listing in the description. The next step would be indeed to dive a bit into math and physics. Since compositing is math anyways you will be surprised how many of the concepts we can actually easily bring into our work.
Thank you for good advice
Thank you for coming by :)
Real quality on this site. Love it.
Thank you so much :)
Amazing Sebastian! Great Stuff as always, can you please create one for photoreal atmospheric scintillation
Thank you very much :) That is actually a very interesting suggestion. I'll keep it in mind :)
Hey man! I was watching Steffen Hampel's "Arrival" shot breakdown. In that video he said that you were responsible for the compositing, and you will do a breakdown of it. The post processing was so good. Will you do a video about it? I've been waiting for ages.
Hey :) Thank you very much for getting in touch and thanks for the reminder :) I was very busy over the last year and figured it was already too late to catch up with that project breakdown. I appreciate the interest though and I guess it could be a good idea to talk about this shot as my next video - and by that not necessarily going through the script node by node, but rather by talking about certain approaches and important techniques to push things into a photorealistic direction. Please stay tuned :)
@@SplitTheDiff Thanks man. Just a short breakdown will be very helpful! I can understand how busy you are. I am very thankful for those unleash the nodes videos. I pray and hope that you will stay healthy and motivated and keep these videos coming.

Love the use of the ColorLookup curve being referenced in the expression, I haven't seen that one before. I've been playing with some sub frame tricks and that may be a cleaner way of referencing frames. Might also be able to use that trick to build a variable STmap node. Nice work and thank you for sharing!
