Witherfall is the band that Jake Dreyer (lead guitar in Demons & Wizards and a stint with Iced Earth) was in. The book you mentioned, 'Wicked Words and Epic Tales' was a collection of lyrics, interviews and artwork which span 35 years of his career. The book was in the works (as I recall) before J6 and the release of it was delayed because he was arrested. He is divorced/not married as far as I know (Wendi Schaffer). I was a huge Iced Earth fan up until around 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' which was released in 1998. 'The Dark Saga' (1996) is a brilliant album based on the Tom McFarlane Spawn series. Jon Schaffer was an incredibly talented guitar player/songwriter. Very unique rhythm style that was very powerful and full of energy, excellent lyrics, brilliant atmosphere. When I first started noticing the insane, off the rails interviews where all an interviewer had to do was mention the word 'politics' and he would go off on an extremist rant session for over 30 min that involved nothing about the album that was coming out, I started to get turned off. He sounded unhinged. When 'Glorious Burden' came out (2004), I was not interested in Iced Earth material any longer. A friend sent me a copy (since I owned everything else Iced Earth ever put out) and it starts with The Star Spangled Banner. Considering most of his fans are European, I thought this was a strange move. I love America, Star Spangled Banner is a source of pride for all Americans, but hearing it over and over at the start of an album about the Civil War seemed a bit overkill and considering his extremist views, it became yet another turn off. The confederate flag stage gear, the don't tread on me guitar, 1776 tats, etc., just wow okay? Demons & Wizards project was completely non-political and absolutely brilliant. Hansi Kursch and Schaffer were an amazing duo. They had been friends for many years prior. I own various versions of all 3 releases of D&W. If you are metal, highly recommend the Wacken Show of Demons & Wizards. It's an outstanding live show. I too am horrified by what he did on J6 and think he should be punished for it (they ALL should). I don't think he had much of a chance (if you research his beginnings) given his upbringing and chaotic childhood. Not making excuses, but I am extremely saddened and disappointed by his actions. What a waste of talent and a really foolish way to destroy a career that took many years to build.

The very qoutes you take of Schaffer vs the labels and characterization you apply to him show, at least, the man's critical thinking and nuance compared to your biased critique. Jon Schaffer may be an old crazy dude, but much of his rebellious nature is metal. You have the right to enjoy/support the government and it's systemic practices, but that's not very metal.
