D.Shostakovich: Symphony No.14 - M. Rostropovich
Переглядів 917Рік тому
The Fourteenth Symphony is not about death but about unnatural death; death caused by murder, oppression, and war. In fact there is not one ‘normal’ death described in the whole work and it is significant that all four of the poets whose words Shostakovich chose to set died in somewhat less than natural circumstances. Lorca was shot without trial during the Spanish Civil War; Apollinaire died i...

Shostakovich - Tender Girl Song (from the film "The First Train")
Переглядів 7483 роки тому
This song is inspired by a Russian folk song which is also used in his 11th Symphony. Bear in mind this is a girl addressing her female friends. Translating on the fly, surely this can be polished. Hey sisters, what am I doing? I can't live without my love. Everybody calls me strong in life But in love I was timid. When I see my loved one in the distance I run towards him. But when we meet - I ...

GR truly "gets" what this work was saying. Only one aspect was the situation in Russia yet people bang on about that. Of greater importance is the composer's commitment to the lineage of the symphony as an entity and the 9th makes best sense in the spirit of Haydn and composer 'Papa' had admired. When Haydn had to quit Vienna for Hungary and the remote Esterhazy estate he took in his small trunk cutlery, paper, a flask of ink, quill sharpeners, a single change of clothes, some gold coins and CPE Bach's hefty book on form and orchestration. The so-called 'Mannheim School' composers had influenced young Haydn but CPE Bach was scarcely in with the crowd. He had composed a series of 'sinfonias' which had taken him further away from Mannheim ideas and towards a struggle with form and consolidation which evolved into the classical symphony via Haydn and others. Note especially how Shostakovich uses 4 movements but also sub-sections and this is typical of CPE Bach, Haydn with a small orchestra to experiment with and the funding of the Esterhazy family (mostly). In the early Hungarian-based symphonies, then again later in the varying shapes of the 'Sturm und Drang' symphonies, reached into CPE Bach's restlessness mixed with wry humor and Shostakovich had similar characteristics 200 years after the development of the rococo period came and went. Haydn occasionally had performed his early and middle symphonies through Mozart's time and into young Beethoven's. Mozart's last 2 symphonies were composed one in shadow and the last in light -- with little prospect of being given because of their length and fickle audiences and when Haydn heard a version of the 'Eroica' he reached back to the antecedents of this and the last Mozart ones in his own and CPE Bach's work. Here, Rozhdestvensky understands and emphasizes the 'quirks' which Beethoven had divined and explores how his friend had done precisely that. Some small clues in Shostakovich's 9th point straight to his 10th in a different 'language' from the war symphonies and straight to 11, 13 and 15. The pedigree of the symphony from its beginnings to the late 20th century was safe in the hands of the bespectacled Russian and as surprising as the other composers mentioned and the 14th symphony has plenty of Mahler hovering too.

For those who love this superb performance of Shostakovich S4 conducted by Kirill Kondrashin, I recommend to listen the version of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks by Mariss Jansons (2004). It has the quality, timing and performance of Kondrashin’s but with a superb sound. In my opinion the version of this symphony conducted by Jansons is better than others conductors like Rostropovich, Haitink, Gergiev, Myung-whun Chung, Kitajenko, Rozhdestvensky.
