Diagnosed with Autism & ADHD at 54: Answering 10 Questions About My Late Diagnosis Journey
At age 54, I received a life-changing diagnosis: Autism and ADHD. After decades of burnouts, misdiagnoses like depression and anxiety, chronic health issues, and heavy masking, I finally began to understand the full picture of my life. In this video, I’m opening up and answering 10 deeply personal questions about my late diagnosis journey.
From my quirky childhood memories to the toll of masking and unmasking, from navigating health challenges to my hopes for the future, I share it all with the goal of helping others feel less alone.
🎥 Questions I Answer in This Video:
What were the early signs of Autism and ADHD in your childhood that went unnoticed?
How did masking affect your life growing up and into adulthood?
What connection do you see between neurodivergence and your physical health challenges?
How did your undiagnosed Autism and ADHD lead to cycles of burnout and exhaustion?
What has unmasking been like after decades of hiding your true self?
How are you adjusting to life on the spectrum today?
What emotions did you feel when diagnosed at 54, and how did it change your perspective?

How Neurodivergent Minds Experience Triggers
Many similarities in sensory issues with what you've listed. Do you feel like your sensitivity has increased or decreased with age? I feel certain that perimenopause is increasing some of them in my case...
@@AuthenticallyMeAuDHD Yes absolutely. They are learning that perimenopause exacerbates our symptoms and is likely the main reason many women are finally getting diagnosed because they are seeking answers for why they can no longer cope with things they previously could cope with (or at least were able to manage somehow).
My AuDHD point : Blurt out impulsively honest opinion using straightforward, literal communication to customers and as soon as I say it I then recognize what I had said and hope not to receive a complaint on my opinion.🤐
@@tomasvoldrich I hear you! I second guess my communication all the time. It's exhausting!
This video was so great, I understand so well, thank you. It's been so challenging figuring this whole mess out. I found autistic creators (basically all the ones I found) so relatable but it wasn't the same with ADHDers. I didn't necessarily connect with them so easily and I think that's exactly y, because they're kind of contrary in ways like u illustrated in this video. I finally did find stuff about ADHD that I was interested in and finally I could see that I for sure have it, it was so obvious in ways but I am quite bright and diligent and quiet, I wasn't causing a scene and I was doing well in school so it does make sense it wasn't noticed at school. Do you not put out videos very often? I've actually started doing videos too. I'm just self realized autistic and ADHD but I am now on meds for ADHD, which really helps for the ADHD stuff but it kind of makes things worse with autistic traits. The ADHD traits also made me question if I could really b autistic because of struggling to have routine. I feel like I'm incapable of creating structure in my life, well not totally incapable it is there in some aspects ❤
@@heedmydemands It's so complex and although there are similar traits we can relate to, we are all individuals and masking will also play a part in that. I put out videos once a week. I work a very stressful job and this video, though only 5mins long took me 7hrs to edit and was one of the harder ones to do. I nearly didn't get it done. Burnout is very hard for me at the moment. I'm glad you're here. I'll check out your videos.
@LateDiagnosed well it's much appreciated. I even sent it to my mom to watch

this is a great video.
It's sad that we have to mask, I agree. It's so tiring.
Thank you!
Thank you for the video and the reassurances, Michelle. Verbal instructions (especially overly long or complex ones) had always been a problem with my brain, and I have found ways of coping (ie. writing everything down), but I do wish it were easier for us. Hope you're doing well, and happy new year!

@@WoohooliganComedy Thank you. Masking is so complex. We learn how to adapt and camouflage our natural behaviours based on our observed feedback since early age so to us, it's just how we are, but I have found that looking back on things I found really hard but was told I had to do, as a child, has helped me uncover what I've had to adapt (ie mask).
Thank you for your videos this year, Michelle! I have really appreciated being able to follow your journey, and you have articulated yourself so well. I'm still coming to terms with my own AuDHD (I only found out less than 2 years ago), and your perspective (as well as other content creators) have been helpful in making me feel less alone. Burnout is hard, and I'm glad you have some good strategies to help you survive and ease the intensity of it. Perimenopause is such a treat, right (insert eye-rolling). So many physical aspects to it that you don't know about until you experience them. Why isn't this taught as naturally as puberty? I don't know which emotions are hormonal, which are side effects of a medication I'm taking, which are genuine signs to pay attention and fix something, which are my usual ups and downs, which are a result of me ruminating and catastrophising. Something that's helping me settle when I need to is reading novels from the library (in the daytime, in addition to always reading fiction on my Kindle to help my brain slow down and sleep). All the best with taking care of your needs during this busy and overstimulating time of year!
@@vanessaprestoncreative Thanks Vanessa, I'm eye-rolling with you. When the medical profession gaslight us because of their own lack of understanding, it's a whole other level of eye-rolling.

Got my aspie diagnosis at 60 yrs. My stomach and metabolic system has been upset all my life and I have adverse and often diametrically opposed reactions to drugs and any active substances, like being aggravated by calming tea. Quite a few professionals are starting to ask if a lot of neurodivergence might actually be a dysregulated metabolism. Dr William Walsh for instance, a psychiatrist with his own institute for research, found that of 3000 patients with Asperger diagnosis, 96% had a mutation on the MTHFR gene that codes for lots of metabolic processes. Also the Harvard psychiatrist Chris Palmer is thinking in this direction. Worth a watch.
@@amemabastet9055 Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm not surprised by the stats. Living in a neurotypical world with all those expectations is traumatic and has to affect our nervous systems. Neurodivergence is a different operating system and in my opinion causes the dysregulation, not the other way around.
@@LateDiagnosed The interesting thing is that a lot of functions in our bodies are conducted through the DNA of all the critters in the GI tract. We humans don't have enough DNA to explain what our bodies do. It would seem the bacteria is an integral part of what it is to be human. We couldn't survive without them. I don't have any sources for this, but the pattern emerging is that this is a very complex system that is not yet fully discovered and understood. It's very hard to decide what is cause and what is effect in many instances.
Love it. I'm gluten and lactose free too (and a dozen more 'frees') and food isn't easy. I also cook for my family, so I may cook 1-3 different dinners each night to accommodate various needs. My comfort foods come and go in waves, and I might eat the same thing once a day for two weeks. Some of my favourites have included: * chicken schnitzel in a toasted pita pocket with sauerkraut * rice with milk and sugar * rice with a splash of soy sauce and maple syrup, topped with chicken and a token vegetable or two * shaved roast beef from the deli with lettuce on a gf toasted pita bread * 'pizza' made on (you guessed it) gf pita bread, with whatever leftover meat we have or BBQ chicken
@@vanessaprestoncreative That's so hard to have to do 1-3 different dinners each night. I love the sound of the shaved roast beef one! Might have to try that. Thanks!
We can definitely be hard on ourselves and overthink what it means if others are not responding or have responded in certain ways. I was doing this last night in fact. Can I just say, I love your laugh. It brings a smile to my face every time I hear it!
@@tracywilliams9956 Awww thanks Tracy 😊
I heard that are grains have changed , also that spelt is way better
@@marcellavlooijen3605 Grains have changed over the years in the manufacturing processes. Anything closest to their original form is definitely better for you but with coeliac disease, all gluten should be avoided. The consequences to not eating a gluten free diet can be deadly with a much higher risk of getting cancer.
❤
I am 73 and late diagnosed. I relate to all of those. Going gluten free was absolutely life changing, and delayed prcessing has been my cryptonite. I have above average intelligence, but often have appeared stupid to some co workers and supervisors. It hasnt been easy but my ability to hyper focus and stick with a task has compensated for my delayed processing.
@@cherylyoke4872 Delayed processing is such a hard one. Yay for hyperfocus. Just be careful not to overdo it and burn yourself out. I'll be sharing a cheeky gf easy dinner idea in an upcoming video.

I've heard IFS and ACT are better for neurodivergent people. There are a bunch of experiential therapies as well. Tori Olds has a good summary on her youtube channel
For me, getting up early and going for a 90-minute walk started having a massive positive effect for me. Each day, I'd get up a little earlier and I noticed a huge change in my day. Now I get up at 5AM (before the day breaks) - that helps me "ease" in to my day (if that makes sense). And I've now converted my 90-minute walk into a walk/jog. No pressure on myself, but the extra exertion has been excellent. I get home, have a shower and can start work immediately. And I always start my work day with one of the bigger/tougher tasks. I find I can flow through the rest of my tasks much more smoothly and get much more done. The next big change I've made was to cut out sugar. OMG, I can't tell you how huge that's been for me. I'm 3 weeks in now. I don't take meds. I dont meditate, because my autistic brain can't do it. But, exercise and a sugar-free day has been a massive step for me. Noticing changes in my body with all that walking and getting more work done each day means I look forward each morning to the exercise and the tough task I challenge myself with each morning. The dopamine hit when I complete the task is beautiful. Thanks for your videos. It's great to hear from other autistics and ADHD'rs out there.
@@kindbunch That's so awesome! I need to do better in that area myself. You are inspiring! I know how hard those changes are to do. Thanks so much for sharing!

I found your channel yesterday and it feels like I've found a new friend ... someone with an experience I can relate to. We even grew up in the same town (not PNG, though I did visit the highlands as an adult). I'm finally awaiting my diagnostic appointment, at age 49, wondering if it's safe to unmask, let myself be seen and share my excitement about what I'm learning, whilst expecting many friends and relatives would argue that I can't possibly have ADHD and/or Autism. How did you go choosing and asking people to fill in questionnaires about you? I'm only now processing so many parts of my teen and young adult years to understand why I felt the way I did. I can totally relate to you and other women who say it gets harder to cope as we get older. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story!
Hi Vanessa, I'm so glad you found me. Go the Gong! Personally, I didn't have anyone complete the details for me but I did ask my parents some questions when I was doing the pre-appointment questionnaires. I found sharing some of what I found with family and friends to be helpful so please feel free to share my or other videos with them. It's a sharp learning curve but you're not alone. One step at a time and remember to be kind to yourself.
@@LateDiagnosed thanks! Perhaps as an adult I don't have to have others fill in forms about me ... I thought that might be required and I'm relieved to know it might be optional, even though I have people I trust who know me well. Neurodivergence has been one of my special interests for years, as a parent, teacher and friend, and the more I learn the more relief I feel about how much it explains about myself and some people I know. I remembered that I've shared some thoughts about my neurodivergence with a number of people in my life, and I even acknowledged it publicly when I was interviewed for an online article about creativity ... I shared that on my personal and public social media accounts, so I guess I've been more open about it than I remembered when I wrote my first comment. I'd love to share my experiences and thoughts in books or faceless videos, but have to protect the privacy of others in my life (I'm considering the pros and cons of using a pseudonym).
@@vanessaprestoncreative you definitely don't have to have others fill in the forms if you don't want to. Please let me know how it all goes! :)
@@LateDiagnosed thanks, I'll be around for your future episodes and will let you know what happens.

7/7 here. To the letter. It’s like you’re inside my head. Diagnosed two years ago at age 52.
@@linkayton It's a journey of discovery post diagnosis isn't it!
