Women In Pain Nation "Thought of the Day" - Cynthia "Celebrates" Her Pain Anniversary
Anniversaries usually mark a time to celebrate something joyful. But sometimes they pin something that notes loss and grief. Yes, the years have been hard and she still grieves - but there also have been times of growth and new realizations. She encourages all to "celebrate" their pain anniversary in the way that is true to oneself - and to find gratitude in what remains...

Good to see your skin can tolerate cotton denim jeans now, Cynthia!! Honestly you two are an inspiring couple. The way you pull together and cope with all these challenges is an example for us all. Well, I'm hoping you get well enough to get back in the water soon, but yes, affective depression makes us miserable and the only way out is to realize that other people miss you while you are down in that hole of misery and we are trying to get you out of it. Our problem usually is that we're not quite sure what will help. Yes, the body tries to heal itself. Hippocratic medicine always recognized that the physician does not heal the patient, but merely assists the patient in healing. I took a tumble last week landing hard on my butt and broke a rib. Yesterday as the bone was healing to where the pain had dropped from a 6 to 3, I was stretching a bit and figured out that when I fell, my belt buckle had rammed my rib, causing the fracture. Oftentimes this learning process of explaining what is happening, plays a huge role in our recovery. We become self-protective when we know the cause of harm. It's when we're clueless what might go wrong next that we end up in stark terror. The most important lesson I ever learned about that was from two sources: Never tell yourself what you should feel. Whatever you feel now, is your starting point. It's not really possible to "move on" from how you feel, unless you let those feelings teach you about yourself. Yes, sometimes that puts us in a dark and frightening place. But staying ignorant or following some con artist who pretends to know all the answers, will not illuminate the darkness. We only begin to see--or feel--our way around those dark places, when we explore them and learn what we can, So I don't think of your suffering as a waste. Not in the slightest. It is a learning opportunity that can teach others. Hang in there, folks, and keep loving. You will inspire many with your example.

Thank you for addressing this rarely discussed issue. That point of hopelessness is so dismal and frightening. I do my best to just stay in the day, or sometimes just endure hour by hour. Somehow, you'll make it through.

This message badly needed to be sent. If an ailment is invisible (and most are), it is isolating to the person who has it. We get better results in therapy if we can communicate freely about what is going on. Most psychosomatic illness results from physical ailments not being taken seriously and the person gaslighted when they try to speak of it. Well, Lincoln freed the slaves. Nobody owns us. Nobody has authority to gaslight us and command us to suffer. But frequently the patient does not see any choices to leave the abuse behind. So what starts as a minor treatable ailment is kept hidden, and worsens, while fear harms the patient'z mental state. My disease is not all in my head. Much of it is in the warped minds that want to abuse me!! Thanks for producing this narrative feature.

I’m so sorry 😢 for your pain you are going thru. I think 🤔 I was connect with you because I’m going thru the same thing. Unfortunately, I got Shingles about 3 years ago. I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow it was so excruciatingly painful 😓. Then I just about a month ago started to break out in Itchy spots all over my body. I went to a doctor 👩‍⚕️ but she didn’t even get close to me to do an exam! She told me I had sensitive skin and it was bug bites. I thought 💭 it might be monkey 🙉 pox cause I have a degree 📜 in biology 🧫. But then I realized after doing my own research 🧐 it was the Shingles coming back. They should have vaccinated 💉 me For it afterwards but they didn’t even suggest it. I’m a 🇺🇸 US Air Force Veteran and I definitely 💯 have the worst medical 🏥. Thank you 🙏 for letting me vent here. They don’t care 🤷‍♀️ if I’m in pain.

I’m so sorry hon & I’ve been there. Try to find the bright spots in every single day. Even simple things like a butterfly or hummingbird flying near the window, the live of those closest to you including your pets, the good work you do despite terrible pain/what a gift it is to help others. Those are the things that kept me going when I felt darkness all around me. And there’s my HOPE ring that I’ve worn for about 15 years now. It’s symbolic but meaningful to me, and sometimes just looking at it made me feel a tiny bit better knowing hope is always with me. Golden to the things that are meaningful to you. And try to be gentle with yourself knowing your body IS healing itself even if it’s hard to see right now.

Thank you Katie and Cynthia. I felt bereft of creativity initially, as my pain prevented me from painting or making jewelry as I once did. But coloring was a soothing substitute. And cooking has long been a creative outlet for me.

I have a kitty that ive had for 19 years! Her name is Lauren Faith Smith...lol. I got her after having my 1st miscarriage. She stays with whoever is sick in our house. My husband had surgery & she stayed next to him in his home hospital bed until he recovered. She mostly now stays with my 15 yr.old son. Theyre best buds! Whenever I go to the beach or hiking in Los Angeles, the breathtaking views remind me the world is beautiful and bigger than myself. It’s a reminder we are all so privileged to be here on this planet, at this exact moment. Our generations are the most advanced in the HISTORY OF HUMANITY. How cool is that? Every day matters and we see it in nature how precious life is.

I went gluten free for three years. Didn't help the pain or any other aspect of my health. Not one bit. I'm glad I tried it, but glad to be free of that restriction. I love Pop Tarts! That said, I eat much less gluten than the average American. I've learned to appreciate alternate carbohydrate sources (sweet potatoes, quinoa, oats, buckwheat).

So sorry guys! Hope you're better very soon. Last year my husband (caretaker) was losing his vision. The doctors recommended cataract surgery, but weren't sure how much it would help. Neither of us could drive at that point. It was frightening to think of us both being disabled. Fortunately, the cataract surgery was a success. He still has some vision issues which may worsen in the future, but for now it's all manageable.

I so relate! I've had to accept that "it is better to receive than give."😁 But truly, I've had to learn to accept. And I try to be creative in my giving: cooking a favorite dish or two, finding something unique online, a special card. Even little things can be very meaningful and appreciated.

Love this Cynthia, John and Zan! I have a Tibetan Spaniel mix who also has a chronic pain condition and a limp, just like me! We are chronic together. He isn't a lap dog but is always in the same room with me. His little throaty breaths soothe me. Just like you, caring for a pet helps me get out of my own head, and out of my house .. for our daily walks. Stay strong dear. You are precious. ❤

Thanks, John. Beautifully expressed. This is a problem not just with caretakers, but with potentially all who interact with those in pain. If they can't help resolve the pain, they are left frustrated, and that all too often translates into blaming the person for their condition, or distancing themselves altogether. Acceptance of limitations is the key to healthy relationships.

Thank you for this poignant share, Cynthia. When I've hit these low points, my husband Chris says, can you do it for another hour? Sometimes I just have to slow time down that much. I also remind myself that though I cannot go on, I must and will. Also, "This too shall pass." Unlikely as that sounds, the situation or the mood or both will eventually improve.
