I love explaining songs to people so here we go Part 1 Pay attention to all the sweets alex turner mentions, pick'n'mix, strawberry lace, gobstopper, these are metaphors for sweet actions the girl he's talking to has done, however, we are warned that she may not be as sweet as we think hence "You're mistaken if you're thinking I haven't been called 'cold' before" so she may be giving Alex mixed signals. When Alex says "Your past-times consisted of the strange and twisted and deranged and I love that little game you have called "Crying Lighting" and how you like to aggravate the ice cream man on rainy afternoons" to me this lyric is saying she spends her time talking to a lot of men, she plays a game called "crying lighting" you can interpret this game as you'd like but to me it's her toying with the men's emotions for fun like a game. When he talks about the "ice cream man" notice he mentions another sweet, I think that the "ice cream man" is the man she toys with, "on rainy afternoons" or in other words on days she has nothing better to do, on dull days. TLDR: Alex uses a lot of metaphors for things, the lady he's talking to like toying with men's emotions for fun, she does it for entertainment. (I forgot to mention how when he says he loves her "game" he enjoys chasing her for her affection.) Part 2: "The next time I caught my own reflection it was on its way to meet you" I imagine him looking into a car mirror on his way to her house or wherever she is. "Thinking of excuses to postpone" he's starting to dislike her "game". "You never looked like yourself from the side but your profile could not hide the fact you knew I was approaching your throne" He may be talking about how she never looks at him directly but I'm not too sure, however, I do think he means she's not very good at hiding the fact she's excited for him to come over. When he says "your throne," I think he views her as someone with high authority, someone whos in control, someone who views themselves as someone who sits on a throne. "With folded arms, you occupied the bench like toothache, stood and puffed your chest out like you've never lost a war" When he says toothache, I believe he's referring to all of the previous sweets he mentioned, what happens when you eat too many sweets? You get toothaches! He's saying he's spent so much of his time with her that it's starting to cause him emotional pain. When he mentioned her puffing her chest out I think he means she knows she has power, this also refers back to the throne line, a king or queen never losing "wars". When he says "And though I try so not to suffer the indignity of a reaction, there was no cracks to grasp or claw" he's trying to avoid giving her what she wants, a reaction. But as the lyrics say "there was no cracks to grasp or claw" he gave her one anyways. Now it repeats the lines about her "game" but notice how now he says hate, he hates that little game called crying lighting. Also, see how he says "icky man" Alex was once the "ice cream man" someone who gave her what she wanted but now as the "icky man" he's trying to avoid that and it's making her upset. "Uninviting, but not half as impossible as everyone assumes, you are crying lighting" This line confused me still but I think he's saying she's not reaching out to him as much as she used to. however the line "not half as impossible as everyone assumes, you are crying lighting" has me wondering to this day. And in the last part, he repeats that he hated the game, he's done playing, "Your past times consisted of the strange, twisted and deranged" again mentioning that the way she supplies herself with entertainment is strange, twisted, and deranged. TLDR: Alex starts to realize he's being toyed with, and he breaks free from her "game", the lady playing the "game" was upset Alex stopped playing. I loved explaining this song, I hope this explanation helps! This is just how I interpret this song the way you do may be different but after I analyzed the lyrics forever this is what My brain came up with. :)

There's this woman and he's attracted to her but, she also appears cold. He still gives her a chance and goes out with her. He then realises that she's manipulative and likes to play games, however, she's not "half as impossible as everyone assumes [she is]". Regardless, he likes her games at first, plays along but, he gets tired of it and "hates" it later.
