    as long as each fish gets a few flakes with each feeding all is good. just feed whatever they can eat in a few minutes and you can feed twice a day. there really is no set way to do it. when people eat sometimes we eat a little sometimes we eat a lot. lol

    Yeah big tips here, your fish can easily go in-between days of feeding when theyre healthy especially. Also with those big goldies in there you should drop a gravel substrate about 3 inches deep with some sand sprinkled in and some easy plants then throw in some pond snails or bladder snails as they will feed the goldfish when their eggs hatch continuously. Your bubbler might be a bit powerful too, im sure youre adding water every few days so i would get an aquarium hood with lights.

    In my opinion you definetely need to reduce feeding a lot. And I am a heavy feeder. Less amount per feeding and longer time between feeding. Fish that do not come to the surface when you enter the room is definetely overfed.

      I had to raise and lower the string when the plant moved or the water level moved. Did not work for me but I’ve seen it done just a different type of hydroponic system than mine. When I go to rock wool I will revisit hanging the plant.

    The goldfish may eat the roots! My wife's goldfish are eating the roots of her plants.

    • @timothygarrow
      @timothygarrow 6 місяців тому

      Yes I have noticed that the fish eat all my roots😂. I saw someone grow a tomato in a fish tank and I was inspired. With the 2 plants I have in the fish tank now I started with a very large potted plant. I picked them up from Lowe’s and rinsed off the soil the best I could but they had a great root system. And they have done great for a couple years the fish are fine the plants are good. I think they have less roots than when they started 2 years ago😂. I tried putting seedlings and the flowers and some other small plants but they were not happy with having their roots eaten. So now I’m going back to my original idea of a separate tank still using the fish water for fertilizer with supplemental hydroponic fertilizer added. It’s a tough balancing act of fertilizer but tell your wife to try something that has a bigger root system the fish love it.

    The white and black foam is “mechanical” foam. The white being coarse and the black being fine. Mechanical, biological and chemical being the 3 types of filtration in your filter.

      I removed the carbon foam from my fx4 and put filter floss and carbon media in a secondary HOB filter which I maintain weekly to keep the water clear. I also ordered a prefilter from pothocarry on Etsy and it’s made my fx4 much easier to maintain. Every 6 months I will open the FX4. Other than that it’s just take off the intake filter foam and rinse it.

      It shows it in the full length video except when I make it into a short it shrinks the display. I blame this on UA-cam. However I will do my best to resolve this issue on my next short. I will do better at capturing the scene in the dead center of the camera. Thank you for reminding me.

    • @timothygarrow
      @timothygarrow Рік тому

      That definitely crossed my mind but I really want to make sure that no matter what size the plant stock gets that this will work so if it is a tree (or whatever I’m trying to grow) it will work the pool noodle would definitely float for the right size plant and it wouldn’t squish the stock again for most vegetables but I want a system that works for any plant. But thanks for watching and for any advice. My first year I grew a tomato and i didn’t know about the noodle I used tape and a hole in the lid of a bucket that worked but the stock got wet and sometimes when it got heavy fell in the bucket so this year hanging seems to work

  • @joesteadman343

    Definitely use leca so the root system has something to latch onto. Not necessary but aquaponic plants seem to fo better and grow stronger when they have something to grab onto so the plant can stand tall. Yes you will get solids from plant roots and plants and it goes suspended in the water colum or sinks to the bottom. If it's an aquaponics system with a fish tank you should already have a filter or 2 in the system. If you're setting water out to age it so you can throw it in the tank you'd probably fo good with a hang on the back filter or a sponge filter. They even have powerhead/electricity driven sponge filters now. I think the brand is AQQA sponge filters.

    • @timothygarrow
      @timothygarrow Рік тому

      Leca? I will look into it. I saw your comment so I ordered some rock wool. The bigger plant is doing fine but it had a healthy root system when I bought it. The baby squash are not feeling it. As far as the ammonia removal I do have a sponge filter but that’s just turning the ammonia into nitrate which is great for the plants but I’m still having to throw it away after the plants use it. I want to put it back into fish tank. Do you think another filter would help remove the nitrate. I was thinking more plants or a bigger plant might absorb the nitrate.

    Why are you tossing out perfectly good sponges that are loaded with beneficial bacteria? Take them out, gently squeeze them in a bucket of tank water and put them back in the FX4.

    • @timothygarrow
      @timothygarrow Рік тому

      I am learning. At first I didn’t read the instructions and I was just cleaning them and putting them back. This was an annual replacement but I found out from some college studies etc that you should replace them at least once a year and only clean them every 3 months so I appreciate your comment it got me thinking maybe I am removing the beneficial bacteria too often so now I am only cleaning them every three months instead of every week. I will still be replacing them every 6 months per instructions and some studies done

    • @patrickgreene1462
      @patrickgreene1462 Рік тому

      @Aquaponics World , it's your filter and honestly, there's no one way to do things in this hobby. I don't Crack the lid on any of my canisters unless I notice a slowing in flow. The sponges in my fx's haven't been replaced since I bought them about 3 and a half to four years. There's literally nothing published to scientifically support them needing to be changed. I certainly wouldn't go by a manufacturer simply because they'll say anything to get more of our money. 😉

    If you're trying to Jumpstart the cycle in an aquarium you don't do it with another tanks water. The beneficial bacteria don't live in the water column. If you know someone with a tank. Take a bucket to their house. Put some tank water in it. Them have them clean one of their sponges out in the bucket. Take it home and pour it in your tank. The muck from your friends sponges will go into your filter and your substrate and instantly cycle your tank. The tank will be cloudy for a few hours but after that you can add fish. Obviously you can't go crazy and add a bunch but 5 little fish won't hurt a thing. Then don't clean anything for a few months. Just do weekly water changes. To monitor ammonia you can buy little things made by seachem I think they're called safety alert. They stick on the glass inside your tank. When ammonia is at zero ppm is yellow. If it goes above that it changes color. After a few months you can start a cleaning schedule. Do NOT clean your filters monthly. It takes a filter a month to recover from a cleaning biologically. If your cleaning monthly it never recovers fully. Also don't let your filter go to long. This will depend on the load on the filter. Your filter only works at maximum efficiency both mechanically and biologically at a certain amount of bio film build up in the media. A new or freshly clean filter doesn't catch all particles till it get a film built up. Likewise if it's plugged up from not cleaning often enough water is reduced and bypasses your media. Basically your just pumping dirty unfiltered water. The sponge in the outer portion of the fx model filters is 30ppi. This isn't a mechanical filter. It's biological filtration. It won't catch smaller particles until it gets a bio film. They blow right through it.

I haven’t had the money to shop for bare root plants and I was afraid to put it in the tank with the soil and fertilizer that it came with. I just bought it in a pot and transplanted it. So far that is all I have but I have big plans I want to build an aquaponics farm. I want talapia and fruits and veggies. Did you get your monstera bare root?
