Perfect simple way for camera nerds to display your lenses
My buddy @NigelBarros wanted a different way to display his camera lenses so we came up with a simple design and built this. For the design we just went with a three tiered display kind of like a birthday cake and for the finish I wanted it to look somewhat distressed like its been around for a while. I think we nailed it but, let me know what you think!

I just check in my region (Charlotte, NC), they are advertised on facebook market place for about $30, the larger ones for about $40 and the "bespoke" ones for about $80-$150. For something that cheap, the only way you can realistically make money out of it is to batch a ton of them. Then you make, like 10-15 at a time; properly batched you probably can make 15 in a day. Now, this is a seasonal item, you have to make them in the pre-season to hope selling them in the season. And then you probably need to either slash prices to get rid of inventory or keep them for a year and swallow the storage cost.

I started selling cedar planter boxes in April and I did not do too bad selling them on Facebook Marketplace. That being said the sales pretty much dried up right after Mother's Day in May. I had orders for 10 boxes the week before Mother's day and I think I may have sold 4 in all the time after that. These are definitely a seasonal item so timing is critical.

Think outside the planter! The market is oversaturated, but how can you throw your twist in it. Alot of guys don't stain or paint theirs. Get a cheap Harbor Freight paint spayer and use a cheap good size camping tent with ventilation as spray booth. You paint complimentary colors to customer homes. Batch them out in package deals add in paint and labor and see what happens. To be competitive, you gotta add more value. So much value they can't turn it down.

My suggestion? Miter the edges of the top pieces. Also, when starting, don't rely on the internet. Go to craft shows and farmer's markets. If done earlier in the year, say... around Mother's Day, they'll sell. And they'll sell fast. Timing is everything, right? I mean, here in the upper Midwest, you'll never see a store stock their shelves with swimsuits in Sept/Oct. Why would they? It's beginning to get colder and, in a few months, the lakes will be frozen. Timing is everything. We're tactile creatures, and if we can handle something, we're much more likely to spend money on it. As far as online goes, it takes time to build an audience (or enough sales to make other potential customers feel "safe" about buying from you). So, time your products, pay the extra $5, or whatever, to "push" it into people's feeds, and... time your products.

Making money woodworking is all about targeting the right customers. Planters may not sell in your area or where your selling. I make and sell equipment for honeybees. I build equipment out of a material that is hard to come by as well. My area has a great deal of beekeepers and not many bee supply stores. So I do a fair amount of business. It's not always about what is "hot" or "popular" if that's the case there's probably lots of people flooding the market with this item. Try to find a niche that needs to be filled. You can build bird feeders and planters and such and you can sell those things more than likely. Just keep trying and you will find what your market wants. Don't ever give up just adjust until you find what works for you.

Sometimes, only certain products will sell at certain times of the year. When I go to craft fairs, Santa's workshops, farmers markets, or other similar venues, I see many folks who are selling wood craft products. After a time, I've discovered that, unless it's something new, unique, or in high demand, many crafts just don't sell very well due to the saturation of available products. In the end, it's usually the things with the lowest prices that are most likely to sell.

You're forgetting the one phrase that's repeatedly said over and over.. it takes time to build your business. It's absolutely true. Build clients, word of mouth, recognition, these things take take time. That's why small business are so hard. Some get frustrated because their stuff doesn't fly off the shelves from day one and give up day 30. lol. Keep building your inventory and also you can't really be a one trick pony. The more selection you have will peak interest. If you're going to do planters, make sure you do some furniture that compliments it. It's my experience that if people buy one item, they'll look for other stuff to go with it. Offer package deals too. I started out on Facebook and built two planters, a bench, a simple exterior coffee table, a couple of smaller benches to put plants in, a couple of decorative birdhouses and an exterior wooden flag. I figured if nothing sold, we'd have some great additional deck stuff built for cheap. I took photos of everything separately, and photos of things together, moved stuff around the yard for different settings and looks. I built to order and it was slow at first but gradually built up.

Here's an idea for you. Look at the going prices on wood storage cabinets (tools, map/drawings, and library catalogs). They tend to command a premium price. See estate sales, auction starting price, Marketplace & eBay. What about taking an old but quality dresser ($20-$60 or less) and convent it into a storage cabinet. You divide the deep dresser drawers into 2 or 4 drawers. A dresser starting out with 5 drawers may have 10-14, 16 or more drawers. You likely will be able to use most of the materials from the original drawer to reproduce the smaller drawers. Is it worth it?
