砂山 Sunayama: Sand Dune | Robin Tamura Shakuhachi
One of my favorite minyo. Written by Hakushu Kitahara and Shimpei Nakayama in 1919, the lyrics are actually super sweet. Here’s a translation:
The sea is rough.
Over there lies Sado Island.
Sparrows, chirp, chirp!
It's already getting dark.
Everyone, call out, call out!
The stars are out!
When it gets dark, the only sound
is the waves crashing at the dunes.
The sparrows are scattering,
the wind's picking up again.
Everyone is scattering,
There's no one to be seen.
Let's go home, let's go home,
pushing ourselves through the fields of silverberries.
Goodbye, sparrows,
see you again tomorrow!
Goodbye, sea,
see you again tomorrow!

霧海箎 Mukaiji: Flute on the Misty Sea | Robin Tamura Shakuhachi
Переглядів 442Місяць тому
This piece is one of the *Koten Sankyoku*, the three original shakuhachi compositions, often considered the oldest shakuhachi pieces in existence, though this claim is debated. Legend has it that a monk named Kikuchi had a dream in which he was floating on the ocean, gazing at the moon. Suddenly, a dense fog enveloped him, and within this mist, he heard the haunting sound of a shakuhachi. Upon ...
虚鈴 Kyorei: Empty Bell | Robin Tamura Shakuhachi

Kyorei is one of the oldest honkyoku. It represents the sound of a bell rung by Fuke, a Zen monk who wandered about 9th century China. Legend says that a monk named Chohaku, inspired by Fuke’s teaching, composed Kyorei to imitate Fuke’s style of Zen. Kyorei was brought to Japan in the 19th Century by a monk named Gakushin. "Tsuki no Sabaku" (月の砂漠), translated as "Desert under the Moon," is a well-known Japanese folk song composed in the early 20th century. The lyrics were written by Kōsaku Yamada, and the music was composed by Masao Kato. The song evokes a dreamlike, mystical atmosphere, describing a beautiful and serene desert landscape illuminated by the moonlight. The imagery in the song paints a picture of a ...

Переглядів 2032 місяці тому
"Tsuru no Sugomori," translated as "Nesting of the Cranes," is a classic piece in the shakuhachi repertoire. It has a lot of intricate and dynamic phrases that evoke the sounds and movements of cranes. The piece uses a range of techniques, such as fluttering and trills, to mimic bird calls and create a vivid auditory landscape. This makes it a technically challenging piece that requires a high ...

Daiwa-Gaku is a piece composed by the great Shakuhachi Master of the 20th Century, Jin Nyodo. The piece is of the few that have been composed in the modern era, and have been accepted into the ranks of the great traditional Honkyoku. While Daiwa Gaku literally means "the great piece"; it also speaks to the four seasons of the year, the four times of the day, and the four stages of a man's life....

"Koten Sugomori" is a traditional shakuhachi piece that belongs to the honkyoku repertoire, which is a collection of original solo compositions for the shakuhachi. The term "Sugomori" can be translated as "Nesting of the Cranes," and the piece is often associated with the imagery of cranes caring for their young and preparing to migrate. I like to think of this piece as the dance of the cranes....

Chūgoku Chihō Lullaby | Robin Tamura Shakuhachi
Переглядів 2124 місяці тому
This beautiful lullaby comes from Okayama prefecture in the Chugoku region in western Japan. So Chugoku does actually not refer to China in this case. Like most Japanese lullabys its kind of sad and haunting, owed to the fact that babysitters in old Japan were often children themselves who were forced into labor. A being the first sound of Aum sometimes spelled Om. 手向 Tamuke: Offering - Robin Tamura Shakuhachi

Here’s a piece I have a long relationship with. I started learning this ahead of the curriculum when my grandmother died because I wanted to play it for her funeral. Tamuke literally means hands folded in prayer and is meant as an offering to the departed souls. It can be a very sad piece, it can celebratory, whatever feels right to you. Back then when my senpai Alejandro died I played it for h...

Hi Robin, what’s the name of the pro flute maker please?
@@jeanmtiger it’s Reiko, but I don’t think he’s around anymore. I recommend Yozan Hikiji.
Saving this one. Thank you for the educational info’s the description.
How much should I expect to pay for a professional Shakuhachi?
Around 3 - 5k if it's new.
❤❤❤
huh, great :)
Great! Thanks for sharing :)
Not Just beautiful music. One of the best displays of music being played as an expression of peace, of mindfulness, of being in the moment, and living zen. Watching and listening to this is a lesson and a blessing. May you have blessings in full measure and a cup of peace overflowing endlessly. Thank you.
Beautiful sound !
Great flute and Great Player!
Super lindo! You have such a nice mix of playing as written and making it your own. Very nice!
Nice sound . Who’s the maker of you flute, please ? 🙏

What a nice tone! And you are finding a very nice personal way of playing it! Beautiful!
Nice. I'll go play it now
Very nice! Good motivation too, as I just can’t get the vibe of this lullaby and tend to practice it less…so thank you!
Fun video, and what a nice flute! Oddly it reminds me of tea reviews (gong fu style). You can almost «taste » the sound of the flute from your descriptions. Thanks for sharing the music too :)
Deep and inspiring playing
awesome performance
The tone are totally different I can see the tone difference
Nice vídeo Robin. TBH, both sound good, but the pro one has more substance and a fuller sound. A good flute should make it easy to play and I noticed how the more expensive/pro flutes allow you to focus more on the music.
I love that version, Robin! Powerful, but rushed. Really great! Thank you!
The sound is magnificent, so deep! I have the same shakuhachi for beginners from Yozan, it is already very good for the price but the professional one has another magnitude ! Enjoy ! 😊🙏
Beautiful soft register!
Those soft kan notes sound sublime on this stick!
Truly spiritually soothing and yet energizing tune 💮 Thank you for delivering this art
Very nice rendition of this difficult song.
Excellent❤
Don't add any vibrato.
tender, mournful, piercingly human. thank you
exquisite and subtle tone in the service of real feeling…
Thank you 🙏
Just started learning this one! It's hauntingly beautiful
Goosebumps...
Sounding so good!! 🎉
Agreed! And how lucky am I to have this now as an audio to practise the piece. Thanks Robin!
