Some serious unique moves you don't see as much, lots of mainstream moves we learned as kids. What is the Dance Ensembles name? This is great footage to use and teach the youth old/new moves to try at home.
Even Louis XIV couldn't display such arrogance. It would have been better to stop the documentary at 58:22.
The king who popularised ballet..
Loved the documentary. Although ballet originated in Italy it became popular throughout Europe by the French. Yes, they highjacked & perfected.
ja pierdzielę jakie to prymitywne, chyba amerykańskie
impeccable.
the ballet was brought by Catherine de Medici
1:09:35 As a trained professional dancer, I have been watching lots of dance (plenty live and online) for my whole life. Dare I say, that is one of the most beautiful duets I’ve ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal choreography and performance. Hopefully “The King Dances” does more live performances in the future.
Beautiful, I love baroque dancing I play baroque on my TV and am reading Maître à Danser
I find it sad that in western cultures it is only those with money could afford to take ballet lessons and afford the shoes at approximately $100.00 a pair and as a ballerina needs new ones constantlt. Thats why Russia produces some of the finest bllerinas in thee world today: state funded, the girls atary at 9 yrs, must meet the body standard type, small head, long neck, arms and legs . The teaching is very strict, and only then 3 in 100 will become prima ballerinas. Wonderful performance by the dancers, costumes and lighting. Wonderful performance by the Royal Birmingham Ballet. 😊 1:25:14
Booking my flight to train at the Paris Opera Ballet RN. Yes, it is awful creating this big elaborate thing, and they're not having any dancers to do it as one of the most horrible things and choreographer could ever go through, besides giving your choreographer to little children and watching it in horror as they brutally stab it to death on stage. You choreographed that? Its beautiful! I think you would have put louis to shame lol! Well done! Bravo!
Visually stunning performance and so informative on the evolution of ballet and the right of passage of male and female ballet dancers. Thank you so much for this wonderfuul share!
Ballet is Italian not French.

I'm surprised that no mention of the art form of the "Masque" was made in this documentary, as it preceded Louis XIV by at least a century. A masque was a play performed by nobles, usually on a mythological theme, which included both song and dance. An excellent example is Ben Jonson's "Comus" (1618). Since it was considered inappropriate for the nobility to portray vulgar or evil characters, the form often included an "Anti-Masque", performed by professionals, so that a villain could give interest to the piece. To give all the credit to "The Sun King" seems to me disingenuous.
The lady dancing to the Passacaille from Lully's 'Armide' at 44:42 is amazing. I wish we could have seen the whole performance.
Very interesting. Thank you. 😊
Unlike the majority of people who watch this documentary, I don’t feel much admiration for Louis. The opulence of Versailles utterly oppresses me….the ceremonial “public” rooms are really quite ugly, as is everything made solely to impress and intimidate. Louis’ epic self indulgence is really shameful to me, not admirable, bc he never gave even one thought to his least subjects who led really horrible lives bc they weren’t even regarded as human beings, the poorest and most wretched peasants in European history. I believe that the outward opulence of Versailles is a reflection of the fear and doubt Louis felt inside at the time he ordered it to be built, in exact proportions to his soul’s emptiness, bc he only thought about how large and opulent he could be, not about how wonderful his people and country could have been. Thus, I am not at all surprised by the switch to religion at the end of Louis’ life, when he seemed to eschew the monstrous excesses of his life. So, admire on! I love ballet, and am happy about it’s origins….but you can all have the rest!
I agree with you. It's disgusting. His mother and his guardian literally made him believe the sun rose and shone in his backside.
The only reason i love him is for ballet and the masterpiece of Versailles. Of course he’s a monarch so he sucks lmao.
That was a bit snobby of them.
Was Louis XIV gay?
No
@@ReformedCrusader thank you for letting me know.
His father was suspected to be gay and his brother Phillip was gay. Louis XIV was definitely straight.
Despite what is said round about 28:02, "At the height of the Blitz, the Germans were launching over 100 V1 bombs at London every day" - the first V1 bomb (the Doodlebug) wasn't launched till 1944. The Blitz ended in May 1941.
💥 L.XIV
Неймовірно. Дякую велике за те що ви є
Maybe J.Depp will be This one HE is a king already in France speaks French the king who dances Louis 14th
This is what “ballet” looked like in the ballroom and social setting but on the theatrical stage it was just as big and varied as it is today. Today’s ballet is not a derivative of this, but rather this is a derivative of the original theatrical art of ballet.
He was the problem with not taking care of his people!! Yes he brought ballet. But the Gold and that palace did not need to be so extravagant. Quit blaming Marie Antoinette.
But that palace is so cool
@@ReformedCrusaderThe whole point of Versailles was to preserve the French monarchy against rebellion, and in that it ultimately failed. The next King (Louis XV) continued the excesses (mistresses, parties with fireworks, etc. aren't cheap) instead of following the austerity measures needed to get the French economy back on track. Supporting the American Revolutionary Wars was another stupid waste of French resources, the Americans who had been supported by the French monarchy didn't support Louis XVI when he was overthrown.
you are so right. He was a pompous ass hole who only cared for himself
Not only ballet but fortifications, sewers, roads, commerce, sciences, discoveries. His talent is to have surrounded himself with the best. His mistake was to have sacrificed the people, just as Louis XVI did later.
Such beautiful people! Love it!
Who is this narrator/choreographer? You should have credited the narrator and given more details about this video.
Such a pity that every time Mazarin is mentioned they played the theme music from The Godfather. is this ignorance or casual racism? Nonetheless Mazarin gave France the Louvre, and, as the de facto ruler of France, played a crucial role in establishing the Westphalian principles that would guide European states' foreign policy and the prevailing world order. Some of these principles, such as the nation state's sovereignty over its territory and domestic affairs and the legal equality among states, remain the basis of international law to this day .. and so important today ... just ask Putin ... Mazarin was so much more than a gangster ... and this speaks volumes about the person who decided to associate him with the theme from The Godfather ,,,
An intriguing and so educational documentary. The costuming in the final dance is stunning. I don't find that the music adds to the performance, it's dull and cliche - "music for a ballet." The lighting tones and colors are very well done, it pulls me in.
Louie xiv was the one and the only one⚜️⚜️⚜️
Неможливо зупинитись переглядати цю надзвичайну красу! Пишаюсь своєю Україною і тими людьми, що поширюють її неймовірну культуру😍💙💛
totally not what i expected lol

The Sun King's father Louis XIII already composed ballet music, which originated in Italy...so the title of this documentary is nonsensical, to put it mildly.
This is good. Smh... the ending surprise performance.
'Tis a pity that a citation for the magnificent Spanish Renaissance song entitled: "Todos Los Bienes Del Mundo" (roughly translated: "All the Goods/Treasures of the World"), was not included in the credits at the beginning of the ballet, in which the composer co-opts the theme for the beginning and end of the drama. (see: ua-cam.com/video/yEcKWqQWpeU/v-deo.html ) Never-the-less, stunning choreography and dancing! Bravo!
Thanks
Silly fellows
A great documentary despite the use of TACKY music. Luis XIV has nothing to do with HEAVY METAL or 1970´s GAY DISCO. Cheap and lowers the value of what otherwise could have been a very interesting documentary.
Agree
Вау... 😁😁😁 Знов пародія ... постановка Вантуха ?!
Precious!! Invaluable documentary of our beloved Royal Ballet history!!
