hi im vinia, i just make stuff when i get bored.
10 ArtFight Tips from a Veteran
U wanna go, bro? artfight.net/~sled
yayy my once-a-year upload has come! this time we're talking about Art Fight (Artfight ? ArtFight ? What is the official way to say it ?)... anyway, Art Fight is an art trading game where you are split into teams with ~100,000+ people, 'attack' people with art, and defend your team's honor (and points)! There is a winner in the end, but it's not really competitive, it's just a big, fun art trading event. With the team reveal coming soon, I wanted to talk tips both for noobs and for veterans like myself. Man, I hope the teams are Tropic vs. Arctic as many people have theorized. If so-- Team Tropic all the way, baby!!!!
ok time to list the tips, anyone still here?
1. Have fun!
2. Character Reference Sheets - don't need to be fancy. don't expend too much effort on them, especially if you haven't started yet!
3. Old Art is fine to show, don't be afraid of old art!
4. Stretch your Wrists (or suffer)
5. Experiment with your Art!!!
6. *Try* to thank everyone who draws your guys
7. Keep character biographies / descriptions short, some of us struggle to read!
8. Keep lore short, but definitely have it there. A TLDR (too long didn't read) would work if you want to keep it super super short. if you specifically want lore art you should say that so people know if there's required reading.
9. Use Character Reference Sheets and the thumbnail icons to show off your beautiful guy's personality. (this will help people figure out how to draw your guy)
10. Do artfight for you, not for others. I think this mindset will make you prone to burning out quickly.
Did I really spend half of my video telling you to keep your descriptions short only to write this word soup in my video description? YES! I DID THAT!

i hope everyone is having a pleasant easter, because i'm here suffering.
100 pieces of OC fanart is crazy! that's awesome!
The original: the Looney tunes show
I‘m new to Artfight, but I have a question: I redesigned an OC and made some changes to his style. Can I add the changes to the already existing character profile?
yup! i change my characters' designs all the time, but since it's the same character i use the same page ^^
@@rivli Thanks! I didn't change much anyway, just the colors, because they looked muddy in my first drawing.
Very much a murdock thing
Thx for attacking !!! Btw im dackychan
I did 22 attacks last year (my first year) and boi... It was tough. One of the attacks had SIX fullbodies + a background. This year, I wanted to do more (it's still going, but it's 14th day and I'm on my first attack, since my first dog died on the third day, so I've been pretty down in the dumps) BUT I love art fight SM it's so much fun!!
Thank you for your advice! But yea I'm not sure I'll submit several characters cuz I was still working for an animation I started in March and I only have one character for now 🙁 But I planned to start attacking people when it will be last week of the event 😊
I discovered this video very late, but doing artfight for YOU is so so right. I draw a lot of stuff I usually wouldn't. well, i draw a huge variety of species anyway, however many designs are still different from my usual work in terms of themes and styles. And artfight is so good to push yourself even more. I have that "i improve with every art piece" feeling again that i had lost a bit recently. Its a good event, if you make it fun for you.
My art fight plan was to 1)Make detailed reference sheets for my OCS 2)Then start attacking people But it took me 8 days to realize I don’t wanna fucking draw reference sheets I just wanna draw so I gave up on uploading my characters and will just do attacks for now :D cause I enjoy it
In my side I draw quick overview of my characters then I start drawing attacks during last week of the event
This is my second year and both last year and this year I’ve done paper sketch attacks only, because I know if I did digital art I would burn out very quickly, and the attacks would begin looking bad within maybe the 8th attack. Paper sketches are generally just a very fun way for me to draw and I enjoy it, so that’s what I do for art fight to keep myself having fun instead of burning out :)
I’m going to join art fight next year because I feel like my art isn’t good enough 😢 but I’m watching artfight tips so I’m educated enough!!
@@bbg.... i think you should join whenever you feel like joining! art fight is a great way to improve and also helped me with feeling more confident in art because of how nice everyone is!
PLEASE HELP HOW DO I SUBMIT ANIMATIONS
It needs to be a gif. If it's something like animation meme you should upload it on UA-cam (put the links on your attack)
am looking into art fight cause i want to try it next year!
Its my first year of AF and I was wondering if adding stuff like quotes and relationship details with other published characters helps with outlining a character's personality instead of downright stating their traits without overwhelming someone that goes thru my bios
quotes and relationship details are very helpful to understanding a character! especially for characters you would like to be drawn together. stating traits is always an option, but sometimes adding little bits that imply those traits could better help someone understand that character. like for my character judit, her bio says something like "obsessed with looking mysterious on her train to work" which may just be another way of saying she's somewhat vain, but it allows people to put that trait into a scene- and i've gotten art of it! i've found that stuff like that is great for getting in-character scenes/art :-DDDD i think when someone just lists traits it could be so broad that i'm afraid to put them in a scene and have it be ooc. sorry that was a long response x,D
@@rivli its oki!! thanks a lot for the long response I really liked reading thru it :DD
HELP WHAT IS ART FIGHT PLEASEEE
it’s an art trading event you can find over at artfight.net !! there’s some introductory stuff on the website about page that might help!
Unc!
best video so far, especially the comments! helped a lot for me doing airtight this year the first time!
It was fun thhe first 2 drawings because it was casual. Then u always try to outdo yourself and it feels like a chore xD
I've always wanted to participate in an art fight, they look like so much fun :)
@@markimlem it started yesterday, get in on this!!! it seriously is so much fun ^_^
This isn’t my first year doing Art fight but I’m still pretty new so this has been rlly helpful in giving advice besides the basics!
This is my first art fight and I got advice from someone that people like when you add different details to the persons oc but that doesn’t seem right, is it?
@@Kyle-dj9rt if it’s stylistic details or choices, then i would definitely agree. but if you mean like extra accessories or outfits, i would be sure to check that person’s permissions- a lot of people actually do like stuff like that too though! altering the character’s design itself though would usually be discouraged i think
@@rivli ok! Ty sm!!!
so it's rly fine to just use old art that are more like doodles... say.... pencil doodles with no color?
yup! anything works as long as it's following the site rules!
tip number 3 was actually so helpful or rather eases my anxiety! :D
I will not lie, I almost dropped out with how so many people think it is ok to cheat in artfight. The excuses always rubbed me the wrong way. I plan on not doing much art for artfight, I know my limits.
This is my first year of art fight and I'm so nervous and excited at the same time thank you for the tips!!
This is super helpful! Thanks a bunch ^^ Also GO TEAM SEA FOAM!!
Actually i do feel like im owed a thanks... Like you dont have to start gushing about how much you like the piece but not getting thanked after putting work into drawing someone's character feels like a slap to the face. Its base politeness, whether you like the art or not
@@dustyrose6338 i do agree, and i personally do prefer a comment over a revenge. i don’t think it’s fair to assume everyone is just being disrespectful though, because most of the time they’re not! i’ve not commented on some beautiful art i got in the past because i used to be extremely anxious. i wouldn’t feel owed a response from someone who sees responding as some kind of burden. that’s what i was thinking when i wrote that… you never know what someone may be going through!
Additional tip - in bios PLEASE include things that your character likes/activities they do. It makes it so much easier for the people drawing your character to think of compisitions for the art.
As a fellow art fight veteran (im on my 9th year this year) i agree about leaving up old art in your attacks! I actually really enjoy it as a museum of my improvement because i feel like its a good summary of my improvements over the years.
How fast should I be able to draw
@@anoob6614 i would say take it at your own pace, there’s no rush! just be aware that the event ends on august 1st, so try to finish everything you have planned before then! personally i try to draw 1 attack every day, and then just stop when i don’t feel like drawing anymore
@@rivli rhank you
I haven’t heard of artfight till today, thank god it hasn’t started yet! I’m planning on trying it out, it looks super fun!
Totally not me trying to make ref sheets for my characters before artfight even begins 😅 I got 3/4 done for this year, and I’m almost done with the fourth The remaining 4 will be worked on after this year’s artfight is over Also, thanks for the tips! I find them really helpful!
I've been here for 7 years, this is my 8th, & I've only got 58 attacks ;v; I actually got burnt out last year (only did 8) because for some reason, EVERY YEAR, a month or two before AF, I suddenly want to draw LIKE CRAZY
i wanna do artfight SO bad but I'm scared people won't like my art 😿😿
@@abug1478 i promise you this is NOT something to be scared of in artfight ❤️ everyone is genuinely sooo kind and supportive, the environment is the best!! it really feels like everyone loves everything that gets sent their way- people will be so thankful to get art of their beloved characters 😊 i couldn’t recommend it more, you should give it a try if you’re interested!!!
This will be my first year. I'll treat it like an Introvert thing where I'll draw at least 1 character a day. I hope it won't burn me out or anything.
I plan on doing a big animation for this year, I'm so screwed but I need to lock in.
Everyone I'm on team stardust. I would love if you could follow me. I'm miunya_art and will target the opposite team. :] let's gooo
Nobody attacked me back last year so I'm very discouraged to do it again.
@@moketoveto8843 i would try attacking people who guarantee revenges 100% if you want art, sometimes a new way to play is what you need to find motivation ✨ i hope you participate again eventually, artfight is an amazing experience- it makes me sad to hear when other people are discouraged!
I have 5 days to come up with ref sheets of my characters because I don't have art of them and only found out about art fight today 😭
10 years?! God dammit, soldier! But seriously, what is ArtFight?
@@TheGoblinoid it’s an art trading event you can find over at artfight.net !! there’s some introductory stuff on the website about page that might help!
@@rivli thank you!
artfight is the dark souls of art trades tbh
Thank you!! :D I feel way more prepared for artfight now that my expectations are set accordingly. I've wanted to participate for the last three years but it always seemed way too overwhelming a concept. This year I'll try to participate, even if I only draw one thing :]
Can I do art fight if I’m not very good at drawing? I would like to use it as a change to improve.
@@Raymondd__D everyone of all skill levels is welcome to participate! there’s no such thing as “not good” drawings, so don’t let that weigh you down 💪
@@rivli ok thank you:)
Just followed you on Art Fight! My name is Bishmuth. This will be my 7th year of art fight, so I'm also an oldie! (Technically 8th if you count an account I never used and forgot the user name of before my first art fight) I hate that I'm an adult-adult now (22) and that from here on out I'll have to juggle jobs and stuff 😅 I can't wait to attack you!
@@hannahdeards9652 totally agree as another 22 yo, i just graduated and i’m sad to move in my career path because it means less drawing ;-; but in the past when i’ve had a job i still manage to participate in af as much as i usually do, so who knows!
@@rivli I'm going into the animation industry as a background artist... So I have spent the last year at uni drawing pretty much no characters and I'm really rusty hahah. I have animator friends who do pretty much no art outside their job so I'm always worried I'll end up like that. In my head I'm thinking 'I should spend July working on my portfolio and applying for jobs!' but instead I am doing a month long art fight holiday haha
@@hannahdeards9652 oooh that's a cool job! i've definitely heard from industry people that art is hard to balance as both a hobby and a job- i hope the difference in drawing subjects mitigates that! i've worked as a legal aid for the past few years, but i just got my degree in biochem so i'm not sure if i should get a new job or keep doing law stuff...now i'm like 'ahh whatever i can think about it in august' artfight is more important than my career of course xDD glad to see someone in the same boat!
this is a great video! thank you
This is going to be my first ArtFight so thank you for the tips! I love to create art especially when i get their reactions of it so supporting is a really important thing to show the artist that you appreciate them!

I love your energy and enthusiasm in this video, I haven't watched you before but I just subbed. We need more positivity in the world!! And i was unsure if doing artfight because I dreaded making ref sheets but I'm relieved that you say I can use old art :) 👍
second year here !!! I SECOND HAND THE PART WHERE YOU DO ARTFIGHT FOR YOU!! Last year I only ended up doing a total of *2 attacks!* this year I honestly have started a bit early hoping to get at least 5 out of my system :D although I've noticed I struggle to draw whenever I open my art program,, artblock in denial also, expect an attack yootooba >:D
Thank you so much for those tips! This will be my second Art Fight and last year I started soo motivated and burned out so quickly xD (which sadly was also portrayed in some of the drawings I did...they kept getting worse and worse) Hopefully, this year I wont burn out :)
