I can't be the only one thinking strongly of Woody and this song, as the government gets hot and bothered to round innocent people up. :-(

Dodo Hug and Efisio Contini, two of the greatest Swiss musicians, made a wonderful cover of this song adapted to the seasonal workers (mostly italians) who paid with their blood and sweat to built basically all of Switzerland's infrastructure and were in turn discarded as soon as they were no longer useful. It's worth a listen for any fans of this song!

what a surprise! i am a japanese living in NARA.JAPAN. i listenened this song. many years ago, probably. 60 years ago. i can still sing this song, especially the part of 'good bye my friend, my Rosalita, adios amigos sus a maria, all because the name of deportee. this afternoon. i watched tv and found DNALD trump said. he is going to be strict for depotation. this made me remind of my memory of this song when i was a young teacher. basicakky i like music and liked singing songs in their original languages. and i could understand spanish a bit. it was the days/time of folk songs. i am writing this comment, not for the old memory. i am writing this i am disappointed the result of the president-election. i remember the part of they crossed the mexican boarder.... i visited MANSANILLO in september 2019. thank you for your singing. i really want all the people in the world can live in safe. i met some good memories in MANSANILLO, when i visited a telephone store to ask them to fix my smartphone smartphone. they did it and when i asked the price they smiled and said 'free'! so i was haopy and my smartphone worked right! do you know japan still have the constitution that prohibit to have any weapons. if you are interested in the constitution, find article 9. but the article 9 is now crushed, being destroyed. as long as people have weapons, they/we will fight in wars, because they/we must show, weapons keep them'/us safe. i hate wars! hope we wii some day live without killing each other. i am not a christian, but i say god bless you! SETSUKO

I had to listen to this song. I'd just finished reading an account of what Donald plans to do if he wins. A stomach-churning account of just what those innocuous words "mass deportation" truly mean. This CANNOT happen.

Woody never sang this song - not on record anyway. He wrote it as a poem. From what i understand...Woody was in the hospital already a few years later...a college student found it in Woody's dresser and added music to it.

I was in my 15th summer of life when this song came out in 1976. So many years have passed since then, but I still look back at that time with bittersweet memories. We were poor, hungry. I started smoking pot and experimenting with drugs to numb myself. This song captures so many of my feelings. It is hard to explain .

Yeah I went to a summer camp too, it was run by Pete's brother John Seeger, and that was a song we used to sing regularly too: counselors would lead us in singing it. As poignant for me now as it was when I was ten and first heard it, which was only, oh, fifty or so years ago... It just pushes you over every time you hear it, it's one of those songs. I wonder who's singing with Woody: Pete most likely, plus Cisco H.?

I have never heard of this song, nor the tragedy that caused until about 10 minutes ago. I was randomly on Wikipedia page about a university in boulder , CO called “Naropa University” and yes, I read the entire Wikipedia start to finish lol. I was under the section “notable alumni” and I went to each students own Wikipedia page to see what type of person would go to this type of school lol. I came across a student named Tim Hernandez and read that he had worked to get a memorial built for the victims of 1948 Los Gatos DC-3 crash that killed 32 with the majority being Mexican citizens. The memorial only included the Mexican victims. And I was so shocked I had never heard of such a horrible crash before. On the Wikipedia page for the crash, there is a mention about how these poor victims were disrespected and disregarded simply as “deportees” and there was information about a song called Deportees. And that my friends, is what I love about having so much information at my fingertips. This song is beautifully written! His voice is amazing. Flawless track. Showing this to my husband and daughter when they wake up! Stay blessed y’all!

This song has such bitter sweet memories for me , 15 year old girl living in a dysfunctional family, Meets a boy ( with a fabulous mum ) Love her to bits she looks after me when I became pregnant with her grandson , ❤ even knowing her son didn't treat me with respect, 47 years later still see this wonderful lady, But going through one of the worst times in my life, this song will always stay with me ❤

The original poster said "No copyright infringement intended." Aside from the fact that the copyright has probably expired, I can't imagine for a nanosecond that Woody would have minded. I first heard this song performed by Arlo and Pete Seeger, sometime in the mid-1970's. At the time I didn't understand the backstory. Today, it seems more relevant than ever.

Give a boy a break, give a man a chance Let me sing a song to sing along or clap your hands to And when the music starts, open up your heart Don't you put yourself out, that's not what it's about For the songs that I write in the silence of my bedroom Are coveted and kept a secret, practiced perfect, every one a part of me And so I take the floor to sing my songs to you And if it turns you on, you can sing along Give a boy a break, give a man a chance Let me sing a song to sing along or clap your hands to And when the music starts, open up your heart Don't you put yoursеlf out, that's not what it's about And if I have a song that let's your mind down easy Brightеns up the day just enough to take all your cares away And if it turns you on and I have made connection You can sing along, please, to show you've not gone home Give a boy a break, give a man a chance Let me sing a song to sing along or clap your hands to And when the music starts, open up your heart Don't you put yourself out, that's not what it's about
