Awesome Paperclip and Battery DC Motor - DIY at Montessori Science Fair

rd = refrigerator defrost fd = Freezer defrost They are separate modes for doing one or the other, not both at the same time. You can ONLY do one forced function at a time. The forced function with run continuously until canceled. To cancel, re-enter forced mode and you will see the currently selected forced function running, cycle through all the other forced functions until the screen is blank, wait a few seconds for the system to exit forced mode and the function will be canceled. Maybe my unit only lets one to be done at a time, it is a French refrigerator doors with a slide open lower freezer door.

3 weeks ago I took off the panel and melted all the ice. Last night, it was already completely iced up! Probably because I had damaged the styrofoam and weatherstrip last time. Today, after melting all the ice, I caulked around the fan enclosure, spray-foamed the 3 spots shown by @TWTH, fixed some broken styrofoam, applied fresh weatherstrip, and reassembled. For extra credit, I found and used some transparent "Frost King" tape from Home Depot all around the panel. Can't even notice it. Let's see if this holds!

@@resarfekim as another viewer noted, icing can occur if there is a leak, and the system is low on refrigerant. You will have to poke around to see if there is a DIY method of diagnosing that condition, without actually tapping into the system and putting pressure gauges in place. It's absolutely awesome how you have your kids involved and they actually enjoy it!! I just finished fixing the ice machine problem (hopefully permanently), but while following a link to that part and reading reviews one lady said it fixed her ice maker but didn't fix her issue with water under the meat and cheese drawer. I didn't know what she was talking about so I pulled that drawer out and holy moley there was a lake of water there! I had no clue that was happening! I'd been complaining to my husband for the last year or so that my cheeses were molding fairly quickly, which I've never had a problem with, ever, that just doesn't happen to this cheese lover, so I'm betting it's from that. So that's how I ended up here. First one I watched showed how to change the clip at the draining point and now you've showed the rest. I'm going to do all these things at once and have a permanent fix. Then I can go back to loving my Samsung fridge again!! Thanks so much for the very informative video!

I misteriously done all your steps before seen your video. Not exactly identical but similar. Position of the sensor slightly close but same idea. I added some 3/8” aluminum strips two around where you placed the thermistor to speed up the defrost up in that area. Wonderful video and the best of all is having the kids involve at this younger age. I’m a father of five. Even though I started to awakening ideas very early too I found myself doing this fridge with one at 24 and the other at 19 years old. Certainly have to confess is a lot easier when they are little. Now they are way too opinionated and have grown tire of tackling real live problems so they try to stall the proyect to see if you buy a knew one so they can go to their own life interests.

Umm, frost on the evaporator coil is usually indicative of low refrigerant. Perhaps we're dealing with different issues? My fridge, as with many others, has the ICE maker freezing up. I've seen all the videos alluding to warm air and condensation causing these problems, however, it's been my experience, given that my fridge worked flawlessly for about 5 years BEFORE my ICE Maker started to freeze over, that likely I lost some refrigerant... I know a lot about refrigeration and I'm thinking that my fridge lost some refrigerant over time. There may have been ambient air leakage into the compartment from the day the refrigerator left the factory and you didn't notice any freezing up issues because you had adequate refrigerant levels. However, post loss of refrigerant, these steps you took to seal everything off, etc. may improve the situation thereby masking the real issue, low refrigerant, until some future date whereby one cannot ignore it anymore and the freezing recurs... Just my opinion as an engineer.

Hey there, next time I have it apart, I will throw a self-piercing bullet valve on the line set and will throw a set of gauges on it. My Samsung french door fridge lasted nearly 6 years before this problem started (ice maker recently replaced by 1-800-SAMSUNG). After completely melting the fridge for 24 hours and putting it back together, the problem recurred in just a couple months. On mine, the block of ice forms below the fan instead of to the right of it, on the horizontal pipe and square plastic support. I guess I'll try moving the sensor to the left anyway, because then it'll at least be closer to the block of ice. The drain is also apparently plugged so I got sheets of ice below the large food tray threatening to lock it in place.

Just wanted to add another comment here. I have the RF28HMEDBWW/AA Rev. 07 Manufactured May of 2015. I had issues with the ice maker 6 months after purchase. Samsung came out and suggested a defrost which we did but it only worked temporarily. After this, we just dealt with the ice maker working intermittently and the ice bucket getting stuck every so often. Over the years the ice bucket cracked quite a bit and eventually it froze over all together. Fast forward a few years, the class action lawsuit happened. I found another YT video that talked about how to get the claim done. I did that and Samsung came out and replaced all the ice parts and sealed the housing in one afternoon! I got a new ice motor with a date code of 2021, so I knew it was new. They installed the clips and all that and we got a new ice bucket as well. That worked as well for about 6 months then we had an issue with the evaporator fan. I started hearing the fan making the ticking noise like the author of this video described. The fridge section wasn't very cold anymore as it once was. Then the fan got so loud it was audible everywhere in the house. Then it just stopped working altogether. I dealt with it for a year. Then I realized it was fixable again when I came across this video. I was about to buy another fridge. The freezer, thank goodness, still worked, but the icemaker and fridge were struggling. I found a replacement evaporator fan for my unit on Amazon. Did the first round of repairs suggested in another video. I defrosted the condenser coils with a steamer, dried everything out, and swapped out the fan. It worked for about 3 days and the fan noise was back. Took it back apart AGAIN, and this time there was about as much ice on the coils as before. This fan burned out too. Got Amazon to swap it out for me and then I tried the fixes suggested on this video. One alteration I made after reading other comments was, I didn't remove the factory insulation from the coolant lines into the fridge section. I just used clear silicon to fill it in all around. I moved the thermistor sensor over as suggested and insulated the fan housing with plenty of silicon and let it dry. Defrosted the entire fridge for the third time in a month lol. I also used silicon to seal up around the plug connections too. I didn't have the new drain clip from Samsung ordered when I did this, so I built my own. I used a long sheet of aluminum foil and made myself a T shaped piece folding it over a few times to build it up and then made the part that goes into the drain tube like a point, so it mimics the clip I didn't get to buy. I just didn't want to take it apart again for a fourth time so doing this was the best option for me. I completed the work on 2/15/24 and it is now 4/14/24. I have had NO ISSUES with the icemaker, fan noise, or ice buildup! This is an ABSOLUTE MIRACLE! I'm so thankful that this was the only issue I had with my unit, but boy it's been nice to have ice again and not have to make ice trays every day lol. This works. Be patient and follow the defrost instructions. One more suggestion that I followed was to adjust the temperature of both boxes. I have the freezer set to 4 degrees and the fridge set to 38 degrees Fahrenheit. I heard if you leave the freezer at 0 degrees that may be a contributing factor as well based on some other comments below on this video. Great suggestion. Water freezes at 32 degrees F anyway so 4 degrees is just as cold as zero. :) Last thing to note, I didn't add any insulation to the evaporator panel in my unit. It was thin from it being old, but I didn't see any issues with moisture from what I saw. I wanted to note that here. THANK YOU! You have saved me a TON of money. The fan was $25 dollars on Amazon and a little bit of my time to do the work and it is FINALLY WORKING! The fridge section is cold as it should be and there are no more issues.

Had ours a little over 10 years and it just now started to sound like a helicopter is inside it, so I'm going to have to do this DIY in the next few days. Coincidentally or otherwise, for the past year-ish we stopped using the ice dispenser and started just grabbing ice out of the freezer draw instead. Tried the dispenser the other day and it won't dispense ice now.

@@TWTH In case it's of interest to you - the day I posted this, I came home to a fridge/freezer running at room temperature. I dismantled it (watching your video all the way, which was very helpful!) and the coils at the back were covered in solid ice which was interfering with the fan. I put weather-stripping around the fan after defrosting it and also found that the ice machine was literally a solid block of ice. My fridge would not allow me to do any kind of manual defrost cycle via the control panel, which I suspect was due to the age, and I'm not even sure there was a thermistor on the coil assembly as it didn't look the same on the inside (though the back panel, screws etc were pretty much identical to your vid). It's been running fine for a nearly 3 weeks now so I'm crossing my fingers and toes that it makes it past the 1 month mark without any issues but I'm making sure to make that ice-maker work every day. I'm suspicious that the frozen up ice-draw maybe caused moisture to accumulate back on the coils via a hairline crack. tl;dr - the fridge has design flaws, still not sure what the root cause is, but your video was invaluable to me - thank you!

Nice, nice video! I have probably watched more videos and read more than anyone on this issue and have had mine apart also. Not to pick on you at all, but the one thing I can tell you is that two months of working does NOT mean it's fixed by any means at all. I have gone nine months then two years and then have the problem return with what Samsung says "officially" to do to fix these issues. Also for some reason Samsung has said in their literature NOT to move that internal yellow sensor to the other pipe to "try" to fix this issue. I have their paperwork on what they suggest to fix the problem if you are interested. They suggest replacing that sensor regardless of how it tests if it has been surrounded in ice. Feel free to respond back if you are interested in what I have tried and all.

If your want a sure fix for the design flaws of the Samsung French Door Refrigerators, watch this video by an appliance store technician who has resolved Samsungs mistakes: ua-cam.com/video/WjUbNx-Z-dE/v-deo.html and install Ben's Auxiliary Heater KIT so the defrost cycle actually works. All your problems permanently fixed in under an hour, and on the cheap! Ben also has the proper fix for the ice machine, which is another huge design flaw on Samsung French Door refrigerators! Samsung should be ashamed of themselves for selling these refrigerators that they know will fail shortly after the 1 year warranty runs out!

Yes, I occasionally evacuate the system and fill it with liquid helium, or tritium, if it needs a bit of extra kick.

if you run your refrigerator at a very cold setting for extended periods of time, it will frost up as did yours it is possible to set these electronically controlled systems to a setting at which they cannot perform trouble free for long periods of time too much run time for too long a time it cannot cope with moisture infiltration
