    "Krull" and "ET: The Extra Terrestrial" are both severely underrated Atari 2600 games. The bad reputation of ET is undeserved and likely comes from people refusing to read the instruction manual that comes with the game. Krull is also easier to figure out if you read the instructions.

    I got Atari 2600 from 1980 and played until about 1985. Probably had about 30-40 cartridges so I’m always amazed by how many of the games on these “greatest hits” lists I’ve never played or even seen. Jungle Hunt is one of my favourites. • @markrotondella4689
      @markrotondella4689 Місяць тому

      That's a good idea the assets actually has some graphics for it. It would be easy to do when a brick is destroyed I would assign a variable a random number and then have sub conditions in the brick death of creating pick ups. The bigger the range you make the random number the less often the pick ups would appear.

    Thank you for the step by step walkthrough on this, helped me a lot!! I ve got a question, when the ball hits 2 bricks simultaneously, score adds 10 instead of 20 (it shows on 30:35), why is this happening and is there a way to fix it? Thanks again for sharing this!

    • @markrotondella4689
      @markrotondella4689 2 місяці тому

      Oh yeah I hadn't noticed that. I made a simpler version to see if I could reproduce it and yep the same thing happened. I thought it might be the order of the events so if you added the score first but it still happens. I tried it with the collision not being a sub condition but it still happened. I tried hiding the brick then detecting if a brick was hidden adding to the score and deleting it. I tried adding a sprite variable to the brick changing that to one with a collision and then when that variable is changed to 1 deleting the brick and adding to the score. Every method produced the same result when the ball collides with two bricks you only get the score for one... Sorry let me know if you figure it out.

    • @giorgoschr79
      @giorgoschr79 2 місяці тому

      @@markrotondella4689 Thank you for taking the time to search for a solution! Maybe if after every hit there is a counter that counts the bricks and then according to the number it gives you get the score variable instead of getting the score from the collision?

    • @markrotondella4689
      @markrotondella4689 2 місяці тому

      @@giorgoschr79 that would work when the level starts you could set a variable to how many bricks are on the screen then after you delete bricks you check the current number of bricks to the starting amount. Annoying to make such a clumsy solution but it would work fine and wouldn't slow anything down.

    • @giorgoschr79
      @giorgoschr79 2 місяці тому

      @@markrotondella4689 Fixed it, made a variable for all the bricks on the screen. When ball collision's with brick, it deletes the brick as before and then I put 2 sub events, one for each of the two cases. a) if the number of bricks on screen are var -1 , add 10 to the score b) if it's var -2 add 20 to score. Just tested it, it works. Yes a little clumsy 😕. Thank you again for your time and answers!!

I haven't played much of the Atari Pole Position to be honest. The car and road are super impressive. Ms Pacman is an excellent conversion. Spider Fighter would make a lot of peoples list too.

    Any idea when Atari used the one piece dust cover? I have a couple that are both black label, pac-man and missile command

      The Atari Compedium is a great source of information on those fine grain details partially for the Atari published carts. According to that website they started using those dust covers on some of their carts in 1982. I don't think I ever got one of those back in the day. www.ataricompendium.com/archives/articles/vcs_label_variations/vcs_label_variations.html

    Is it weird that I played Adventure today (and not for a long time) and this video comes up as a suggestion?

    You have a great list, BUT.... a Star Raiders clone over the original Star Raiders? Thats too much, man. Star Raiders is the best game on the 2600. I will happily die on that hill. Adventure in the #1 spot is fine, though. Its an absolute classic. If you get a chance, please play Megamania. It deserves a spot on this list. Chopper Command is also worthy of your time.

      Haha fair enough it is pretty disrespectful. I probably should have cheated like I did with Pitfall and Pitfall 2 and put Star Raiders, Star Master and Phaser Patrol in one slot because I do love all three. I did give Megalomania a decent go but it probably did deserve more of my time. Chopper Command I played the hell out of and loved back in the day but it's not one I come back to now.

    There's a website that teaches you how to program for a 2600, including the very important task of counting processor instruction cycles. Most of the CPU's time was spent juggling the screen - something like 70%. Game logic had to fit into a scant fraction of time. Fun fact! An upgraded version of the TIA video chip in the 2600, called the CTIA and later GTIA, was used in Atari's home computers but because they were later and had a much more significant about of RAM, Atari added the ANTIC chip to convert a frame buffer into CTIA/GTIA instructions.

      I've toyed with the idea of making an Atari game although making an "in the style of" would be less time consuming. They were lucky the processor was actually pretty powerful for the time. I missed the Atari computer I immigrated to Commadore.

      Yes both the arcade game and the Atari version. It's amazing they did this a few years into the Atari's life - it looks like a "how did they manage to do that?!" modern homebrew.

      I suppose you just need a conditional statement so if it is stopped it starts if is playing it stopped.

    And it is possible to create games such as Dead Target or House of Dead with Gdevelop ?

      I haven't done anything with the 3D aspects of GDevelop I would think the original House of the Dead would be doable
