The Negator
The Negator - written by Deivis Garcia. I believe that this is the first or second song I ever wrote. I was 19 or 20 years old and the song was born basically as-is with no fine tuning other than the intro - a quote from Daniel Defoe - being tacked on in later years. I’m pleased to say that I’ve no proper explanation for the lyrics or theme other than to note that it had been influenced by a story within a story from Fyodor Doestoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. Enjoy.

Que Lío

Que Lío by Willie Colon & Hector Lavoe - performed by Deivito. There’s not much I can add to the lore for folks who are already fans of El Cantante de Los Cantantes Hector Lavoe, so I’ll just speak to those out there who don’t know his music as of yet and why he is timeless to me. Lavoe, the Singers’ Singer, had a voice know for its crisp sharp high range and mischievous levity, but his voice a...

Midnight

Midnight was written in the mid 90's by my friend and fellow songwriter Jose Arrunategui - formerly of the band Champagne Reign of Elizabeth, NJ. The original recording was an extremely lo-fi - yet purely magical - analog 4-track recording which captured the feel of a 1960s folk recording. Since the first I heard it Midnight I’d always felt that it had a universal center to it and Ihace always ...

If there’s any musician who I consider to be my true North in terms of sound, presence, style, it’s the Cuban guajiro musician Eliades Ochoa. That said, ages ago, my late and great friend John Finnegan introduced me to the musical stylings of Cuban-American country musician Raul Malo of The Mavericks. John, may he forever be goosing and scandalizing the angels, was a big fan of Malo and he did ...

Luna y Miel

Luna y Miel is a song of mine that is dear to me for its mutability. Although the lyrics are more or less set, I always enjoy shifting things about, as if it’s being played on a boat out at sea, being moved about by a larger currents than it’s own. This is also one of the songs in which I learned to embrace circularity for its own sake. In the past I’ve heard Latin American music occasionally d...
La Carcel de Cananea

If you don’t understand Spanish, the Mexican song La Carcel de Cananea has lots of vivid imagery - such as a man feeling like a played-out fighting rooster, getting arrested by gendarmes at 11pm with guns drawn in the “American style.” I won’t go too much further into the story of the song other than to say that the images in my mind for this song makes me think of the Wild West and was very ea...
Rogaciano el Huapangero

Rogaciano el Huapangero - Between takes of this song my father called from Puerto Rico and asked what I was doing. I told him I was playing the Mexican song Rogaciano. He said he knew the song but I was not sure if he’d heard me correctly, but then he sang a bit of “por los verdes cafetales…” He apparently used to enjoy singing the song ages ago out and about in rural Cabo Rojo. This haunting s...
Starboard Cork

By Deivito Here be a song of the whale’s road Yon cork-boat sails the Sea of Wine Good vintage, drunkfish, cheese, and brine Adventure, doldrums, sharks that goad Yon family’s wavy abode Cephalopods with monocles Raising glasses with tentacles Spumes so strong you’ll sail off the earth Drink, then, just a dram of this mirth But hold fast to yer barnacles

Half-Seen Bridge

Written by Deivis Garcia. . Here’s one I used to perform way way back. This one I named “Half-Seen Bridge” as inspired by a black & white photo I saw of a bridge in some lush mountains extending into a pure white fog. The effect was of something reliably solid disappearing into opaque nothingness. I don’t know what this means as pertaining to the lyrics, but I do know that the song’s name felt ...
